QUESTION -------- Ex01-05a states that PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING ON THE NILE But Rashi states that the Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED means NEAR. Thus Rashi translates the verse: PHAROHS DAUGHTER WAS WALKING NEAR THE NILE. Is this the real meaning of AYIN-LAMED? Can other examples be produced. ANSWER ------ The Hebrew word AYIN-LAMED which is usually translated as ON in fact has half a dozen meanings in addition to the special idiomatic meanings it has with other words. Here are some examples: AYIN-LAMED can mean a) ON, b) WITH, c) AT THE TIME OF d) TOWARDS, e) FOR, f) NEAR, g) BESIDES. Furthermore in conjunction with other words it can have idiomatic meaning--for example it can mean a) DEPRESSED, b) THEREFORE or SINCE.

1 Here the word BESIDES has a nuance of AFTER (that is the OLAH goes FIRST and the other sacrifices are ON IT--AFTERWARDS and SECOND) In fact Rashi on Lv08-28b explicitly uses the nuance AFTER (that is he translates AYIN LAMED as AFTER while in the other Rashis he translates AYIN LAMED as BESIDES) 2 Recall Will Shulman-s(http://www.RashiYomi.com/h16n14.htm) explanation that army gear is worn ON an army belt. Hence, AYIN LAMED also means ON in this verse ----------------------------------- (also) have a digging spade ON your army-belt-with-utensils ----------------------------------- Rashi in fact frequently echoes the theme that AYIN LAMED means NEAR, BESIDES, WITH, FOR, etc and also simultaneously means ON

ANSWER ------ Ira The Talmud relates how their was a certain student that required that lessons be repeated to him 400 times before he understood them (His teacher was considered a saint). Well...we have 16 volumes of Rashi is Simple each with 25 issues. So we have 400 lessons. And after these 400 lessons Ira finally noticed that the phrase FIX WIDTH should be spelled FIXED WIDTH(This has been corrected this issue0 I hope by the 32nd volume, issue 800, Ira will be blessed with good knowledge of the 30 principles of Rashi and their application.
