VERSE: Gn27-01a
Rashi examines all the places that Esauvs wives are mentioned
---------------------------------------------------------
Gn36-02:03 Esauv's wives were
1) ADH the chitite (A Canaanite)
2) AHALIVAMAH the chivite (A Canaanite)
3) BSMTH the Arab
Gn28-09 3) MCLTH the Arab (who was not a CANAANITE)
----------------------------------------------------------
So we conclude that MCLTH and BSMTH were 2 names for the
same woman.
-------------------------------------------------------------
To find out why the same woman was called
MCLTH and BSMTH we review the meanings of their roots which
mean
BSM = PERFUMED
MCLTH=FORGIVEN
Anyone (not just Rashi) can easily figure out that
BSMTH liked to PERFUME herself alot
MCLTH, signifies that ESAUV wanted his father's
forgiveness for marrying the Canaanite
wives*1 *2
NOTES
-----
*1 Indeed it says
Gn26-34 ..And Esauv took Canaanite wives
And they caused great bitterness to Isaac and Rivkah*2
Gn28-06 ..And Esauv saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob
not to take wives from the Canaanites and that
Canaanite wives were BAD in the eyes of his father
Gn28-09 And Esauv went and took an Arab wife MCHLATH
So it seems that Esauv married MCHLATH to obtain his
fathers FORGIVENESS (MCHL)
*2 We bring in the Rashi on Gn27-01. Note the following verses
Gn26-34 Esauv took Canaanite wives , BSMTH (Perfume)
Gn26-45 And this caused bitterness to Isaac and Rivkah
Gn27-01 And when Isaac got older his vision dimmed
Gn27-46 And Rivkah said I can't stand these Canaanite
wives..If Jacob takes a Canaanite wife why
should I want to live
So Chazal put the "can't stand them" with the name "Perfume"
and suggested that Rivkah couldn't stand the constant perfume
smell in the house (either worn to entice people or else
it was idolatrous perfume)
The MAIN POINT IS THAT THE VARIOUS MIDRASHIM COME STRAIGHT
FROM THE TONE OF THE VERSES.
