GOALS ===== This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar. In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks TODAYS UNIT =========== In todays unit we switch gears. Prior to this unit we have been focusing on the grammatical conjugation of verbs. We now move on to other grammatical areas. Today we review the difference between the ADJECTIVAL and CONSTRUCT states REFERENCE: ========= Todays unit comes from the following postings http://www.RashiYomi.Com/ex28-04g.htm |

EXAMPLE 84: Ex28-04b BIGDAY KODESH means TEMPLE CLOTHES EXAMPLE 85: Lv16-04b BIGDAY KODESH means TEMPLE CLOTHES BACKGROUND: ----------- The same word can function either -- as an ADJECTIVE, telling us PROPERTIES of the noun, or -- as a CONSTRUCT, telling us who the noun-object BELONGS to THE RASHI ------------------ -- To indicate an ADJECTIVE: Use the NOUN-ADJECTIVE order -- To indicate a CONSTRUCT: Use the CONSTRUCT-NOUN order -- To indicate an ADJECTIVE: Use the ADJECTIVE conjugation -- To indicate a CONSTRUCT: Use the CONSTRUCT conjugation THE TEXT -------- The verses below speak about:BIGDAY (Clothes of) KODESH(the Holy) -- The CONSTRUCT conjugation is used: BIGDAY (Clothes of) -- The CONSTRUCT-NOUN order is used: CLOTHES of the HOLY Hence we concluded that the phrase BIGDAY KODESH -- does NOT mean HOLY CLOTHES (BeGaDiM KeDoShiM) -- but RATHER means CLOTHES OF THE TEMPLE (BIGDAY KODESH) That is, the word KODESH here functions as a noun (The temple) indicating WHO the clothes belong to REFERENCE --------- Any standard Grammar book contains conjugation forms of the Construct and Adjectival form. A good abridged source with many forms is the Appendix to the Ibn Shoshan Dictionary volume 5.
