GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we switch gears. Prior to this unit we have
been focusing on the grammatical conjugation of verbs. We
now move on to other grammatical areas. Today we study
sentences whose interpretation requires the reader to
fill in missing words.

MISSING WORDS IN SENTENCES

EXAMPLE 72: Ex22-22a If you [dare] torture him.
EXAMPLE 73: Gn04-15a Therefore if anyone [dares] kills Kayin.

BACKGROUND
-----------
A favorite technique of politicians is to let the listener
fill in. By forcing the listener to construct the sentence
they are more apt to believe it (Since they constructed it).

THE TEXT
--------
If you [dare] do such and such!

THE RASHI:
----------
The above sentence is intepreted to mean
------------------------------------------
If you dare do such and such then whatever
you consider bad will happen to you
------------------------------------------
This sentence has a better effect on the listener
than explicit statement since the listener participates
in construction of the sentence.

THE LIST
--------
As mentioned yesterday this list will grow until it provides
a number of types of sentences with missing words. The
technique of missing words in a sentence is called ellipsis.
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE (Missing word is in brackets)
Ex10-05b The LOCUST will cover earth; & THEY[people]cant see*1
Ex10-11c PHAROH said: Not so; and HE [the staff] expelled them*2
Ex22-22a If you [dare] hurt the orphan*3 *4
Gn04-15a Therefore whoever [dares] kills Kayin*3
COMMENTS
*1 Note if you interpret the verse literally (with pronouns
referring to the last mentioned noun) then the verse would
   amusingly read
   -------------------------------------------------------
The LOCUSTS will cover the earth and THEY (THE LOCUSTS)
will not be able to see where they are going
   -------------------------------------------------------

*2 Again if you interpret the verse literally it reads
   -------------------------------------------------------
   And PHAROH said: Not so--only the men should serve God;
and HE (PHAROH) expelled them from PHAROH
   -------------------------------------------------------
Of course it is possible that Pharoh personally expelled them
Rashis point is that it is possible that someone else (eg
   Pharohs staff) expelled them

*3 This has elliptical effect. In effect the sentence is heard as
   -------------------------------------------------------
If you dare do such and such then your
worst fear will happen to you
   -------------------------------------------------------

*4 Rashi points out there are two sentences in this verse
Here is how the whole verse would read
   --------------------------------------------------------
If you dare hurt an orphan then it will be bad with you.
But if the orphan prays against you then I will kill you
and make your wives widows and your children orphans
   --------------------------------------------------------
So there are two cases depending on whether the orphans/widow
   pray or not.
