The following 9 unit series is devoted to the Rashis on the Hebrew
word
        >GAM (Also)
A person completing this series will have proficiency in the 3
methods that the word
        >ALSO
is understood. In previous modules we have explained the 3
meanings of ALSO

THEME/METHOD 1: ALSO can mean AN EXTRA RECIPIENT
=================================================
EXAMPLE: (Gn20-5a) Sarah ALSO said she was Abrahams sister
RASHI: Sarah, and her maids ALSO, said Abraham was a brother

THEME 2: ALSO can means a DERIVED or RELATED PRODUCT
====================================================
EXAMPLE:
-------
Dt23-19c Bringing a prostitutes payment to God is ALSO disgusting
RASHI: eg If she was payed with wheat then
                >bringing WHEAT to the temple is disgusting
                >bringing FLOUR from that wheat is ALSO disgusting

THEME 3: ALSO refers to a similar ANALOGOUS RELATIONSHIP
========================================================
EXAMPLE:
--------
Ex07-23 says that at the plague of blood, that

        >Pharoh hardened his heart(didn't listen)
        >and didn't pay attention ALSO TO THIS

But at the 'stick turning into a snake' Ex07-13 only says

        >Pharoh hardened his heart(didn't listen)

Hence we have the
        >RASHI:(Ex07-23a)
        >Pharoh didn't pay attention to the plague of BLOOD
        >Pharoh ALSO didn't pay attention to the 'stick to snake'

In the last 3 issues we look at other examples of method 3
        >ALSO refers to ATTRIBUTES of a RELATIONSHIP/ACTIVITY

#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 1999 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
A simple example unifying all 3 of these Rashis is eg if
I say concerning two bank robbers, Abe and Bob that
        a) Abe killed the guard
        b) and Bob ALSO took the money
then the word ALSO transfers the ATTRIBUTES of the ACTIVITIES to
BOTH PARTIES. So that we interpret a) and b) as
        a) Abe killed a guard
        b) Abe took the money
And also
        a) Bob killed a guard
        b) Bob took the money
These 3 Rashis illustrate this principle.

EXAMPLE 18 Nu11-04b
----------
>Nu11-04b And the non-jews that left Egypt started clamering
        > for more meat and (from this) the Jews returned to
        > their old way and ALSO started crying
        >
>RASHI
        > The verse states that
        > >a) The non jews CLAMMERED for more meat
        > >b) The Jews CRIED (in complaint)
        >
        > The word ALSO shows that BOTH attributes were true
        > for both parties.
        >
        > >a) The non jews CLAMMERED and CRIED
        > >b) The Jews CLAMMERED and CRIED

EXAMPLE 19 Nu22-19
----------
>Nu22-19 (When Balak tried to get Bilam to curse the Jews
       > he sent a first party (whom God rejected) and
       > then sent a second party to whom Bilam said)
       >
       > And now you ALSO stay over tonight...
       >
>RASHI:
       > The first party BOTH
       > > a) stayed over during the night
       > > b) & was rejected by God
       > The text only says about the 2nd party
       > > a) stay over tonight
       > But the word ALSO shows that both Bilam and they
       > knew that
       > > b) they would ALSO be rejected by God

EXAMPLE 20 Gn30-30b
----------
>Gn30-30b (When Jacob had given birth to all his children
       > he asked Laban permission to leave and said)
       >
       > Just as you had a small amount before hand (when
       > your sons were working the field) and now that I
       > am working you have alot so ALSO do I want to
       > help my sons who are supporting my house and help
       > them make alot
       >
>RASHI
       > Before Jacob worked for Laban
       > >a) Labans sons helped him
       > After Jacob
       > >b) Laban was rich
       > The text only says that
       > >a) Jacob wanted to help earn for his sons
       > However the word ALSO shows that
       > >b) Jacob also wanted to become rich
