VERSE: Gn32-29b

======================== Gn32-29b ============================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Rashi frequently makes powerful inferences from the ALIGNMENT,
that is, the word by word comparison, of almost identical
verses. The minor variations between these almost similar
verses suggests nuances and differences or even meaning. We
call this the Rashi rule of ALIGNMENT

-When Rashi identifies two cases from the ALIGNMENT we call
this the Rashi subrule of TWO CASES

-When Rashi infers nuances from the variations between the
almost similar verses (or verse phrases) we call this the
Rashi subrule of NUANCES.

-When Rashi infers MEANING from the ALIGNMENT of almost
identical phrases we call this the Rashi SUBRULE of MEANING.

EXAMPLE Gn32-29b
----------------
Verse Gn32-29 states
---------------------------------------
They will not SAY your name is JACOB
Rather ISRAEL will be your name
since you have fought with Leaders
and People and have succeeded
---------------------------------------

Rashi, punning on the meanings of JACOB,
which means to GRAB and ISRAEL
which means to FIGHT states
-------------------------------------
People will no longer call you a GRABBER (JACOB)
or second son but rather call you a FIGHTER (ISRAEL)
since you have fought with Leaders
and People have succeeded
--------------------------------------

Rashi interprets the verse as referring
to the MEANING of the names (GRAB=JACOB,
FIGHT=ISRAEL) rather than the NAMES THEMSELVES.
This approach of Rashi can be justified by the
following ALIGNMENT of verses presenting names
-----------------------------------------
Gn17-05 your name will not be CALLED ABRAM
Gn34-10 your name will not be CALLED JACOB
Is04-01 women will say to a man CALL your last name on us
Gn04-25 she CALLED the name of the Child...
- - - - - - - - - - - - -
Gn32-29 your name will not be SAID as JACOB
-----------------------------------------

Notice the blatant difference---SAY A NAME
vs CALL A NAME. The list shows that CALL A
NAME is the normal way of giving a name.
The phrase SAY A NAME is anamolous. It is
therefore the ALIGNMENT that drives Rashi
to emphasize the nuances of SAY vs CALL---
Rashi emphasizes that CALL vs SAY can just
refer to the NAME itself while SAY refers
to the underlying thoughts and reasons
behind the words. Hence Rashi states
-------------------------------------
People will no longer nickname you
the GRABBER=JACOB but rather will nickname
you the FIGHTER = ISRAEL because you
have fought with leaders and men and succeeded
--------------------------------------

It is important to emphasize here that this
Rashi is NOT an example of WORD MEANING---
the phrase SAY A NAME by itself would not
justify looking into the reasons for the naming;
it is rather the ALIGNMENT which emphasizes
the contrastive nuances of SAY vs CALL and requires
us to look at reasons.

LIST309k summarizes this ALIGNMENT.
