GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
It is exciting but we are finally completing this GRAMMAR
module. We will publish a grand summary showing 5 types of
GRAMMAR comments that Rashi provides insight on. In the
last few days we will cover about a dozen left over Rashis.

Today we cover Rashis on the following topic:
- Rashi comments on RARE CONJUGATIONS OF THE COMMAND
- The word LAYMOR (TO SAY) means an answer was expected
Moses had 5 prayers where the phrase TO SAY occurs...
These were intense prayers where Moses requested guidance

THE COMMAND FORM

EXAMPLE 136: Ex21-29b The command form of L-K-Ch drops the Lamed

BACKGROUND
----------
It is well known that Hebrew grammar rests on 3 letter roots
which are conjugated in various forms each with its own meaning

REFERENCES
----------
Ibn Shoshan Dictionary Volume 5 Appendix--Contains several dozen
charts which summarize most of Hebrew grammar

Al Silbermans Grammatical Form Konkordance contains lists BY
CONJUGATION form; this is useful for examining statistics.

THE HEBREW COMMAND
------------------
There are 2 cases for the Command-Conjugation form
- The typical command uses the 3 root letters with a shva
and patach pronunciation. For example the Hebrew LeKaCh
means TAKE (The command form)

- When the first letter of the 3 letter root is NUN then
the command form uses only the last 2 letters with a
patach. A catchy way of saying this is to observe that
the 1st LETTER is dropped. For Example, the Hebrew
GASH means to COME NEAR; it comes from the Hebrew root
Nun-Gimel-Shin

THE ONE EXCEPTION
-----------------
The above rule has one exception. The Hebrew root
Lamed-Kuph-Cheth can be conjugated EITHER
-- with all 3 letters (LeKach as in Ex29-01) or
-- with 2 letters (Kach as in Gn06-21)
Both these forms mean TAKE.

THE RASHI
---------
So now it is clear why Rashi is commenting. I dont expect
a 2 letter command form for KACH since its root starts with
a LAMED and not with a NUN.Therefore Rashi had to tell us
that it is an exception.

THE LIST
--------
- We show normal conjugations of the command form (28 in Bible)
- We show how roots beginning with NUN drop the first letter
- We show how LeKaCh has 2 conjugation forms
- We display the 3 other roots beginning with Lamed
They do not drop the 1st letter.

The statistics on the frequency of these roots helps us
appreciate the Rashi. Here is the list. In the list below
- NORMAL means a normal conjugation with 3 letters
- Begin-n means the root begins with the letter NUN
- Begin-L means the root begins with the Leter L

TO SAY requests an ANSWER

EXAMPLE 137: Dt03-26b TO SAY indicates a request for an answer

RULE:
-----
The infinitive TO SAY means a response is expected.
Something was done with a response expected.

THE TEXT (eg Nu12-13)
---------------------
And Moses screamed to God, TO SAY: Please cure her, God

THE RASHI
---------
The capped words TO SAY shows that Moses was not only
praying but functioning as a prophet and requesting an
answer. He was requesting insight on why she was being
punished which was answered by God at the end of the Chapter

THE LIST
--------
The list below displays the 5 cases where Moses insisted
that God answer him These are the only 5 verses where Moses
prayer use the word TO SAY indicating that Moses demanded
an answer*1
VERSE VERB MOSES PETITION
Ex06-12 Said even the jews dont listen;how should Pharoh
Nu27-15 Said Please appoint a successor after my death
Ex17-04 Scream The Jews only complain; soon they'll kill me
Nu12-13 Scream Please cure my Sister Miryam
Dt03-26b Supplicated Please let me enter the land
COMMENTS
*1 Those interested in statistical counts would do well to
   study this Rashi.

As can be seen the above list has FIVE examples.

However as the Sifsay Chachamim points out the
description of Moses prayer is different in these
5 verses. For example, sometimes Moses prayer is described
as MOSES SCREAMED TO GOD while at other times it is
described as MOSES SAID TO GOD. In fact

   - 5 times Moses spoke to God and requested an answer
   - 4 times we find the phrase "to God TO SAY
   - 3 times Moses would not leave God alone till he answered him

Hence depending on what you are counting you may find 5
4 or 3 prayers by Moses to God. Such ambiguous counting
is common in the Mesorah world and
as can be seen all 3 formulations are correct
notes it *4 These are the 4 roots beginning with Lamed. All of them occur in NORMAL conjugation with 3 root letters. Only one of them (LEKACH) has an alternative form with 2 letters. This is an exception and hence Rashi comments
