======== The Hebrew root K-D-Sh means FORMAL ===================
BACKGROUND
----------
The Hebrew root K-D-Sh is enigmatic. It is usually translated
as HOLY. But this translation, while true, is inadequate.
THE TEXT
--------
There are about 2 dozen Rashis on this ROOT. The Biblical
texts vary greatly: E.g.In the following the CAPPED words
correspond to the translation of K-D-Sh
- SANCTIFY the Sabbath;
- be a HOLY nation
- there will be no PROSTITUTES among you
- dont sow mixed seeds lest the land be PROHIBITED
What is the common denominator to the CAPPED words.
THE RASHI
---------
I think the best way to explain Rashi is to translate
-------------------------------------------------------
HOLY as meaning any PREPARED,FORMAL AFFAIR
-------------------------------------------------------
Hence HOLYNESS can mean being FORMAL or being PREPARED
It can also refer to a BANQUET type atmosphere(an INAUGURATION)
A secondary (important) derived meaning is TO BE SEPARATED
THE LIST
--------
In this posting we present the Rashis illustrating the idea
of an AFFAIR or BANQUET. In a subsequent posting in the
next issue (Dt22-09b) we present the idea of BEING PREPARED
Here is the LIST

NOTES
=====
*1 There are several similar Rashis. Rashi suggests that the
Jewish Holy days are BANQUETED with
-- Special Speeches/Prayers
-- Appropriate Appareil (Black tie!)
-- Food and Drink
In other words K-D-Sh, to sanctify, means to have
a FORMAL AFFAIR
Rashi also makes a grammatical point that the present tense
of a verb root should be translated as a noun not a verb.
Here is a LIST of present tenses of roots & their translations
--------------------------------------------------------------
WORD IN PRESENT TENSE NOUN TRANSLATION ROOT OF VERB
--------------------- ---------------- ------------------
MIKRAH Banquet an INVITED meal
MISHMAR Prison Under GUARD
MIKDASH The Temple HOLY building
MIZBAYACH Altar Place of SLAUGHTER
MELECH King WALKS/LEADS nation
--------------------------------------------------------------
The last entry on the list is due to Rav Hirsch
*2 The context in Nu11 is that the Jews had asked for DESCENT
food other than the Manna. Moses therefore tells them to
PREPARE (KDASH) FOR A BANQUET. Moses says this cynically:
THe Banquet will lead to overeating and sickness(Which
is typical of some banquets)
-------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------------
*10 Before explaining why prostitutes are called KDSH (HOLY)
we review several inferior translations
- PROSTITUTES WERE HOLY IDOL PRIESTETSS(&henced called HOLY)
-------------------------------------------------------------
Obviously though, not all prostitutes are connected with
idolatry. Indeed, the problem with this approach is that
it perceives HOLY as the primary meaning of the root KDSH
In reality the primary meaning of KDSH is FORMAL/INAUGURAL
- PROSTITUTES ARE WOMEN WHO prepare TO HAVE SEX
-------------------------------------------------------------
Really!?!? Hopefully any happily married woman/man prepares
for sharing love.
The explanation we are suggesting is that
- KADESH refers to any PREPARED, FORMAL AFFAIR
-------------------------------------------------------------
So it could refer to a Banquet -- A Formal affair of eating
characterized by invitations, special dress, and banquets.
OR it could refer to a sexual affair -- the word affair
simply means something with several courses that is not
on the fly; It can therefore refer to food or sex.
