The following 9 unit series is devoted to the Rashis on the Hebrew
word
        >GAM (Also)
A person completing this series will have proficiency in the 3
methods by which the word
        >ALSO
is understood. These 3 methods are introduced in this introduction
and the next issue followed by all Rashis on GAM.

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 1999 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
The word
        >ALSO
in both English and Hebrew denotes
        >something extra.
The word ALSO occurs about 150 times in TNACH. In 26 (15%) cases
Rashi comments and presents what is extra.

EXAMPLE 1 Gn20-05a
---------
For example: Avimelech protests to God when He wishes to punish
Avimelech for wanting Sarah, Abraham's wife, whom Avimelech
thought was Abraham's sister. Avimelech protests
        >'But she ALSO said she was his sister'

We ask who else (besides Sarah) could have ALSO said
that Sarah was Abraham's sister? Rashi says
        >Sarahs servants ALSO said that Sarah was
        >Abraham's sister(Gn20-5a)
The reader is invited to try and think of alternative approaches
and see if they are better

EXAMPLE 2 Gn24-44a
---------
Similarly when Rivkah
        >ALSO gave ELIEZER water
Rashi says she
        >also offered his servants (Gn24-44a)

We now summarize by indicating the 3 methods or themes by
which
        >ALSO indicates SOMETHING EXTRA
We present the 1st method today; the other 2 will be presented
tomorrow.

THEME 1: ALSO means SOMEONE ELSE
================================
--Examples like
        >ELIEZER ALSO got water
        >(SOMEONE ELSE got water--
        >Possibly his servants(Gn24-44a))
In these examples there is an extra RECIPIENT of an action.
