==================== THIN FLESH = EMACIATED ====================

TODAYS RASHI SUBRULE: NEW MEANINGS
--------------------------------------------------
BRIEF EXPLANATION OF RULE AND SUBRULE
--------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words
the same way the dictionary does. However unlike a dictionary
Rashi not only explains words but Rashi also explains PHRASES
Each word of the phrase may have a clear meaning but together
the entire phrase has a NEW IDIOMATIC MEANING.
Thus today Rashi translates the phrase THIN FLESH as meaning
EMACIATED. Another less obvious example is that Rashi shows
that the phrase ON THE FACE OF means DURING THE LIFETIME

TODAYS LIST
-----------
We review several phrases which have an idiomatic meaning.
The footnotes give added Rashis. For example the 5th line
tells us that the phrase ON THE FACE OF means DURING THE
LIFETIME. ONE example of this is Gn11-28a. Footnote *1
gives 4 other examples. *10

------------------- LONGER FOOTNOTES --------------------
*10 Also see Rashi: Gn41-19a, DALOTH means EMACIATED
Note that here we have the Hebrew DALATH by itself
without the Hebrew phrase DALATH BASAR.
Rashi on Gn41-19a proves that DALATH by itself
can mean EMACIATED from the verse 2S13-04 in which
Yonadav asks Amnon who had fallen in love with Tamar
------------------
Why are you so DAL
------------------
There are three suggested translations to DAL:
Radack translates this as - Why are you so SICK
Rashi seems to translate -- Why are you EMACIATED
I would suggest Rashi as saying - Why are you DEPRESSED
In fact the Hebrew word Caph-Chet-Vav-Shin can equally
- mean EMACIATED
- mean DENIAL
DENIAL is a fit word for DEPRESSED.
This translation is consistent with 2S13-02 in which
Yonadav asks Amnon why he has become LOVESICK.
LOVESICKNESS is usually associated with DENIAL or
more technically with SOCIAL WITHDRAWAL(Which looks
like denial)
However on Gn41-19a I would assume that DALATH means
emaciated the same way DALATH BASAR in Gn41-03 means
emaciated.
In summary:
- DAL BASAR (THIN SKINNED) means EMACIATED
- DAL by itself can mean DEPRESSED
- DAL in Gn41-19 has the same meaning
as DAL BASAR(Gn41-03) and means emaciated
In passing the basic meanings of DAL is DWINDLING as in
- DWINDLING water supply (Is19-06)
- POVERTY (DWINDLING money) (Lv14-21)
- DEPRESSED/DENIAL (DWINDLING social contact)(2S13-02)
- LOCK OF HAIR (DWINDLING hair)(Songs07-07)

BRIEF EXPLANATION OF TODAYS RASHI RULE
--------------------------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words
the same way the dictionary does. One way of verifying the
meaning of a word is to explore other verses with the same word.
Thus today we show that Bet-Resh-Aleph means PLUMP. We show
this by citing other verses where this meaning is clear.
