VERSE: Gn43-33a

RASHIS COVERED: Gn43-33a Gn43-10a

======================== Gn43-33a ============================

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
All Rashis clarify the meaning of a verse.
Most Rashis clarify the meaning of verses by
- explaining MEANING including SYMBOLIC meaning
- using GRAMMAR of verbs, sentences or FORMATTING
- using GRAMMAR of paragraphs (STYLE), or
- comparisons with OTHER VERSES including ALIGNMENTS,
  CONTRADICTORY VERSES, DATABASE inquiries

If however Rashi clarifies the meaning of a verse
- by making reasonable background assumptions
- add computations or
- exhibiting diagrams
then we say Rashi has used the SPREADSHEET method.
The term SPREADSHEET typically refers to COMPUTATIONAL
clarifications--we however have used it to refer to
any type of NON-VERSE clarification whether it is
- numerical
- geometric
- background fill-in.

Todays examples illustrate the above.

EXAMPLE 1: Gn43-33a
--------------------
Gn43-33 describing Joseph's identification of family
place among his brothers states
-----------------------------------------------
And Joseph sat them...the eldest according to
his eldest status and the youngest according to
his youngest status
-----------------------------------------------

Rashi FILLS IN background and shows a plausible
method by which this could happen
-------------------------------------------
He tapped his goblet and said
- This is the eldest of one wife
- this is the 2nd eldest of the same wife
...
- this is the eldest of another wife
- this person has no brother
-------------------------------------------

Such a display of knowledge without source
was suppose to inspire awe in the brothers

Clearly Rashi is NOT deriving anything
from the text but rather FILLING IN BACKGROUND

EXAMPLE 2: Gn43-10a
-------------------
Gn43-10a describing the discussion between Judah
and his father on obtaining food from Egypt states
------------------------------------------------
If you give us Benjamin we will get food and if not
there is no point...for if we hadn't delayed we would
have returned twice
------------------------------------------------

Rashi explains this using a minor spreadsheet
-------------------------------------------
e.g.
--- We need to pick up food every month
--- but because we delayed we have not picked
up food for two months
--- If we hadn't delayed we would have returned
twice (and brought back Shimon )
---------------------------------------------

NOTES
-----
*1 Rashi literally says
   ---------------------------------------
The waters of the well rose for Abraham
   ---------------------------------------

   We have interpreted this broadly
   ---------------------------------------
Abraham knew the hours when it was easiest
   to obtain good well water
   ---------------------------------------

Hence BECAUSE Abraham knew the well he
could feed his sheep properly resulting
   in healthier sheep.

Avimelech, by taking the sheep acknowledged
that the sheep were a gift worthy of a king.
This implied that Abraham knew the ins and outs
of the well water and was the true owner of the well
