RE: What does SHORT SPIRITED means (K-Tz-R R-aCh)
COMMENTS
QUESTION
--------
The Rashi, Ex06-09b makes 3 suggestions on the meaning
of the phrase Kuph-Tzade-Resh Resh-Vuv-Chet (KTzR RuaCh)
These 3 suggestions are listed below.

What is the underlying controversy in these 3 suggestions

---------------- SUMMARY OF RASHI ------------------

SUGGESTION 1 KTzR Ruach means SNAPPY/IRRITABLE/..
------------
Thus Ex06-09 should be translated as
- The Jews didnt listen to Moses because of
their SNAPPY & IRRITABLE state

SUGGESTION 2 Ktzr Ruach related to Tetragrammaton
------------
The Tetragrammaton is Gods attribute of mercy
What does that have to do with Ex06-09?

SUGGESTION 3 Ktzr Ruach means Prophetic inpatience
------------
Recall that God gave Pharoh 10 chances. Moses, as
a prophet was suppose to be patient (maybe Pharoh
would repent). However Moses wanted immediate
salvation--Moses was prophetically inpatient.
-------------------------------------------------

Thanks

Bracha

ANSWER
------
SUGGESTION 1 KtzR Ruach means SNAPPY/IRRITABLE/...
------------
Thus Ex06-09 should be translated as
- The Jews didnt listen to Moses because of
their SNAPPY & IRRITABLE state

SUGGESTION 2 Ktzr Ruach related to Tetragrammaton
------------
The Tetragrammaton is Gods attribute of mercy
What does that have to do with Ex06-09

Here, Rashi supplements his first suggestion.
The Tetragrammaton denotes Gods capacity for Mercy.
In fact God did NOT destroy Egypt immediately.
Rather He gave Pharoh 10 chances. This required
patience on the Jews part. However the Jews
were snappy and irritable (KTzR RUACH) and hence
didnt have the patience to let God give Pharoh
a chance

SUGGESTION 3 Ktzr Ruach means Prophetic inpatience
------------
Rashi cites the Talmudic explanation: KTZR RUACH
means SHORT (PROPHETIC) SPIRIT. As just indicated
God gave Pharoh 10 chances. The proper prophetic way
is not to demand IMMEDIATE salvation but rather
to be patient. However Moses and the people were
impetuous. At the end of Ex05 Moses complains
- WHY HAVENT YOU REDEEMED THEM YET GOD. Rashi
points out how Moses was not on the level of the
Patriarchs in being able to wait for a prophetic
fulfillment.

We make 2 points about the Talmudic explanation

POINT 1
-------
Suggestion 3 differs from Suggestion 1. Suggestion
1 looks at KOTZER RUACH as meaning SNAPPY &
IRRITABLE. By CONTRAST Suggestion 3 looks at
KOTZER RUACH as meaning LACKING PROPHETIC PATIENCE
There is no point here about personality SNAPPINESS

That is the difference between the two meanings

POINT 2
-------
I have frequently said that Rashi was King of the
Database. In fact there is a sister idiom in Hebrew,
KOTZER NEFESH which DOES mean SNAPPINESS.

Please see http://www.RashiYomi.com/gn09-04a.htm
which gives 2 dozen Rashis on NEFESH. Several
examples of KOTZER NEFESH are presented. Rashi
explicitly explains on Nu21-04c that KOTZER NEFESH
means snappiness and irritability

So we now see Rashis brilliance.

Rashis first explanation is that KOTZER RUACH
and KOTZER NEFESH are synonyms--they both
mean IMPETUOUSNESS.

But the true explanation is given in Rashis
2nd explanation where Rashi distinguishes
between KOTZER RUACH and KOTZER NEFESH.

Rashi is Simple: 2 idioms and hence 2 meanings
-- KOTZER NEFESH means SNAPPY/IRRITABLE
-- KOTZER RUACH means PROPHETICALLY UNPATIENT

In other words the reason Chazal saw a different
meaning in KOTZER RUACH is because it uses
different words from KOTZER NEFESH.

And there is novelty here---not ONLY was Moses
prophetically impatient but so were the Jews.

Praise be Him who chose them and their learning!

QUESTION
--------
Ex01-05a states that PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING ON THE NILE
But Rashi states that the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED means NEAR.
Thus Rashi translates the verse: PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING
NEAR THE NILE. Is this the real meaning of AYIN-LAMED? Can
other examples be produced.

ANSWER
------
The Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED which is usually translated as
ON in fact has half a dozen meanings in addition to the special
idiomatic meanings it has with other words. Here are some
examples: AYIN-LAMED can mean a) ON, b) WITH, c) AT THE TIME OF
d) TOWARDS, e) FOR, f) NEAR, g) BESIDES. Furthermore in
conjunction with other words it can have idiomatic meaning--for
example it can mean a) DEPRESSED, b) THEREFORE or SINCE.

A list of verses Where AYIN-LAMED-means WITH,BY *1
COMMENTS
*1 There are about 6 dozen Rashis on AYIN-LAMED. We shall
spend about 10 issues presenting all these Rashis.
This list will then grow over the next 10 issues
Today we show verses where AYIN LAMED can function like
the Hebrew prefix BETH and mean WITH, BY, AT THE SAME TIME
LIST004d
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-04

We present verses with the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED
AYIN-LAMED has 7 basic meanings and several idiomatic meanings

In LIST004a we reviewed verses where AYIN LAMED means ON
In todays list we review verses
where AYIN LAMED means the same as the prefix letter BETH
Hence AYIN LAMED can mean BY, AT THE TIME, or WITH
VERSE TEXT OF VERSE:AYIN-LAMED MEANS with,on,time of
Ex35-22a The men came WITH the women
Ex29-17a Offer the sacrifice WITH its cut up parts
Ex12-09e Cook it,its head WITH its calves (The way it is)
Ex28-11c engrave the stones WITH the names of the tribes
-------- --------------------------------------------------
Lv19-26b ...dont eat at the TIME OF BLOOD (Flow)*1
Ex23-18a Dont slaughter the sacrifice AT THE TIME of leaven
-------- --------------------------------------------------
Ex17-16b Gods hand (Swore) BY his Throne
Gn27-40b Live BY your sword*2
Ex06-26b God took the Jews out BY Their social structure
-------- --------------------------------------------------
Lv03-04c take the Finger WITH the liver*3
Ex29-13a take Finger WITH the liver*3
-------- --------------------------------------------------
COMMENTS
*1 Wait till all blood out (It is prohibited to eat
a ritually slaughtered animal till all blood is out)

*2 cf Ez33-26 You stood(Depended ON) BY your swords

*3 Actually there are 3 words CONNECTING finger with liver
-----------------------------
Ex29-22 Finger OF the liver
Lv03-04 Finger WITH the liver
Lv09-10 Finger FROM the liver
-----------------------------
These words are scattered over 11 verses
See http://www.RashiYomi.com/lv08-16a.htm

From these 3 CONNECTIVE words we learn how the FINGER
of the LIVER is taken for the sacrifices
- We take the FINGER (OF the liver)
- WITH a LITTLE bit of the liver (Where liver/finger meet)
- But it is the finger FROM the liver
(So we take only a little bit)

EXAMPLE 1:(Ex12-09c) COOK COOK it in water (So COOKED is bold)
INFERENCE: Prefered to COOK it in water;
But COOK It at all costs(Even if you dont have water)
* BULLETS: Bible indicates bullets by REPEATING KEYWORDS
--------------------------------------------------------
Who am I
- THAT I should go to Pharaoh
- THAT I should take the Jews out of Egypt (Ex03-11a)
--------------------------------------------------------
RASHI: Repeated word THAT creates BULLET effect
- Pharoh was a difficult king (Bullet one)
- Jews were not yet ready for freedom (Bullet two)
* FOOTNOTES: The Bible indicates FOOTNOTES by ALMOST DUPLICATING
verses but making small minor changes
http://www.RashiYomi.Com/align-58.htm
---------------------------------------------------------------
EXAMPLE: Ex20-03a
VERSE PHRASE #1 PHRASE #2 PHRASE #3
------- --------- --------- ------------------
Ex20-03 Dont POSSESS the gods of others
