VERSE: Gn25-21a

time A-T-R refers to ALOT OF PRAYER *1

(5) Jer33-6 Having ALOT of peace/truth
RULE: In the HIFIL grammatical mode A-T-R refers to
praying for someone else while in the KAL mode A-T-R
refers to praying for oneself.
EXAMPLES:
---------
(1) Ex08-05c "Moses prayed for Pharoh" (Uses HIFIL mode)
(2) Ez35-13 "Esauv issued propaganda for whole nation"(HIFIL)
(3) Job22-27 Person praying for his children (HIFIL)
(4) Ju13-08 Manoach prayed for himself & his wife (KAL)
(5) Gn25-21 Isaac prayed for himself and his wife (KAL)*2
NOTES
-----
*1 The RDK does a masterful pedagogic job: He 1st points out
that A-T-R seems to mean prayer (83% of occurences). RDK then
cites Examples2-5 above where A-T-R means "ALOT". RDK then
suggests a unifying explanation of ALOT OF ANYTHING (Prayer
or other things). This reading of RDK helps appreciation of
Rashi.
*2 The verse appears to say that Isaac prayed for his wife.
But this would require a HIFIL mode. Rashi brilliantly points
out that Isaac, besides praying his wife should have children
(a prayer for her), also prayed that he should not be humiliated
by being forced to marry a concubine to have children (Thus the
prayer was really for himself). Thus Rashi is commenting on
the HIFIL.
