The following 9 unit series is devoted to the Rashis on the Hebrew
word
        >GAM (Also)
A person completing this series will have proficiency in the 3
methods that the word
        >ALSO
is understood. In previous modules we have explained the 3
meanings of ALSO

THEME/METHOD 1: ALSO can mean AN EXTRA RECIPIENT
=================================================
EXAMPLE: (Gn20-5a) Sarah ALSO said she was Abrahams sister
RASHI: Sarah, and her maids ALSO, said Abraham was a brother

THEME 2: ALSO can means a DERIVED or RELATED PRODUCT
====================================================
EXAMPLE:
-------
Dt23-19c Bringing a prostitutes payment to God is ALSO disgusting
RASHI: eg If she was payed with wheat then
                >bringing WHEAT to the temple is disgusting
                >bringing FLOUR from that wheat is ALSO disgusting

THEME 3: ALSO refers to a similar ANALOGOUS RELATIONSHIP
========================================================
EXAMPLE:
--------
Ex07-23 says that at the plague of blood, that

        >Pharoh hardened his heart(didn't listen)
        >and didn't pay attention ALSO TO THIS

But at the 'stick turning into a snake' Ex07-13 only says

        >Pharoh hardened his heart(didn't listen)

Hence we have the
        >RASHI:(Ex07-23a)
        >Pharoh didn't pay attention to the plague of BLOOD
        >Pharoh ALSO didn't pay attention to the 'stick to snake'

In this issue we look at other examples of method 2
        >ALSO means A DERIVED or RELATED OBJECT

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 1999 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
EXAMPLE 12:
-----------
>Dt22-22b when a couple has an adulterous affair
        > then they ALSO will be put to death
>RASHI:
        >That is, the adulterous couple is sentenced to death
        >and when killing the women we ALSO kill the foetus inside
        >her, if there is one (In other words we do not delay
        >execution till after birth)
        >
This Rashi illustrates how ALSO can refer to a
        >DERIVED or RELATED OBJECT
like the FOETUS of the adulter

(Rashi initially brings an opinion that the adulterer is executed
and ALSO any other adulterer that had an affair with her
after she had a convicted status...

But realistically it is more probably that an adulteror
got pregnant then that she had multiple affairs in prison)

EXAMPLE 13:
-----------
>Gn19-21a (Lot asked, (at the destruction of Sedom) that
     > he be allowed to go to a nearby city; The
     > Angels answered..)
     >
     > We have ALSO respected your wish in this matter
>RASHI:
     >We have respected your wish to be allowed to go to this city
     >AND WE ALSO have spared destroying this city on your account.

This Rashi illustrates our principle that
        >ALSO can refer to a RELATED or DERIVED OBJECT.
Thus SPARING THE CITY is clearly RELATED to letting Lot
go there.

EXAMPLE 14:
----------
> Gn42-22b (When Joseph took Shimon into Prison when his
      > brothers came before him, Reuben reprimanded
      > the brothers; Reuven said that the imprisonment of
      >         Shimon was a punishment for having killed Joseph;
      > Reuben further said
      >
      > '& ALSO his blood is being avenged
>RASHI:
      >Joseph's blood is being avenged (and hence we are punished)
      >and ALSO Joseph's father's blood is being avenged since
      >Jacob sat in constant mourning over Joseph and had become
      >like a dead person.

This Rashi illustrates our principle that
        >ALSO can refer to a DERIVED or RELATED OBJECT
since Jacob's blood and mourning is clearly RELATED to
Joseph's blood.
