VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main techniques is to use Cross references. These cross referenced verses illumine the meaning of the original verses. There are 5 techniques of cross referencing. EXAMPLE Ex30-12b ---------------- Ex30-12b states that the half-dollar tax atones: This is illumined by 2S24-01:25 which states that King David and all of Israel were punished for the census taken(Showing that direct census is a sin*1) EXAMPLE Ex30-13e ---------------- Ex30-13e speaks about the SHEKEL currency equalling 20 GAYRAH. This is illumined by 1S02-36 which shows the GAYRAH was a unit of currency Ex30-16b -------- Ex30-16b states that the half-dollar tax was used for the TEMPLE service. This is illumined by Ex38-26:28 which shows, more specifically, that this silver was used for the silver sockets and curtain hooks. Ex30-18d -------- Ex30-18 orders that the Priestly washbin be placed between the ALTAR and the TEMPLE. This is illumined by Ex40-27:29 which shows that of the two altars--the Golden altar was placed INSIDE the Temple while it was the COPPER ALTAR that was placed OUTSIDE the Temple before the door. Hence the WASHBIN was placed between the Temple and the COPPER altar*2.

*1 The traditional explanation is that since God sends blessings in uncounted things, therefore if we count avoid Gods blessings. *2 There are two points made by Rashi on this verse The other point deals with the meaning of the word INBETWEEN. Rashi interprets this word broadly vs literally(Not exactly inbetween but in the general horizontal line of inbetweeness). We will have opportunity to discuss this in another posting |

We present a list of verses where further details of the verse are presented from other verses. The classical example is the Passover Hagaddah example: The verse Dt26-05d, ONLY A FEW JEWS WENT DOWN TO EGYPT, is illumined by Gn46-27 which states that 70 PEOPLE WENT DOWN TO EGYPT. Thus the technique of OTHER VERSES teaches us that A FEW JEWS(Dt26-05d) means 70(Gn46-27)

We present a list of verses where the meaning of words in one verse are illumined by the usage of these words in other verses. The classical example is the word CALF which occurs several times in the Torah(eg Gn15-09). We know a CALF is a YOUNG OX/BULL but we dont know HOW YOUNG. The details are gives by Lv09-07d which shows that CALFS are 1 year (And this derivation is accepted legally)
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | OTHER VRSE | MEANING
Dt01-19a | GREAT & AWESOME desert | Dt08-15 | with snakes
Ex13-20a | SUCCOTH*1 | Nu33-05 | RMSYTH->SCCTH
Gn15-09 | CALF | Lv09-07d | 1 year old
Ex21-17b | HIS BLOOD ON HIM | Lv20-27 | StoneTo Death

Ex30-13e | GAYRAH | 1S02-36 | CURRENCY UNIT
Ex30-18d | Washpan near ALTAR | Ex40-27:29 | COPPER ALTAR

*1 Ex13-20 Jews journeyed from Succoth after Exodus Ex12-27 Exodus: Jews go from Raamsayth to Succoth Nu33-05 Exodus, Then Raamsayth, THen Succoth The point is that Nu33-05 makes it clear that there were 3 places - Exodus FROM Egypt - TO Raamsayth - TO Succoth. Ex13-20 only mentions 2 of the places Ex12-27 makes it sound like they left EGYPT, ie they left RAAMSAYTH. It is in fact common for places to have multiple names. So Nu33-05 illumines that there were 3 distinct places |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main methods is the interpretation of special Biblical queues as indicating such modern typing methods as bullets, bolds, paragraphing etc. The Biblical Author did not use BULLETS. Instead when a bullet effect is to be created, the Bible repeats a keyword. EXAMPLE: Ex30-23 ----------------- Thus Ex30-23 exhibits the following contrast -- KINMAN is brought in HALF UNITS of 250 -- KNEY-- is brought in ---- UNITS OF 250 This blatant contrast suggests that 250 units of KNEY are brought while 500 units of KINMAN are brought.*1 *2 EXAMPLE: Ex30-20:21 ------------------- The bullets create a repetition effect and emphasize two stanzas thus indicating two separate capital crimes -- when they come to the temple they wash or die -- when they come to the altar they wash or die*3 Thus a priest who EITHER comes into the temple or who serves on the altar without washing is liable to death at the hands of heaven.

*1 We could also classify this using the ALIGNMENT METHOD (TWO CASES). In reality all 2 case alignments are examples of BULLETING. The contrast created by the bullets implies two cases *2 The Talmud FURTHER explains why KINMAN is brought in half units (Rather than whole units). (Roughly, more precision is achieved when weighing two halves) *3 It would be punchier if EACH BULLET corresponded to ONE VERSE. However, the second bullet is broken up over 2 verses Thus this example could belong to our multi-verse sentence series. |

We exhibit the bullet structure of Ex30-23 showing two methods of bringing perfume The contrast implies that the total KINMAN brought is 500
PERFUME TYPE | UNITS USED | AMOUNG PER UNIT
KINMAN BOSEM | HALF UNITS | 250
KNEY BOSEM | 250 |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
We exhibit the bullet structure of Ex30-20:21 This bullet structure clearly emphasizes 2 capital crimes
PRIEST ACTIVITY | REQUIREMENT*2
When they ENTER the temple | Wash
When they SERVE on the altar | Wash *1
|
||
*1 As mentioned above, this bulleted structure would be clearer if verses 20 and 21 were combined *2 If this requirement is not met there is a death penalty at the hands of heaven. |
