VERSE: Ex21-14a
All 4 verses are speaking about a situtation that merits a
death penalty. The verses however begin differently(For reasons
of space certain phrases have been paraphrased & only
certain contrasts shown)
--------------------------------------------------------------------
2-21-12 he who hits a man that dies
2-21-14 If a man "maliciously" kills his friend
3-24-17 If a man hits all of a mans soul
2-21-20 when a man hits by rod a slave who dies
*1 *2 *3 *4 *5
--------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTES
-----
*1 Death penalty only applies to an adult("man"), not a minor
*2 Only willful (not accidental) murderers receive a death penalty
Furthermore death penalties only apply to "malicious" murders
(not eg if a father was spanking his son).
*3 Death penalty only applies if murderer did whole ("all") killing
(not eg if you shot someone who had already been shot)
*4 Death penalty applies for murder of any live human but not
for abortions ("man" or "soul"). Verse Ex21-20 only applies
to slaves. (Rambam explains that death penalty only applies
for murder of a fellow Jew ("his friend") but not to murder
of non jews.
*5 Death penalty only applies if the blow was lethal (ie the
smote person actually died)
