RASHIS COVERED: Gn08-22b Gn08-22c Gn08-22e
============================== Gn08-22b ===========================
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the alignment
of ALMOST similar verses. The minor variations between these
almost similar verses suggests nuances and differences or
even meaning. We call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT
When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost
identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING.
EXAMPLE: The 6 Seasons
-------------------------------------
In Gn08-22 God promises to maintain the
6 seasons
----------------------------------------------------
The days of the earth will continue
- Planting season (Sep Oct) Harvest Season (Mar Apr)
- Cold season (Nov Dec) Heat season (Jul Aug)
- Ripe season (May Jun) Winter season (Jan Feb)
----------------------------------------------------
A series of Rashis explains the reference
of the six seasons
----------------------------------------
- RIPE refers to early summery when
fruit ripens Indeed the word RIPE
can refer to DRIED DATES (2S16-02)
Here the METONOMY principle is used
since the SEASON is called by the fruit
RELATED to that season
----------------------------------------
Rashi now infers the meaning of the remaining
seasons by their ALIGNMENT.
- HEAT season is to hot for anything
- RIPE season allows ripening of some fruit
Hence by ALIGNMENT--HEAT-COLD go together similar
to RIPE-WINTER-- we infer that
- COLD season is to COLD for anything
- WINTER season would be a little warmer
We have given approximate months associated with
the seasons above. (Rashi actually uses half months--
so that e.g. RIPE season is END APR MAY BEGINNNING-JUNE
and HOT SEASON is END-JUNE JULY BEGINNING-AUGUST.

NOTES
-----
*1 Rashi's argument is as follows
- RIPE season is good for some fruit (like Dates*10)
- but HEAT season is to hot for anything
In a similar manner
- COLD season would be like HEAT season (to COLD for
anything) while
- WINTER would be like RIPE season and not as severe
Technically this Rashi ALIGNMENT can be understood as
an analogy
-----------------------
RIPE:HOT::WINTER:COLD
-----------------------
*2 Rashi is more specific with the MONTHS. For example HEAT
SEASON is identified with
- END JUNE
- JULY
- BEGINNING AUGUST
This is more accurate then JULY AUGUST. We have
used the non-half month version for reasons of brevity.
