VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi had 6 main methods. Besides alerting readers to INTERNAL interpretations (meaning and grammar) Rashi also alerted us to EXTERNALLY BASED interpretations where OTHER VERSES illumine present verses. Ex25-02:03 speaks about VOLUNTARY DONATIONS of silver; by contrast Ex30-11:16 speaks about REQUIRED TAXES of silver. Which is it? Is the silver VOLUNTARY or REQUIRED. The is resolved by Ex39-25:28 which explains that the TAXED silver was used for the silver hooks and silver supports for the beams. The VOLUNTARY silver DONATIONS was used for making the utensils such as the bowls and spoons (eg Nu07-13) | ||

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way a dictionary does. Rashi explains word meanings thru a variety of vehicles as shown below EXAMPLE 1 --------- The word BAD means FLAX. Rashi infers this by comparing several verses speaking about specific priestly garments which we are told are made of PISTIM, BAD, SHAYSH. Hence we infer that these 3 words all mean the same thing EXAMPLE 2 --------- BAD has a unifying meaning of something ISOLATED Hence it can refer to FABRICATIONS, FLAX (Which grows isolated), BOUGHS of a tree or items that look like BOUGHS (limbs and boards) EXAMPLE 3 --------- TZLAH has a unifying meaning of SIDE. Hence it can refer to LIMPING on ones side or to WALL BOARDS (Which are placed on the side). It never means RIB!*10 | ||

All 4 verses below speak about making PRIESTLY HATS and PANTS. The material used is identified with 3 terms - BAD - PISTHIM - SHAYTH This shows that these 3 terms all mean the same thing (FLAX) | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | |
Ez44-18 | Use PISHTIM(Flax)for Priest HATS & PANTS | |
Ex28-42 | Use BD for PRIEST PANTS | |
Ex28-39 | Use SHAYTH for PRIEST HATS | |
Ex39-28 | Use BD/SHAYTH for PRIEST HATS & PANTS | |
Ex39-28 | Use BD/SHAYTH for PRIEST HATS & PANTS |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
The Root BD means ISOLATED. BD has 3 distinct meanings illustrated in the LIST below. All meanings relate to ISOLATION*1 | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE (Meaning of BD Capped) | |
Lv06-03a | Make FLAXen pants | |
Isa44-25 | Who destroys the signs of FABRICATORS | |
Ez17-06 | This tree made distinguished BOUGHS | |
Ex25-13 | Make cedar-BOARD handles | |
Job18-13 | the BONES of his skin will be consumed | |
|
||
*1 - So the FLAX plant grows ISOLATED - FABRICATIONS are ISOLATED thoughts - BOUGHS are ISOLATED (Separate parts of ) trees (Limbs and boards look like BOUGHS) |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
A list of verses illustrating the various meanings of TZLAH. The unifying meaning is SIDE. Hence TZLAH can mean SIDE, LIMPING ON ONES SIDE or WALL BOARDS (Place on the side of a building). TZLAH never means RIB. | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE: Meaning of Tzlh CAPPED | |
Gn32-32 | He was SIDING (Limping) on his thingh | |
Ps35-15 | When I SIDED they rejoiced | |
------- | ----------------------------------------- | |
Ex26-20 | On the second SIDE of the temple | |
------- | ----------------------------------------- | |
1K06-15 | He built the house with Cedar BOARDS | |
Gn02-21 | ONE SIDE of Adam was made into Eve*1 | |
|
||
*1 A supporting OTHER VERSE is Gn05-01 - He made HIM(Adam) in the image of God - MALE & FEMALE he created THEM SO man was a double creature. At the creation of woman the FEMALE side of man was separated out and became woman The word TZALAH NEVER means Rib. It always means SIDE |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main tasks is to explain GRAMMAR the same way Hebrew Grammar books do. In this posting Rashi explains the difference between the PASSIVE and PARTICIPLE. The PARTICIPLE is used to denote an INTRINSIC attribute while the PASSIVE is used to denote a MAN MADE attribute. Here are some examples EXAMPLE 1 --------- Participle RED means ALWAYS RED Passive RED means DYED RED EXAMPLE 2 --------- Particple APPOINTED means INTRINSIC (Eg Tribal rights) Passive APPOINTED means JOB APPOINTED (man made) | ||

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | |||||
A list of verses and word pairs showing the difference between the PARTICIPLE and PASSIVE. Participles are natural while passive are man made | |||||
VERSE | HEBREW | PARTICIPLE? | MEANING | NATURAL? | |
Nu19-02 | Adumah | Participle | Red cow | Natural | |
Ex25-05 | MeADAM | Passive | Dyed | Man made | |
------- | ------- | ------------ | --------- | ---------- | |
Zc06-02 | Adumim | Participle | Red hrse | Natural | |
Na02-04 | MeAdam | Passive | Shields | Mad Made*1 | |
------- | ------- | ------------ | --------- | ---------- | |
2K12-12 | MfKad | Passive | Appointed | Mad made | |
Nu26-54 | Pekuday | Participle | Tribal | Natural*2 | |
|
|||||
*1 I think the verse, REDDENED SHIELDS refers to the fact that these warriors were so great that their shields looked dyed red from all the bloodshed *2 So counting conscriptions for the army was done by tribal birth (Every tribe contributed so many soldiers). These were NATURAL appointments. By contrast 2K12-12 talks about professional appointments to the temple |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi has 6 main methods of interpretation. Some of these methods are INTERNAL--such as word meanings and grammar. By contrast other methods are external. Rashi illumines a verses meaning using cross references to other verses. A particularly interesting example are cross references involving the tabernacle The Tabernacle construction is mentioned in 3 places - Ex25 thru Ex27 The order to make a Temple - Ex28 - Ex29 Moses assignment of tasks - Ex35 - Ex40 The carrying out of the tasks Hence cross references from these 3 sources illumine each other. There are many Rashis that fit into this paradigm. | ||
