VERSE: Ex28-13a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi has 6 main methods of interpretation. Some of these methods are INTERNAL--such as word meanings and grammar. By contrast other methods are external. Rashi illumines a verses meaning using cross references to other verses. A particularly interesting example are cross references involving the tabernacle The Tabernacle construction is mentioned in 3 places - Ex25 thru Ex27 The order to make a Temple - Ex28 - Ex29 Moses assignment of tasks - Ex35 - Ex40 The carrying out of the tasks Hence cross references from these 3 sources illumine each other. There are many Rashis that fit into this paradigm.

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ TO BORDER means to make a Border. In general (as shown in the lists below) every noun (object) can denote a verb (activity). There are 3 primary ways a noun (object) can become a verb(activity) -- You can REMOVE the object (eg to DUST) -- You can CREATE the object (eg to FLOWER) -- You can USE the object (eg to HAMMAR) EXAMPLE: Ex19-12a BORDER the nation from the hill EXAMPLE: Ex16-20b TO WORM to make worms EXAMPLE: Nu04-13b DUST the ashes from the altar EXAMPLE: Ex28-39a EMBROIDER the pants

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain grammar the same way grammar textbooks explain grammar. An important component of grammar are the rules governing PARAGRAPH STYLE. Modern typing indicates paragraph style by using such items as indentation, bold etc. The Bible indicates paragraph style by skillfully using contrasting keywords. Ex28 speaks about the topic: THE PRIESTLY GARMENTS Certain verses begin AARON & HIS CHILDREN while other verses begin AARON or CHILDREN. These introductory keywords create an indentation effect. We infer from the subparagraphs that Aaron has 8 garments - Breastplate(Choshen) Suit (Ayfod) - Overcoat (Meil) Embroidered Shirt (Cutonet) - Hat (Mitznefet/Migbaat) Belt(Avnayt) - Pants (Michnathayim) Head-Mask (Tzizth) His children only wear 4 garments - Embroidered Shirt (Cutonet) - Hat (Mitznefet/Migbaat) Belt(Avnayt) - Pants (Michnathayim)
