VERSE: Ex25-31i
This posting continues Ex25-31a which discusses the
construction of the Menorah.
--------------------------------------------------------------------
The fact that the Candellabrah was SCULPTORED from one piece but not
SOLDERED is **derived** from CONTEXT with **supportive proof** from
other nuances
--------------------------------------------------------------------
Ex25-31i "the candellabrahs shaft and bottom COME FROM IT"(1 piece)
Ex25-36 "all its parts shall be ONE HARD OBJECT of pure Gold
Ex25-31b "you shall make the candellabrah HARD" *1
Ex25-31c "You shall MAKE/LET IT BE MADE the Menorah"*2
NOTES
-----
*1 Note how the ORDER in which I presented the verses makes the
Rashi more palatable. After seeing the phrase ONE HARD OBJECT in
Ex25-36 it becomes easier to accept the idea that the word HARD
acquires a new meaning, SCULPTORED vs SOLDERED (A SCULPTORED
object is HARDER to break since a SOLDERED object is weak at the joints)
(My point is that Rashi does NOT derive that HARD=SCULPTORED from the
etymology but rather derives it from the explicit statement in the verses)
*2 Again we ALREADY know that the Candellabrah is SCULPTORED(we know
this from other verses).Rashi points out that the verb form in Ex25-31c
is a HYBRID form--it combines BOTH ACTIVE and PASSIVE MODES and hence
could refer to SCULPTORING. Again Rashi derives this AFTER finding out
from other verses that the Menorah was SCULPTORED--Rashi does not
derive this directly from the Hybrid construction.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
The shafts of the Candellabrah BRANCHED DIAGONALLY UPWARD from the main
shaft (like the letter "V").
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ex25-37b "The candellabrahs shafts come from it and LIGHT TOWARD THE CENTER SHAFT"
Ex25-32a "3 shafts from one side and 3 shafts from the other side"
RASHI: Ex25-37 teaches that the shafts branch DIAGONALLY(like a "V" not an "E")
From Ex25-32 we learn there were 3 on each side
(The phrase LIGHT TOWARD THE CENTER means that the other 6 shafts
were slightly tilted towards the center shaft)
