GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
Today we complete the 3 day subunit dealing with a
beautiful principle of the Malbim concerning the 2
Hebrew methods of designating pronouns.

REFERENCE:
=========
Todays unit comes from the following postings

http://www.RashiYomi.Com/dt01-24b.htm

OTHO means ONLY IT; Suffix O means IT

EXAMPLE 157: Lv20-05b I will cut ONLY HIM off(But not family)
EXAMPLE 158: Lv14-06b take ONLY the bird(but not other items)

BACKGROUND
----------
If you wish to indicate that a verb, or activity, is being done
to something then you append a suffix VAV to the word(pronounced
OH) thereby indicating that the activity was done to it.

THE TEXT
--------
For example: SHaCHaT means SLAUGHTER; SHaCHaTO means SLAUGHTER IT

THE RASHI
---------
But there are two ways to indicate IT
- APPEND A VAV: SHaCHaTO means SLAUGHTER IT
- ADD THE WORD OTHO: SHaCHaT OTO also means SLAUGHTER IT

THE MALBIM
----------
A beautiful MALBIM distinguishes between these two methods
-- SHaCHaTO is the normal way of saying SLAUGHTER IT
-- SHaCHaT OTO should really be translated SLAUGHTER ONLY IT
In other words SHaCHaT OTO denotes some type of EXCLUSIVITY
As we go thru the examples we will develop a feel for the
OTO form. Malbim applied this principle to both Rashi & Sifrah

THE LIST
--------
This list will develop over 2-3 days. We will take verses
with the OTO form and show how Rashi interpreted IT
with a nuance of exclusivity.
VERSE TEXT RASHI
Lv20-05b & I will cut ONLY HIM off from But not his family *4
Dt01-24b They spied ALL OF IT Full scouting *5
COMMENTS
*4 Again there is a contrast in the verse which is speaking about
the Molech worship (which consists of placing children thru
fire) The verse says that if these people go unpunished then

"I will PLACE MY FACE against this person AND his family
and I will CUT OFF ONLY HIM from his nation"

Thus the family is punished with "GODS FACE AGAINST THEM"
While the person is punished with "BEING CUT OFF"

By saying "I will cut off ONLY HIM" there is emphasis
that ONLY the sinner gets cut off

Rashi further explains that the family "knew what was going
on" and hence they are punished by "GODS FACE AGAINST THEM"

*5 "Scouting" could denote "perusing" the land. "Full scouting"
denotes crisscrossing the entire country and looking over
    every detail (Leaving out nothing!)

After presenting this explanation a young Yeshiva Student
from Scranton suggested that Rashi could equally be based
on the difference between TUR and RGL both of which mean
    to spy.

-TUR has an emphasis on ordinary spying
    -RGL literally means
"to FOOT the land" or "to TRACK the land"

Since RGL is a more intense form, its nuances would imply
that they looked over EVERY FOOT OF LAND. An analysis of
Biblical verses indeed confirms this Yeshiva students hunch:
RGL is used for spying prior to a war and could easily denote
a more intense form of spying.

Thus Rashi has two justifications. (For further details
& lists see the posting referenced at the top of this unit)
