----------------
God told Moses to bring the plague of blood on
------------------------------------------------------
--On Egyptian water bodies GENERAL STATEMENT
------on rivers, canals, ponds EXAMPLES
--On All Water bodies GENERAL
------------------------------------------------------
THE RASHI
---------
Rabbi Ishmael requires sentences using a
GENERAL-EXAMPLE-GENERAL style to be GENERALIZED
So the verse doesnt mean to smite ONLY the rivers
canals and ponds; rather it means to smite ANY water body
like them--this includes resevoirs and bottled water *6

COMMENTS |
*1 We have inserted various CAPPED elliptical words. E.g.
---------------------------------------------
on Egyptian waters WHETHER rivers OR canals..EVEN utensils
---------------------------------------------
These insertions help suggest that the verse generalizes
to ALL water bodies
*2 The CAPPED Biblical word, ALL---
--------------------------------
smite ALL egyptian waters
--------------------------------
provides an alternative and supportive defense for
GENERALIZATION: ALL Egyptian waters (not just rivers)
turned to blood. See
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/words.htm
http://www.RashiYomi.com/all-18.htm
*3 Rashi interprets WOOD and STONE to mean WOOD and STONE
UTENSILS. There are many utensils that are similarly
named by their SUBSTANCE-- what they are made of:
e.g. (eye) glasses, (drinking) glasses, linoleum(floors)
See http://www.RashiYomi.Com/naming-8.htm
*4 Rashi in 4 places translates AGAM or SOOF as pond
----------------------------------------------------------------
VERSE WORD MEANS RASHIS COMMENTS ON POND(Ex13-18b)
-------- ------ ------ ----------------------------------------
Ex07-19c AGaM*2 Pond*1 Place where REEDS Grow(Reeds Suck water)
Ex02-03d SooF*3 Pond*1 Place where REEDS Grow(Reeds Suck water
Gn41-02b AChu*4 Pond*1 Place where REEDS Grow(reed Thicket(ACH))
Ex13-18b Soof Pond*1 Place where REEDS Grow(Reeds Suck water)
----------------------------------------------------------------
Note that this etymology can be explained in 3 stages
-- Both Soof and GooMah mean TO ADD(SOF)/ALSO(GAM)
-- Both Soof and GooMaH mens REEDS(Plant shoots ADDING water)
-- Hence both SooF and GooMaH mean POND/MARSH
*5 The Rashis on Ex07-19b Ex07-19c and Ex07-19d explain that
NAHAR, YEOR and AGAM mean RIVER, CANAL and MARSH respectively
The etymology of AGAM is explained in footnote #4. The
etymology of YEOR, CANAL, can be traced back to 2C32-28
which shows that the root ALEPH-VUV-RESH means VEGETABLES
Hence a CANAL (Yud-ALEPH-RESH) would refer to a CANAL
that is used to WATER GARDENS where vegetables grow.
*6 In the 3rd unit of this series we use the QUINE FORMAL
LOGIC rules to show that the proper generalization is
to ANY BODY OF WATER, whether MAN-MADE(like a canal)
or NATURAL(Like a river), whether from a SOURCE(like
a river), or CLOSED( like a pond). Hence it is a
legitimate act of logic to generalize this verse to ANY
water collection including RESEVOIRS and BOTTLED WATER
