QUESTION (Yitz Lowenstein-Baltimore)
--------
You claim that Rashi only gives simple meaning.
But Ex02-05c states PHAROHS DAUGHTER SENT HER
MAID TO GET THE CHILD while Rashi cites a
talmudic translation PHAROHS DAUGHTER STRETCHED
HER HAND TO TAKE THE CHILD. Rashi then refutes
this talmudic interpretation. Doesnt this prove
that the Talmudic interpretation is not the
simple meaning.

ANSWER
------
Good question. Actually however the Talmudic
interpretation IS the simple meaning. Here is
how Rashi interprets the verse
- PHAROHS DAUGHTERS MAIDS
- WERE WALKING BY THE NILE
- PHAROHS DAUGHTER SAW THE ARK WITH THE BABY
- AND SHE SENT HER [PERSONAL] MAID TO TAKE IT
Notice how the first part of the verse speaks
about PHAROHS MAIDS (plural) while the 2nd part
of the verse speaks about her MAID (Singular).
So Rashi-is-Simple: The MAID she sent was her
personal maid that she trusted with risky tasks
(The King had forbidden saving Jewish babies and
hence only a special maid could be used). Chazal
use the term HAND MAID to indicate PERSONAL MAID*1

COMMENTS
*1 The way I have explained Rashi makes the
meaning of the text simple. Here is a recap
of problems and solutions

- (a) Chazal state that Pharohs daughter
stretched forth her HAND

- RESPONSE: They mean that Pharohs daughter
used her PERSONAL MAID. Cf the English HANDMAID
Rashi simply points out that grammatically
Chazal COULD NOT have meant that Pharohs
daughter stretched forth her hand Hence
I interpret HAND as HAND MAID (Ones personal
maid)

- (b) Rashi reads HER MAIDS WERE WALKING
to mean HER MAIDS WERE WALKING TO THEIR
DEATH (For violating Pharohs daughters wish
to save the baby) Rashi cites verses where
walking can mean WALKING TO DEATH

- RESPONSE: We need not be literal here.
As I indicated Rashi derives his opinions
from the contrast of SINGULAR and PLURAL.
It is then reasonable that because this
was a difficult task (because saving a
Jewish baby was forbidden) therefore only
her personal trusted hand maid could be
given the assignment. Thus the reference
to a verse where WALK means WALK TO DEATH
is simply a pun--the real reason is
Grammar as indicated above.

VERSE VERSE TEXT POINT OF PLURAL-SINGULAR
Ex02-05c One maid sent Others werent trustworthy*1

Ex19-02b Nation camped In a unified fashion*3
Gn14-14c They SplitS Army divide/conquer*4
Gn49-04 fathers bedS Reuven swapped beds*5
COMMENTS
*1 So: Many maids went down to the river
But PHarohs daughter only trusted one maid
to get the baby

*2 If you steal once you pay a fifth fine
If you steal the SAME object many times
then you pay many fifths (Plural)

*3 The entire nation(plural) campled(singluar)
They acted as a unified whole

*4 First the army went out as a unit
Then they split into groups(Hence the
singular plural contrast)

*5 Cf Gn35-22a which accuses Reuven of incest
Gn49-04 clarifies this: Reuven would swap
bedspreads when his father wanted to sleep
with Bilhah Reuven would swap her bedspread
with Leah(Leah was a full wife while Bilhah
was a maid...hence Reuven felt it was legit
to intefer with his fathers private life)

QUESTION:
---------
The verse says ARRANGE WOOD ON THE ALTAR. How does
Rashi infer that THE WOOD MUST BE EXACTLY ON THE
ALTAR WITHOUT IT PROTRUDING OVER THE EDGE

ANSWER
------
Lv01-07:08 states
- THE PRIESTS SHALL PLACE A fire on the altar
- AND THEY SHALL ARRANGE wood on the fire
- AND THEY SHALL ARRANGE THE SACRIFICE ORGANS....
- ON THE wood on the fire on the altar
Notice how the small case words repeat the phrase
ON THE ALTAR. We use Rashi Workbook principle #18:
REPEATED PHRASES can imply restrictive meaning.
Hence the wood must be EXACTLY on the altar
without any protrusions.

RULE: REPETITION
-----

SUBRULE: RESTRICTIVE MEANING
--------

BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF RULE
-------------------------
The Chumash frequently repeats words or phrases.
There are a variety of Rashi techniques to deal
with such repetitions. For example sometimes
Repetition can indicate a broader, non-standard
meaning. By contrast sometimes, repetition can
indicate a restrictive literal meaning. Todays
example illustrates this.

In Todays example the phrase WOOD ON FIRE ON ALTAR
is repeated twice within 3 verses. The Bible
uses REPEATED WORDS the same way a modern typist
would use CAPS or BOLDS. In other words the repeated
words are as if it was written
-- wood on fire ON ALTAR
The CAPPED phrase, ON ALTAR (or equivalantly the
bold phrase ON ALTAR) would indicate EMPHASIS of
some sort.

STUDENT EXERCISES
-----------------
- If the phrase -- wood on fire ON ALTAR -- is
emphasized then what would you, the reader, think
this emphasis is.

RASHIS SOLUTION
---------------
Rashi suggests that the wood must be EXACTLY on
the altar without wood protruding over the sides
(Traditional bonfires have wood protruding from
the main bonfire).

COMMENTS
*1 Ex31-15b further points out that all holidays which are
referred to as >SABBATH of SABBATH< (Ex31-15, Lv23-32)
have prohibitions of both WORK and EATING. By contrast
all holidays which are only called >SABBATH< (Lv23-23
and Lv23-39) only have a prohibition of Work but not
a prohibition of COOKING. This is fully discussed at

Ibn Ezra seems to disagree and state that GReenReen means a
light green (which would contradict this list). But as I
show in that posting, Ibn Ezra retracted what he said in his
commentary on Ps45-03. In fact Ibn Ezra simply points out
that he was testing the consistency of this rule against all
doubled roots. To make a long story short we reviewed all
roots & found possible problems with only 2 verses, Ps38-11
and Songs6-1. However we can properly translate these verses
Ps38-11 would be translated as >My heart FLUTTERS (intense
back and forth motion)<; Similarly Songs6-1 would be
translated as >Dont avoid me simply because I am very
SUNBURNED (an intense form of DAWN-COLOR)<

QUESTION:
---------
There are 3 sin offerings: For RICH
people, POOR people and VERY POOR people. How
does Rashi infer that if you eg set aside $100
for a RICH offering and then become POOR that you
are allowed to use only say $30 of the $100 to
purchase a POOR offering. But in the reverse case
where you set aside $30 for a POOR offering and
then became RICH then you must add $70

ANSWER
------
We use Rashi Workbook Principle #10: ALIGNMENT
of verses can show 2 cases. Here are the verses:
-Lv04-35(RICH) He will atone IN ADDITION to his
[money for a] sin offering
-Lv05-06(POOR) He will atone FROM his [money
for a] sin offering
-Lv05-13(VERY POOR) He will atone FROM his
[money for a] sin offering.
The CAPPED aligned phrases clearly show 2 cases:
Sometimes he ADDS to set aside money & sometimes
he only takes FROM the set aside money.

QUESTION
--------
Ex01-05a states that PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING ON THE NILE
But Rashi states that the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED means NEAR.
Thus Rashi translates the verse: PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING
NEAR THE NILE. Is this the real meaning of AYIN-LAMED? Can
other examples be produced.

ANSWER
------
The Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED which is usually translated as
ON in fact has half a dozen meanings in addition to the special
idiomatic meanings it has with other words. Here are some
examples: AYIN-LAMED can mean a) ON, b) WITH, c) AT THE TIME OF
d) TOWARDS, e) FOR, f) NEAR, g) BESIDES. Furthermore in
conjunction with other words it can have idiomatic meaning--for
example it can mean a) DEPRESSED, b) THEREFORE or SINCE.

COMMENTS
*1 There are about 6 dozen Rashis on AYIN-LAMED. We shall
spend about 10 issues presenting all these Rashis. We
therefore start out simply today with verses where
AYIN LAMED means ON. This list will then grow over
the next 10 issues
LIST004a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

We present verses with the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED
AYIN-LAMED has 7 basic meanings and several idiomatic meanings
Today we start simply with verses where AYIN-LAMED means ON
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE WITH AYIN-LAMED TRANSLATED AS ON
Ex26-07b They will be a tent ON the mishkan*1
Ex40-22a Placed it ON the right side*2
Ex29-12a Place blood ON horns rest<-->rest SPILLED on bottom*3
COMMENTS
*1 Both the TENT and MISHKAN were made of animal skins.
Thus the verse text, PLACE THE TENT ON THE MISHKAN means
PLACE THE ANIMAL SKINS OF THE tent ON THE ANIMAL SKINS
OF THE MISHKAN. Hence, in this verse the word AL means ON

*2 ON here refers to ON the SPACE (Right side of the temple)
ON however usually refers to being on an object

*3 Rashi emphasizes that AYIN-LAMED is literal in this verse.
PLACE THE BLOOD ON THE ALTAR HORNS (Rashis point is
that AL does not mean NEAR here---e.g. PLACE THE BLOOD
NEAR THE ALTAR HORNS).

Rashi learns that AYIN-LAMED is literal here from the
alignment of the 2 verse halves
-- PLACE THE BLOOD on THE ALTAR HORNS
-- spill THE REST OF THE BLOOD AT THE ALTAR FOUNDATION
This contrast emphasizes that the blood is placed
HIGH on the ALTAR horns (while the rest is spilled out)
