VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain word meanings the same way a dictionary does. In this posting we examine how Rashi infers the meaning of RARE words. Here are half a dozen examples. Rashi either infers meaning from CONTEXT or from CONTEXT AND FORM. EXAMPLE 1 --------- LOL means WINDING STAIRCASE & because of the form also means CURTAIN HOOK EXAMPLE 2 --------- KRS means DOUBLE OVER and because of the form also means CURTAIN HOOK EXAMPLE 3 --------- SLV means STEP and because of the form also means LOOKING LIKE A STEP (Carved out) EXAMPLE 4 --------- KBL means TO RECEIVE and because of the form of a receiver can mean ALIGNED EXAMPLE 5 --------- ISH EL ACHIV means A PERSON TO HIS BROTHER and because of the FORM can mean ONE TO ANOTHER. Similarly ONE TO ANOTHER can mean ALIGNED EXAMPLE 6 --------- There are 3 words for FLAX -- PISTIM=FLAX what it is made of -- BAD = BRANCH LIKE because of its sturdiness -- SIX because FLAX cord is normally 6 ply Hence from context SIX MSZR means SIX PLY | ||

All 4 verses below speak about making PRIESTLY HATS and PANTS. The material used is identified with 3 terms - BAD - PISTHIM - SHAYTH This shows that these 3 terms all mean the same thing (FLAX) See LIST802c for an explanation of each of the particular names | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | |
Ez44-18 | Use PISHTIM(Flax)for Priest HATS & PANTS | |
Ex28-42 | Use BD for PRIEST PANTS | |
Ex28-39 | Use SHAYTH for PRIEST HATS | |
Ex39-28 | Use BD/SHAYTH for PRIEST HATS & PANTS | |
Ex39-28 | Use BD/SHAYTH for PRIEST HATS & PANTS |

The Root BD means ISOLATED. BD has 3 distinct meanings illustrated in the LIST below. All meanings relate to ISOLATION*1 | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE (Meaning of BD Capped) | |
Lv06-03a | Make FLAXen pants *2 | |
Isa44-25 | Who destroys the signs of FABRICATORS | |
Ez17-06 | This tree made distinguished BOUGHS | |
Ex25-13 | Make cedar-BOARD handles | |
Job18-13 | the BONES of his skin will be consumed | |
|
||
*1 - FABRICATIONS are ISOLATED thoughts - BOUGHS are ISOLATED (Separate parts of ) trees (LIMBS and BOARDS look liek BOUGHS) - The FLAX plant is sturdy and BOUGH/LIMB like *2 The FLAX plant is sturdy. So it is BOUGH or LIMB like. Hence when making cords it can be used as a base. Unlike WOOL (which is very pliable) | ||
|
||
*10 Version 2 of this table |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | |||
We present the 3 roots meaning flax(LIST802a) We show how each root refers to one aspect of FLAX *10 | |||
ROOT | MEANING | RELATIONSHIP TO FLAX | |
PSTIM | FLAX | Primary meaning | |
BD | BOUGH | FLAX is BRANCH LIKE (Sturdy) | |
SHAYSH | 6 | FLAX cord is 6 PLY*1 | |
|
|||
*1 If you look at any cord you will see it is not ONE cord but rather several threads twisted together. The number of thread twists determines the PLY of the cord. Thus thick cord may be 24 ply while thin cord is 6 ply Hence we infer the meaning of the rare root S-Z-R from context. SIX S-Z-R means 6-PLY.*11 | |||
|
|||
*10 We can also perceive this as using the method of Rabbi Ishmael--resolution of contradictory verses. One of the 5 methods we have advocated is the resolution of verses with contradictory etymologies. You can find examples at http://www.RashiYomi.com/ri-14.htm *11 Rashi goes a step further: 6 ply with PURPLE, RED and CRIMSON would be a 24 ply cord each of whose 6 threads is made of a 4 ply cord of FLAX,PURPLE,RED,CRIMSON. This is simply a reasonable interpretation of the verse. It appears that FLAX, because of its sturdiness was used as a base in cords since it keeps the other threads together. |

We present 6 words which occur very rarely in the Bible. In each case we infer meaning using the principles of - CONTEXT - FORM - POSSIBLE OTHER RARE OCCURENCES OF THIS ROOT The main point of this list is an emphasis on FORM. See the footnotes for further clarification | |||||
VERSE | ROOT | MEANING | VERSE | MEANING | |
Ex26-01a | SZR | Ply of cord*1 | NA | ||
-------- | ---- | ------------- | ------- | ---------------- | |
Ex26-04a | LOL | Curtain hook | 1K06-08 | Spiral Stairs*2 | |
Ex26-06a | KRS | Curtain hook | Is46-01 | Double over*3 | |
-------- | ---- | ------------- | ------- | ---------------- | |
Ex26-05a | KBL | Aligned | Ez08-30 | To receive*4 | |
Ex26-17c | ... | Aligned | Ex26-03b | 1 to another*5 | |
-------- | ---- | ------------- | -------- | ---------------- | |
Ex26-17b | SLV | STEP-like | 1K07-29 | Steps*6 | |
|
|||||
*1 See LIST802c for a justification *2 HOOKS look like SPIRALS *3 HOOKS look DOUBLED OVER *4 ALIGNED ITEMS are in GIVER-RECEIVER form *5 ONE TO ANOTHER has an ALIGNED FORM *6 The Boards had handles which fit into bases the way ladder steps fit into the side(So the board handles LOOKED LIKE steps) |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
The Hebrew phrase, ISH EL ACHIV, literally means a PERSON TO HIS BROTHER (eg Gn37-19) However this has the FORM of ONE TO ANOTHER. Hence this phrase acquires a NEW IDIOMATIC MEANING:It can mean ONE TO ANOTHER in any context (eg the hooks were ALIGNED ONE TO ANOTHER)*10 | ||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE: ISH EL ACHIV means ONE TO ANOTHER | |
Ex25-20 | Keruvim face ONE ANOTHER | |
Ex26-02 | sewed ONE TO ANOTHER | |
Gn37-19 | they said ONE TO ANOTHER:here is the dreamer | |
Ex03-13 | the voices of the angels harmonize ONE TO ANOTHER | |
2K07-06 | they said ONE TO ANOTHER:the Jews hired soldiers | |
|
||
*10 Hence technically this belongs to our NEW MEANING-- IDIOM Series. |
