Those who seriously wish to study Rashi should study this. RULE ==== The Hebrew root >Aleph-Samech-Pay< has a fundamental meaning of >BRINGING IN<.From this fundamental meaning we get 5 meanings TODAYS UNIT =========== SHORT RASHIS vs LONG-LIST RASHIS -------------------------------- Although there are 14 Rashis (0.2%) on the Hebrew root >Aleph-Samech-Pay< nevertheless ONLY 3 of these 14 carefully lay down the principle (The other Rashis simply say that >Aleph-Samech-Pay means >BRING IN<). JUSTIFICATION USING LISTS ------------------------- So in Todays unit we review these 3 special Rashis. Notice how RASHI HIMSELF Brings the list of verses justifying the translation >Aleph-Samech-Pay< means >BRING IN<. ADDRESSING SCHOLARS & CHILDREN ------------------------------ We will see that Rashi brought the LIST for scholarly people; Rashi brought the CLINCHY EXAMPLE for children. REFERENCE: ========= This module comes from the following digest in the Rashi-is-Simple series http://www.RashiYomi.Com/h8n23.htm (Available Sunday) http://www.RashiYomi.Com/gn49-29a.htm (Available Sunday) #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#* We first bring the 3 verses and Rashis where Rashi defends that >Aleph-Pay-Samech< means >BRING IN<. Below the examples we present the LIST of verses brought by Rashi himself to justify this translation. EXAMPLE 1: Gn49-33a ========= The verse says >Jacob >BROUGHT HIS LEGS INTO< the bed & died So >Aleph-Pay-Samech< means to >BRING IN< EXAMPLE 2: Nu11-30c ========== BACKGROUND ---------- The Jews had been rebelling against God because of what they perceived as lack of food and water. God threatens to punish them. But first Moses and the elders have to go home(So they shouldnt see the punishment) VERSE ----- The verse says >And Moses & the elders BROUGHT THEMSELVES HOME< (literally: Brought themselves into the Camp---they had been at the Temple Tent receiving instructions from God Nu11-16 *1) Again we see that >Aleph-Pay-Samech< means to >BRING IN< EXAMPLE 5: Gn20-33a ========= BACKGROUND ---------- The Bible is discussing the case of Rachel who could not have children and felt embarassed. When she finally had a child the verse says VERSE ----- >God has BROUGHT ME INSIDE (ie HOME, to care for children) & saved me from disgrace< We now bring the LIST of verses showing that the Hebrew root >Aleph-Pay-Samech< measn to >BRING IN<. Interestingly most people interpret this root as >GATHER< But as the RADACK says in the name of his father in the book of Biblical roots, >Alpeh-Pay-Samech< means to >BRING IN< while >Kuf-Bet-Tzade< means to >GATHER<. {LIST} These are the actual verses Rashi brings to prove that the Hebrew root >Aleph-Samech-Pay< means >TO BRING IN<.*2 The clinchiest verse is Ps39-07 >He GATHERS (wealth) but doesnt know who will BRING THE WEALTH into his house (Since he might die prematurely)<*3 =============================================================== VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH >Aleph-Samech-Pay< meaning >BRING< ========= ===================================================== Ps39-7 He gathers wealth but doesnt know who will BRING it*2 Isa4-1 BRING us(women) into your house;save us from disgrace Ex9-19 If you dont BRING animals inside they will die in hail Joel4-15 The sun is dark; the stars BRING IN their glimmer Isa60-20 Your sun wont go away;your moon will not be BROUGHT IN Ju19-15 They lived in the street;no one BROUGHT THEM IN Dt22-02 If you find a lost article...BRING IT IN to your house Lv23-39 On Tabernacles when you BRING YOUR HARVEST IN {END OF LIST} COMMENT ======= Notice how Rashi brings examples for both the scholar (a LIST) and for children (the CLINCHY EXAMPLE)*4 ----------------------------NOTES------------------------------- *1 EXAMPLE 3,4: Nu11-30a ========= There are 3 Rashis on this verse, Nu11-30a EXAMPLE 3: Nu11-30a ========= BACKGROUND ---------- Moses and the elders had been at the Temple Tent (Nu11-16). So Nu11-30a -------- Rashi points out that that they came >FROM< the temple tent. EXAMPLE 4: Nu11-30b ========= Rashi points out that they went >TO< their houses Nu11-30c ======== Rashi explains that the fundamental meaning of >Aleph-Pay-Samech< is to >BRING IN< *2 These verses and the clinchy Ps39-7 all are brought by Rashi (Gn30-23a, Gn49-29a, Nu11-30c) *3 All the commentators takes this verse the same way. >Man walks in darkness...even though he gathers wealth he doesnt know who will bring his wealth home since he might die< *4 We have seen the LIST of verses that >Aleph-Pay-Samech< means to >BRING IN<. This list is brought above. But Rashi also uses a second approach--he brings >ONE CLINCHY VERSE<, Ps39-7 where it is clear that >aleph-pay-samech< means to >BRING IN< Ps39-7 states >Man gathers wealth but he doesnt know who will BRING HOME his wealth since man may die< #*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*# (C) Dr Hendel, 2001 *#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*#*
