   I WILL POST SUNDAY MY DESCRIPTION OF MY TRIP TO ISRAEL

   ENGLISH RASHI:       http://www.mnemotrix.com/metsudah
   THE WHITE PAPERS:    http://www.RashiYomi.Com/white.htm
   =========================================================
GOALS
=====
This module studies Rashis treatment of classical grammar.
In other words how did Rashi treat the rules you find in
modern LEARN-HEBREW textbooks

TODAYS UNIT
===========
Besides expanding out knowledge of grammatical conjugations
Rashi also expanded out knowledge of grammatical modes.
For example the INTENSIVE MODE can also means CAUSATION

REFERENCE:

Todays unit comes from the following postings

PIEL(INTENSIVE) CAN MEAN CAUSATION

EXAMPLE 30: Dt04-10b LMD: Active tense= LEARN: INTENSIVE=TEACH
EXAMPLE 31: Dt04-10c LMD: Active tense= LEARN: INTENSIVE=TEACH
EXAMPLE 32: Gn21-09a TZ-CH-K in PIEL denotes MOCKING
EXAMPLE 33: Ex32-06b TZ-CH-K in piel denotes a BRAWL
EXAMPLE 34: Gn26-08b TZ-Ch-K in Piel means SEXUALLY PLAYFUL

BACKGROUND
----------
Hebrew grammar is based on three letter Hebrew roots. Each 3
letter root verb can be conjugated in a variety of forms. These
conjugations are presented in modern Hebrew grammar books. For
example SMRti means I WATCHED while tSMRi means SHE WILL WATCH;
both examples come from the 3 letter hebrew root SMR.

THE 7 MODES
-----------
Each root can be presented in 7 modes: ACTIVE, PASSIVE,
INTENSIVE, CAUSATIVE, INTERACTIVE etc. Traditional
grammar books explain that the PIEL mode denotes INTENSE
activity (e.g. SHAVAR means BREAK while SHIBER means SHATTER)

THE RASHI
---------
Rashi however points out that the INTENSIVE MODE can
denote CAUSATION (Radack makes a similar point in his
GRAMMAR book)

THE LIST
--------
In the LIST below we show how the intensive form a verb
can mean either INTENSITY or CAUSATION. Thus we see
that
-- LeMYD in the PIEL mode means TEACH (Cause to LEARN)
-- LaMaD in the KAL mode means LEARN
-- TZCHK in the KAL mode means LAUGH(Not on LIst)
-- TZCHK in the PIEL mode means MOCK, BRAWL, or SEX
In each case this is an INTENSE form of LAUGHTER

COMMENTS
*1 Rashi.

*2 Rashi. Note that the interpretation of Ex32-06 as referring
   to murder is supported by the explicit other verse Ex32-18
-----------------------------------------------------------------
And (Moses) Said: It is not the shouts of people upset nor is it
the shouts of a victory but rather it is the shouts of shouting(a
brawl)". Please examine the verse yourselves.
-----------------------------------------------------------------

  This helps establish that a murder took place. The fact that
  CHUR was killed is guessed at because we never find him
  mentioned again. NOTE: Rashi did NOT derive the fact that
  Chur was killed from the absence of his name---rather Rashi
  derived that someone was killed from the above explicit verse
  Ex32-18 and the use of the term BRAWL.

*3 Although this verse looks like it is saying that Isaac and
  Rivkah were PLAYING nevertheless the connective word used
  is SLEPT OF (vs the usual SLEPT WITH )--this suggests that
  it was a teasing behavior.

  2Sam6-21 I WILL DANCE WILDLY BEFORE GOD does not look
  perjorative Perhaps the dance symbolically made fun of
  Gods enemies. Michals protests also seem to indicate that
  the dance was not appropriate

*4 For these examples recall that LeMYD is in PIEL (INTENSIVE)
   and means TEACH (Cause others to learn) while LaMaD is in
   the KAL (ACTIVE) and means to LEARN.
