There are two methods which we now define and exemplify. METHOD 1a-DEFICIENCY in spelling = DEFICIENCY in person ------------------------------------------------------- The word >SLEEP can be spelled >SLE P (deficiently spelled without the extra e) >SLEEP (fully spelled with all e's) In METHOD 1a if a verse said >He tried to get some SLE P the proper midrashic response would be >He tried to get a good night SLE P but >did not succeed. The argument would be >Since the word SLE P is spelled deficiently >we learn that the sleep itself was deficient. In other words in METHOD 1 we transfer the >deficiency in the SPELLING (SLE P) to a >deficiency in the OBJECT or ACTIVITY spoken about >(Can't sleep) METHOD 1b: DEFICIENCY in spelling = Deficiency in Number ----------------------------------------------------------- In method 1b we interpret >Deficiency in spelling = Not ALL of them > = deficiency in plurality > = deficiency in number So the sentence >He would SLEEP there during the WEK with a deficiently spelled word, WEEK would mean >He would sleep there MOST days during the week >but not on all days (hence the word WEEK is >spelled deficiently) METHOD 2a --------- The word >KITE can be spelled >KIT (Deficiently--it is missing (deficient) 1 letter e) or >KITE (Fully--with the E) In METHOD 2 we interpret the deficiently spelled word as a pun. We actually give the sentence a double meaning. Thus if a sentence said >The father bought his son a KIT to fly in the park Then since KITE is spelled KIT, we would midrashically interpret this to mean >The father bought his son a KITE >The father also bought his son a KITten! Rashis position is that this interpretation of FULL vs DEFICIENT is a grammatical rule and is part of the intended meaning of the sentence. METHOD 2b: The PUN is interwoven with the sentence ---------------------------------------------------- Consider the sentence just looked at >The father bought his son a KIT to fly in park In method 2a we intepret this as a pun having nothing to do with the original sentence >he bought his son a kite >he bought his son a KITTEN But in method 2b we interpret this as pun whose meaning is interwover with the sentence >he bought his son a kite with a picture of >a kitten on it There are the 4 methods----we now complete our review of these Rashis---a grand summary is below. Hope you enjoyed this module---many scholars do not consider FULL and DEFICIENT to be the "simple meaning" With Rashis help and these LISTS we can easily see the pattern and enjoy these Verses the same way our sages did. #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2000 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# EXAMPLE 26: Dt02-33a -------------------- In discussing the capture by Israel of an enemy king the Bible says >Dt02-33a >and we captured him ...and his S NS >RASHI: >The Hebrew word >S NS >is spelled deficiently. As such it looks >like the Hebrew word >his SON (Singular) > >This suggests a PUN > >Besides capturing the royal family they >also captured >**his** son, his favorite SON >that is, the successor to the throne. >In other words, the captured the family >and no one escaped. --------------------------------------------------------- |QUESTION 20: | |----------- | |We just saw that Rashi identified the Hebrew word | | >my son | |with the concept | | >my (favorite) son, my successor | |Can you find Biblical verses where the word | | >son | |is used in the sense of | | >my disciple, follower, student | |Some partial answers are given below in the answer | |section. | --------------------------------------------------------- --------------GRAND SUMMARY *1---------------- Ex # VERSE WORD METHOD INTERPRETATION == = ======== ====== ========= =========================== 13 7 Gn23-16a EPHRON Deficient Hollow deficient person *2 1 1 Gn25-24b TOMIM Deficient Bad person(Esauv) 2 1 Gn38-27b TEOMIM Full Good Person(Tribe of Judah) 12 6 Lv26-42a YAKOOV Full Exile Includes Redemption*3 14 7 Dt01-13a VaSiMyM Deficient Judges responsible on errors 19 9 Nu15-02b CHATAS Deficient Only place:1st OLAH,2nd CTH 16 8 Dt06-09a MZUZOTH Plurality Only one mezuzah is needed 18 8 Dt09-10a LCHOTH Plurality All 10 commandments on each 17 8 Ex31-05e LCOTH Plurality All 10 commandments on each 15 8 Lv23-40c CPOTH Plurality Only 1 Lulav is needed 20 9 Gn01-21a TANINIM Plurality Only male was created 9 5 Gn09-12a DOROTH Plurality Not all generations need it 10 5 Gn01-28a KIVSHUA Plurality Only men need conquer 5 3 Gn24-39a OLY Pun To me(Wanted for his daughter 21 10 Ex03-15a LOLAM Pun Conceal my name 22 10 Ex23-02c RV Pun Don't disagree with Rabbi 23 10 Gn08-21a MnuRaV Pun Mischief From infancy 3 2 Gn16-05b BNyIch Pun Mad at Hagar and Abraham 25 11 Nu07-19a HIKRV Pun God commanded order 4 2 Gn01-14b MOROTH Pun Curses created on Wednesday 26 12 Dt02-33a BNV Pun'*4 Cut off his "sons & heirs" 6 3 Gn06-02b TOVOTH Pun' Fixed up & good looking 24 11 Nu22-05f MMLI Pun' camped "opposite & opposing" 7 4 Gn18-01c YOSHAV Pun' Sit up and down(in respect) 12 6 Gn19-01c YOSHAV Pun' Sat in nation;Sit on "bench" 8 4 Gn23-10a YSHV Pun' Sat in nation;Sat on "bench" NOTES ----- *1 Column 1 = EX = Examples (Numbered in issues) Column 2 = # = Which issue (See the Rashi Yomi database for past issues) Column 3 = VERSE = Verse where Rashi occurs Column 4 = WORD = which word is deficint COlumn 5 = Method= which of 4 methods used COlumn 6 = Interpretation resulting from method *2 Gn23 lists EPHRONS name 8 times: This is the only time it is spelled deficiently. Ephron was deficient because he promised to give the field for nothing but in the end gave it for "full currency" *3 Jacob = Exile (Jacob symbolizes exile) The FULLY spelled Jacob=FULL exile=including redemption See Gn49-01 for an explicit statement of this Rashi expresses this idea using a pun (Jacob "loaned" the "vav" from Elijah). However what we have presented here is the simple meaning of the text. *4 By PUN' with a prime we mean that the puns meaning is woven with the regular meaning (So eg in the other examples the PUN sentence and ACTUAL sentence are separate as in >Don't settle a DISPUTE by giving in >Don't disagree with a Rabbi However in these examples the PUN sentence and original sentence become one as in >they are sitting opposite me >they are OPPOSING me In other words it really means >They are sitting opposite me in military formation ------------------------------------------------------------ ANSWERS: -------- #20: There are many examples where >son = disciple as in Ps2-7, Nu3-1(Moses 'descendants' are mentioned but only Aarons children (Moses 'students') are given, Dt14-01, 1King20-35 ("Children" of prophets=Disciples), 2King2:12 #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 1999 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
