BACKGROUND
----------
We all know how to make simple sentences into complex sentences.
We simply connect the sentences with appropriate abstract
pronouns. For example: If I wanted to connect these 2 sentences:
- I bought the coat
- This coat was on sale

Then I would connect the 2 sentences with a word like THAT
- I bought the coat THAT was on sale.

I could also sloppily say
- I bought the coat on sale.

It would then facilitate the understanding of this sentence to
reinsert the missing word THAT:
- I bought the coat [THAT WAS] on sale.


THE VERSE: Gn39-04

- Everything he owned he placed under him


THE RASHI
---------
The sentence sounds better if you reinsert the word THAT:
- Everything [THAT] he owned he placed under him.

   RASHI: The full sentence reads

   HAD he placed under him

   The sentence would sound better if we inserted the missing
   word THAT. The verse would then read
   ----------------------------------------------------------
   he appointed him on his household
   and EVERYTHING THAT HE HAD he placed under him
   ----------------------------------------------------------

   RASHI: The phrase
   ----------------------------------------
   AND THE LAND WAS NOT SUFFICIENT FOR
   BOTH OF THEM
   ----------------------------------------
   makes it sound like they had too many
   people and there werent enough apartments.


   The surrounding context makes the sentence sound better
   if we insert the missing word PASTURE.The verse then reads
   ---------------------------------------------------------
   AND THE PASTURE OF THE LAND WAS
   NOT SUFFICIENT FOR THEM
   ---------------------------------------------------------

   Rashi also presents a grammatical argument for the above.
   The word SUFFICIENT is masculine which could link to
   PASTURE which is masculine but not to LAND which is
   feminine.
