GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In todays unit we review some technical matters:
- the distinction between THE BAKER vs HE WHO BAKES
- the fact that some words are DUAL GENDERED

REFERENCE:

Todays unit comes from the following postings

DUAL GENDERED WORDS

EXAMPLE 131: Gn32-09a CAMP is both MASCULINE and FEMININE

NOTE:This Rashi is miscoded and really occurs at
Gn33-08. The database and this posting will
eventually rectify this mistake.
COMMENT:
--------
This is one of those rare Rashis where Rashi explicitly defends
himself using a LIST OF EXAMPLES, the way we do, in this email
list.

RULE
----
In Hebrew, unlike English, every word has a GENDER and this
effects conjugation of verbs. However certain words are bi-gender
That is these words can appear with both masculine and feminine
gender

LIST
----
A collection of words that have both MASCULINE and FEMININE
forms. For each word we give a verse where it is conjugated
in MASCULINE and a verse where it is conjugated FEMININE
WORD MASCULINE FORM FEMININE FORM

THE BAKER vs HE WHO BAKES

EXAMPLE 132: Gn40-01c The BAKER is more than someone WHO BAKES
EXAMPLE 133: Gn14-19a The OWNER is more than someone WHO BUYS

BACKGROUND
----------
We all know the distinction between an object & process
-- HE WHO BAKES is someone who does baking
-- THE BAKER is someone whose official JOB is baking

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi lays down the rule that Present tense verbs, unless
they are really needed as a verb, refer not to an ACTIVITY
but rather to a JOB

THE LIST
--------
The list below contains Present form verbs which
however really refer to the person whose JOB is
to do that activity.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
---------------
The above list was compiled with the help of the New Grammatical
Form Konkordance, entitled, SEFER AMAYLIM BATORAH, compiled by
Al Silberman from Monsey.
VERSE PERSON ROOT (VERB FORM)
Gn40-01c Baker To bake
2Sa24-11 Prophet To vision
Dt24-11 Lender To create a Lien
Ez03-17 Prophet To see distantly
Gn14-19a Owner*4 To buy*1
COMMENTS
*1 The BUYER could simply buy the object and sell it--he
could act as a middleman. The OWNER however is a person
who permanantly bought the object -- that is, his job
is to have the object bought.
