VERSE: Gn11-32a
RASHIS COVERED: Gn11-32a Gn13-03b Gn14-04a Gn14-05a
======================== Gn11-32a ============================
SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi will very often take a verse whose
meaning is ALREADY understood and ADD a consequence
to the verse.
In other words the
- WORDS and
- GRAMMAR
used by the verse are standard and understood.
- OTHER VERSES do not add further details to
the verses meaning.
If Rashi adds consequences or assumptions or methods to
the verses meaning we call this the SPREADSHEET
method since SPREADSHEETS are very often
used to derive consequences from otherwise
understood data.
If the additional inferences are
- numerical, and can be depicted with a
SPREADSHEET of numbers we say Rashi is
using the ALGEBRAIC spreadsheet method
- diagramatic, we say Rashi is using the
GEOMETRIC spreadsheet method
- verbal-logical, we say Rashi is using
the CONSEQUENCE SPREADSHEET method.
EXAMPLE Gn11-32a
----------------
Rashi gathers 3 verses as follows
---------------------------------------------------------
Verse Event Age Of Whom Sequence
-------- ------------------------- ---- -------- --------
Gn11-26 Abraham born to Terach 70 Terach (A)
Gn12-04 Abraham left Charan 75 Abraham (C)
------- Terach's age when Abe left 145
Gn11-32 Terach dies 205 Terach (B)
------- After Abe left:Years left 60
---------------------------------------------------------
As the above SPREADSHEET shows, Terach lives 60 years
after Abraham left. It would appear that Abraham left
his old father to establish his own life. This would be
perojative to Abraham!
Hence the Bible reverses the sequence order and indicates
Terachs death BEFORE Abrahams leaving. The basic point
is that Abraham founded monotheism (or its spread) and
could not do this in the house of an idolater--hence he
HAD to leave.
Rashi dresses up this point with several sermonic points
that we need not go into. The main focus is that Abraham
had to leave to start his own life but the Bible did not
want to insinuate that Abraham was disrespectful to his
father.
LIST690b below summarizes this SPREADSHEET. LIST690z below
presents other Rashis using the SPREADSHEET principle.
EXAMPLE Gn13-03b
----------------
Verse Gn13-03b states
-------------------------------------
Abraham went according to his journeys
FROM the SOUTH
TOWARDS BethEl....
-------------------------------------
Rashi explains a GEOMETRIC point
---------------------------------
EGYPT is SOUTH of ISRAEL
Abraham had just been expelled from EGYPT,
and was Journeying to BethEl in Israel.
Hence the word SOUTH in Gn13-03b refers to EGYPT
---------------------------------
As we have explained numerous times the SPREADSHEET
method can equally refer to ALGREBRAIC COMPUTATIONS
or GEOMETRIC DIAGRAMS (Such as occur in geographic
Rashis).
EXAMPLE Gn14-04a Gn14-05a
-------------------------
Rashi CLARIFIES the sequences of events in
Gn14-01:04 using a spreadsheet
