VERSE: Ex35-11a

RASHIS COVERED: Ex35-11a Ex35-11b Ex35-11c Ex35-14a Ex35-14b

DEDICATION:
==========
This issue is dedicated to TEACHERS & HOME SCHOOLERS.
Numerous techniques at a variety of levels are presented
for teaching.

I have already explained (see the reference below) that
the fundamental technique of teaching in the Passover Haggadah
is the technique of CROSS REFRENCING. Most of the Passover
Seder is spent on the verse, Dt26-05. The Passover Hagaddah's
method is to CROSS REFERENCE every phrase with some other
verse in the Bible that supports that phrase.

I have explained that CROSS REFERENCING is on the one hand
a simple technique that even a child can grasp while on
the other hand it is an advanced technique that even skilled
scholars find difficult.

The texts below give 3 sets of exercises and model solutions.
I hope people find this useful.

Those who want my 400 pages of Q&A worksheets on Chumash and
Rashi please email me at RJHendel@Juno.Com.

                --THE ELEMENTARY LEVEL--

EXERCISE: Ex25 and Ex26 speak about the order of God
to Moses to build a temple. By contrast Ex35
speaks about how Moses related Gods order
to build the temple to the Jewish People

Take the 3 items mentioned in Ex35-11 that Moses said
    God ordered to make.

Now find the 3 paragraphs in Ex25 and Ex26 where God
actually ordered Moses to make these items.

HINT: Both GOD and MOSES use the same words

EXERCISE: Ex25 and Ex26 speak about the order of God

speaks about how Moses related Gods order
to build the temple to the Jewish People

Take the 2 items mentioned in Ex35-14 that Moses said
God ordered to make in the Candellabrah.

Now find the items in Ex25-31:40 where God
actually ordered Moses to make these items.

HINT: Notice how the same words are not used!

NOTES
=====
*1 The Hebrew word used, literally means >FLAMES< but can
also be used to denote >WICKS<. The logic is as follows:
Since Ex25-37 which says >and make 7 FLAMES< should better
be translated >and make 7 WICKES<, consequently we
should SIMILARLY TRANSLATE Ex35-14b as follows:
   >and make the WICKS of the Candellabrah<.

                --THE ADVANCED LEVEL--

EXERCISE: Ex25 and Ex26 speak about the order of God
to Moses to build a temple. By contrast Ex35
speaks about how Moses related Gods order
to build the temple to the Jewish People

There are 3 parts to the temple and each
               one had a DOOR(actually a curtain door)

Find the 3 verses in Ex35 where Moses ordered the
people to make 3 door coverings.

Now find Gods order to make 3 door coverings in
    Ex26 and Ex27.

Finally align the 3 verses about doors in Ex35 with
the 3 verses about doors in Ex26 and Ex27.

HINT: Try pairing up verses that use the same words

NOTES
=====
*2 The Hebrew word >SoCh< can be used to denote ANY type of
   >PROTECTION< whether protecting from >ABOVE< or from the
   >SIDE<. Here are some sample verses brought by Rashi where
   >SoCh< means to simply PROTECT (but not to COVER)

   --- Jb01-06 You have PROTECTED (>Thorned<) him
   --- HS02-08 I will THORN-FEnCE (>SoCh<) your path

                --THE PROFOUND LEVEL--

EXERCISE: Well I never said you could imitate Rashi
              on ALL verses.

Here is a real toughy which I dont expect
              anyone to get.

              Ex35-19 mentions the >SeRaD CLOTHES<.
What were they? What do they refer to?

Again there are no hints---I dont expect
you to get this one. This is simply the
difference between a Rishon and you & me.
              Read Rashis' analysis below.

NOTES
=====
*3 What does the Biblical phrase >BIGDAY SERAD< refer to?
There are a variety of techniques that a person studying
   Bible can use.

They can use the UNIFIED MEANING of the root:
The Hebrew root >Sin-Resh-Dalet< literally means >LEFTOVER<
or >SURVIVOR<. Thus the Biblical phrase >SRD Clothes< would
mean the >CLOTHES for LEFTOVERS<. However, it is not clear
   what this refers to!

A 2nd technique is to review the VERSES where the phrase,
   >SRD CLOTHS< occurs. There are only 3 such verses

   ------------------------------------------------------------
Ex31-10 The SeRaD Clothes Priestly clothes
Ex39-41 The SeRaD Clothes to SERVE holiness Priestly clothes
Ex39-01 The SeRaD Clothes to SERVE holiness Priestly clothes
                             *a
   ------------------------------------------------------------

Collectively the 3 verses together seem to say that there
   are 2 types of >CLOTHES<:
   --Priestly Clothes
--SeRaD Clothes used to >SERVE THE HOLINESS<

Again there is no clear reference!

However the only temple items discussed in the Bible not
yet mentioned in Ex35 were the >COVERING CLOTHS< listed
in Nu04-04:15--their goal was not to be holy clothes
but rather to cover the holy items when moving took place.
So, so to speak, these clothes >SERVED HOLINESS<.

Perhaps also, these clothes were used when disassembling
the temple so that they were clothes for the SURVIVING
   UTENSILS!!!!?!?

Is this clear and unambiguous? No!

Therefore, this is an example of an advanced Rashi---something
that looks reasonable but you cant fully prove.
