VERY BRIEF SUMMARY

The Hebrew root A-L-H means TO GO UP. Therefore
The Hebrew word MAALOTH can equally mean
- STEPS (the means by which you GO UP)
- FANTASIES (thoughts that POP UP on your mind)

Both these usages are illustrated in the LIST
below

Hence Ex20-23a could equally mean
- Dont go up to my altar WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE IT
- Dont go up BY STEPS to my altar

Both interpretations are equally plausible. In
fact Lv10-01:02 presents an episode where two
priests felt like offering sacrifices to God
and were severely punished. So indeed both
interpretations are plausible.

Rashi advises us that the true interpretation is
- Dont go up by STEPS to my altar

When one goes up by steps one exposes ones
crotch--this violates (Temple) modesty
standards. The emphasis on not embarassing
stone steps (By exposing your crotch)
encourages extra sensitivity to people.
