GOALS:
------
In this short module we illustrate a NEW RASHI RULE--the
rule of the FILL IN. This rule deals with a paragraph
of Chumash where Rashis' commentary's job is simply
to clarify short or ambiguous phrases.

We will illustrate this rule by going thru
Lv25-25 thru Lv25-28

TODAYS UNIT
-----------
In todays unit we show two Rashis which clarify
what the Hebrew word VAV refers to. VAV can mean
AND, OR, IF, THEN.

REFERENCE:
----------
This module comes from the following references in the
Rashi-is-Simple series.

EXAMPLE 3: Lv25-25c
===================

THE BACKGROUND
--------------
This Bibilical paragraph deals with the case where a person
becomes so poor that he sells his share of the land in
Israel. The Bible then outlines 3 possibilities
--a relative helps him out
--he makes some unexpected money & wants his field back
--none of the above

Some further background. The Hebrew word VAV, can mean
AND, OR, IF, THEN

In Lv25-25 we review the SITUATION where a
relative helps out.

THE VERSE
---------
AND his relative-redeemer comes
AND redeems his brothers field

THE RASHI
---------
The first AND means IF
The second AND means THEN.

Thus the verse should be read
------------------------------------
IF his relative-redeemer comes
THEN he may redeem his brothers field
------------------------------------

COMMENT
-------
Thus Rashi uses the rule of FILL-IN. He clarifies
which of the meanings of AND applies here. In one
case AND means IF and in the other it means THEN.
Rashi infers the meanings of AND from the
OVERALL STRUCTURE of the paragraph.

EXAMPLE 4: Lv25-26a
===================

BACKGROUND
----------
We now deal with situation 2. Suppose
no relative comes to redeem the field but
the original owner MAKES it and has enough
money to buy his field back

THE VERSE
---------
IF a person have no RELATIVE REDEEMER

THE RASHI
---------
IF a person have no RELATIVE REDEEMER
OR
IF a person has a relative but he doesnt have enough money
to redeem.

COMMENTS
--------
3 points will clarify this Rashi

1st: The OVERALL STRUCTURE of the paragraph clearly
   shows 3 SITUATIONS:
   --a relative redeems the field
--the original owner redeems the field
   --noone redeems the field

   2nd: The verse actually says
   ------------------------------------------
and if the original owner have no redeemer
   ------------------------------------------

3rd: Rashi deviates from the literal meaning of the text
and interprets the above phrase as follows
   --------------------------------------------------------
and if the original owner have no redeemer OR
he has a redeemer-relative but that relative has no money
   --------------------------------------------------------

Thus Rashi reinterprets the verse to be consistent with
   the OVERALL STRUCTURE.

Notice here how Rashi uses FILL-IN. He fills in the
LOGIC of the IF statement based on the paragraph.
