VERSE: Ex23-02q
RULE: Rashi presents the difference between
>The SIMPLE meaning of a verse = meaning of sentence by itself
>The INTENDED meaning of a verse= what Author really meant
>The TALMUDIC/MIDRASHIC meaning of a verse=sentence in CONTEXT
Rashi, shows how the TALMUDIC meaning is the real intended
meaning of a Biblical verse. The following analogy illustrates
Rashis idea.
EXAMPLES: Consider the sentence "Bring the milk"
(1)SIMPLE MEANING: I want to DRINK some milk
(2)TALMUDIC MEANING#1: (If Im in supermarket) I want to BUY milk
(3)TALMUDIC MEANING#2:(If Im taking out garbage)Throw out sour milk
(4)TALMUDIC MEANING#3:(If Im eating meat) Brink milk to frigidaire
Thus the intended meaning of the sentence is NOT the simple
meaning of the sentence but rather that meaning that is
determined by context.
It follows that if context dictates otherwise it is permissable
to call a context-interpretation of a sentence as SIMPLE & INTENDED
