GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
In Today unit we see how Rashi presents ALTERNATIVE conjugations
to the more popular conjugations taught in grammar books.

ALTERNATIVE CONJUGATIONS

EXAMPLE 28: Gn07-23a Va-Yee-MaCH is an alternative to Ve-YiM-Cheh
EXAMPLE 29: Gn24-65a Va-Tis-CaTH is an alternative to VaTisCaSeh

BACKGROUND
----------
Hebrew grammar is based on three letter Hebrew roots. Each 3
letter root verb can be conjugated in a variety of forms. These
conjugations are presented in modern Hebrew grammar books. For
example SMRti means I WATCHED while tSMRi means SHE WILL WATCH;
both examples come from the 3 letter hebrew root SMR.

RULES
-----
However at a more advanced stage we learn that there can be
alternative competing conjugations with the same meaning.

THE RASHI--EXAMPLES
-------------------
Thus Rashi (Gn07-23a) explains that VA-YEE-MACH has the
same meaning as the traditional Ve-YiM-CHEH. Both these
forms mean AND GOD erased LIFE FROM THE WORLD

Similarly on Gn24-65a Rashi explains that VA-TIS-CATH is
an alternative form to the traditional HITPAEL CONJUGATION:
Ve-TiS-CaSeH. Both these forms mean SHE(RIVKAH) LET HER
MAIDS veil HER*1

THE LIST
--------
THe list below (supplied by Rashi himself) gives roots which
appear in BOTH the traditional and alternative conjugations
in the Bible. Thus these examples support Rashis alternative
conjugation examples. The ROOT and MEANING are presented
with the 2 conjugations (CONJUGATE1, CONJUGATE2) and the 2
supporting verses (VERSE1, VERSE2) *2
3 Letter Roots Means Conjugation1 VERSE1 CONJUGATE2 VERSE2
[Beth]-[Nun]-[Hey] Build Ve Yi V Ne H Ps69-36 Va Yi Ve N Gn02-22

COMMENTS
*1 I am interpreting the REFLEXIVE conjugation of TO COVER in
a PASSIVE manner (Rivkah LET HER MAIDS COVER/VEIL HER).
Actually the REFLEXIVE MODE is used to denote INTERACTION.
Thus Rivkah letting her maids cover her could be expressed
   in the REFLEXIVE MODE.

   We offer some further support:
   - Prv26-26 THE EVIL PERSON LETS HIS HATRED BE COVERED UP
is another example of the REFLEXIVE MODE denoting
     COVERING UP.

   - Prv26-26 uses a hybrid conjugation(elements of 2
distinct conjugations). For further examples of
     hybridism see (Ex18-26, Lv04-23, Prv26-26).

   - We have interpreted the verse as meaning that RIVKAH covered
her hair. See Gn38-14 for another example showing that
religious women cover their hair. Thus the translation
     we provided is plausible.

In any event RASHIS MAIN POINT is that VATISCAS is an
alternative conjugation to VETISCASEH; a secondary non-
grammatical point is that the verse means that she let
   her maids cover her up

*2 I am indebted to Alfred Silvermans Grammatical Konkordance
for statistical evidence on this phenomenon of alternative
   conjugations.
