*1 The postings in this digest offer insights into how - How Rashi uses LISTS to COMPARE - How Rashi comments on CROSS REFERENCING - How Rashi comments on CONSECUTIVE PARAGRAPHS - A Splendid Rashi-Radack Controversy on WORD MEANING Thus these postings provide good examples of the Rashi-is-Simple methodology. *2 This isnt Rashis main theme. But do you know how Kasporov beat a computer? Some themes on complex analysis are inferred from the Bible (These themes apply to both Talmud and chess) |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi frequently used Database methods. Sometimes this is simple---Rashi reviews a database query and notes that there are a handful of exceptions. Rashi then explains or comments on these exceptions. EXAMPLE Lv10-03b ---------------- Todays example is typical. 6 dozen Biblical chapters begin -- AND GOD SPOKE TO moses TO SAY. In 11 Biblical chapters we have -- GOD SPOKE TO moses and aaron TO SAY But in only 2 Biblical chapters we have -- GOD SPOKE TO aaron TO SAY Thus the phrase GOD SPOKE to aaron TO SAY is rare! Rashi comments on this Rarity. In one case it was the chapter on Priestly gifts (and hence it was told to Aaron). In the other case it was the chapter on avoiding drinking wine while serving in the temple which caused the death of his two sons-- Aaron accepted Gods judgements on his sons and hence merited to receive this chapter.

*10 There is a long Malbim on the Sifray at Lv01-01 where the Malbim goes into depth on the Divine commands to MOSES vs AARON vs MOSES & AARON. Suffice it to say that this Rashi takes a simpler approach at explaining the anomalies. Also...Rashi never addresses the 11 verses with God speaks to MOSES AND AARON |

*1 This chapter deals with the prohibition of drinking wine which caused the downfall and deaths of Aarons 2 children For further details on why God directly told this to Aaron see LIST603c *2 This chapter deals with the priestly gifts. Hence it was spoken directly to Aaron |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
Lv10-08:11 gives the prohibition of Priests serving the temple while drunk. Since drunkedness caused the death of Aarons two children it was befitting that God directly told him how to avoid such deaths in the future. Rashi further observes that Aaron accepted Gods decision to kill his two sons--a list of supporting phrases to this acceptance is given below. This acceptance of Gods will was a contributing factor in Aaron receiving this commandment
PHRASE/Act | Act of Aaron mentioned showing acceptance*10
LV10-03 | Aaron silent on news of death
Lv10-19 | Aaron abstains from eating sacs during death
Lv10-06 | Aaron observes mourning on sons death
|
||
| ||
|
||
*10 We take this opportunity to discuss methodology Rashi actually states that --------------------------------------- AARON WAS silent WHEN MOSES TOLD HIM THAT GOD SANCTIFIES HIMSELF THRU THE DEATH OF HIS CLOSE ONES. HENCE BEcAUSE OF THIS silence HE MERITED THAT THE CHAPTER PROHIBITING WINE WAS STATED TO HIM --------------------------------------- By contrast we have stated --------------------------------------- THERE ARE TWO CHAPTERS WHERE GOD SPOKE TO AARON. BOTH THESE CHAPTERS DEAL WITH priestly matters--ONE DEALS WITH PRIESTLY GIFTS WHILE ONE DEALS WITH PRIESTLY RESPONSIBILITIES (TO ABSTAIN FROM WINE DURING SERVICE). HENCE THESE CHAPTERS were stated exclusively to Aaron -------------------------------------- Notice how our explanation deals with the ENTIRE LIST. This is a deeper approach to the Biblical text. Nevertheless Rashi adds an important point ------------------------------------------ Aaron was a serious religious person He was interested in Gods commands Hence he could be TRUSTED with the responsibility of telling people to abstain from wine during service since it might lead to their deaths. ------------------------------------------ Rashi proves Aarons seriousness by noting -------------------------------------------- that when Moses told him that God sanctifies himself thru the death of righteous people Aaron was silent (And accepted) -------------------------------------------- By contrast we have presented a ------------------------------------------ list of 3 items showing that Aaron was serious and religious ------------------------------------------ Our approach is deeper and richer But our approach does no CONTRADICT Rashi. Rather we regard Rashi as giving ONE EXAMPLE Therefore proper Rashi study suggests adding more examples. I think this way of taking Rashi study is exemplary. |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main techniques is to use Cross references. These cross referenced verses illumine the meaning of the original verses. There are 5 techniques of cross referencing. EXAMPLE: Lv10-04a -------------------------- Lv10-04a states that Uziel was Aarons uncle. This cross references Ex06-16:25 where the genealogies of Levi are stated for several generations.

We present a list of verses where further details of the verse are presented from other verses. The classical example is the Passover Hagaddah example: The verse Dt26-05d, ONLY A FEW JEWS WENT DOWN TO EGYPT, is illumined by Gn46-27 which states that 70 PEOPLE WENT DOWN TO EGYPT. Thus the technique of OTHER VERSES teaches us that A FEW JEWS(Dt26-05d) means 70(Gn46-27)

*10 Recall that an issue in education is BREADTH vs DEPTH For example when studying Talmud is it preferable to - list many approaches to an issue (BREADTH) - go into the pros-cons on one approach (DEPTH) Similarly when analyzing a chess position - Do you FIRST study all possible responses - Or Do you FIRST study in depth one response The Bible in Ex06-16:25 had a similar problem - Do you FIRST list all children; 2nd all GRANDCHILDREN; 3rd all GREAT GRANDCHILDREN - Or do you FIRST list a whole genealogy down to the 5th generation followed by a whole a genealogy to another 4th-5th generations. These are all BREADTH vs DEPTH problems (Similar problems come up in computer science). The Bible in Ex06-16:25 used the BREADTH approach First all chilren are listed. Then each set of grandchildren etc. This list which the reader should check supports this. ------------------------------------ Verse Level of genealogy mentioned ------- ---------------------------- 16 1 17 2 18 2 19 2 20 3 21 3 22 3 23 4 24 4 25 5 ------------------------------------- The list has implications for teaching, playing chess, writing programs and learning Talmud In passing public comments were made when Kasporov beat the computer-- ------------------------------------------ the computer is good at depth analysis at seeing many 100,000s of moves father By contrast I used intuition (overview of possible responses). (This is the breadth approach). The use of intuition vs analysis (breadth vs depth) enabled me to beat the computer ----------------------------------------- And now you know...all this comes explicitly from the holy Torah. - Praise be Him who chose them and their learning - |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi had 6 main methods. Besides alerting readers to INTERNAL interpretations (meaning and grammar) Rashi also alerted us to EXTERNALLY BASED interpretations where OTHER VERSES illumine present verses. Lv10-02 states that Aarons children died of fire. But Lv10-05 mentions that their clothes were on them! Apparently the clothes did not burn. Rashi explains that FIRE is here given a broad meaning--the FIRE OF PROPHECY--that is the chidren died under prophetic decree by God The LIST below presents other examples of contradictions resolved by using BROAD vs LITERAL meanings.

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||||
A list of verse pairs which cotnradict each other The contradictions are resolved by endowing words with LITERAL vs BROAD meaning
VERSE-1 | VERSE-2 | WHY 2 | HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED
Dt15-17 | Lv25-10 | Meaning | Slaves work FOREVER=A LONG TIME=TILL JUBILEE
Lv07-09 | Lv07-10 | Meaning | The PRIEST=DIVSION OF PRIEST,gets sacrifice
Lv04-03 | Lv04-03 | Meaning | A Young ADULT Bullock = BEGINNING ADULTHOOD
Lv10-02 | Lv10-05 | MEANING | Died from FIRE=SPIRITUAL FIRE*1
|
||||
*1 Hence the fire did not burn their clothes The idea that the FIRES mentioned in Dt05 or Ex20 was the FIRE OF PROPHECY vs REAL FIRE is supported by many verses and themes (Dt05-21). There are other Biblical supports for this idea but this will suffice for now.*10
|
||||
*10 It does not detract from the greatness of the miracle of revelation that the FIRE means FIRE OF PROPHECY. For Judaism does not view Gods greatness in His ability to make a mountain smoke with Fire. Rather Judaism views Gods greatness in His ability to make people burn with Spiritual Prophecy |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain Grammar the same way modern textbooks do. One class of grammar rules deal with style--eg how paragraphs should be organized. Rashi knew 4 methods of connecting consecutive paragraphs - CAUSE - ENABLEMENT - CONTRAST - UNIFYING THEME EXAMPLE 1 Lv10-02a ------------------- -Lv10-01:07 deals with the death of Aarons sons -Lv10-08:11 prohibits serving-priests from wine Rashi sees these two chapters as connected by CAUSE---a priest who serves while drinking wine will end up violating Gods will and be subject to a death penalty EXAMPLE 2 Lv10-02a ------------------ Similarly for the 2 clauses in Lv10-01:02 - Aarons sons offered a non-commanded fire - Aarons sons died by fire from heaven Rashi sees these two chapters as connected by CAUSE---a priest who offers non-allowed sacrifices will get the death penalty at the hands of heaven *1 EXAMPLE 3 Lv10-03d ------------------ Lv10-03d states that the - Death of Righteous LEADS TO - Fear of God by masses Rashi explains the causal connection--the masses assume that if God punishes even the righteous this way how much more so will he punish ordinary people

*1 Rashi cites 2 opinions about the death of Aarons children - it was caused by wine - it was caused by non-allowed sacrifices My own opinion is that Rashi was not stating contrasting but rather complementary opinions That is - the sons of Aaron drank wine - and they got drunk - and they said it was ok to offer non-allowed sacrifices And this lead to their death at the hands of heaven. This approach---looking at 2 opinions as complementary vs conflicting is fundamental to proper study of Rashi |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | |||
The following list contains consecutive chapters related by cause(Either the 1st chapter causes the 2nd chapter or the 2nd chapter causes the 1st chapter) For further examples see the CP (Consecutive chapter) series at http://www.RashiYomi.com/calendar1.htm The Consecutive Chapter series was given in July 2000
VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER
Nu06-02a | Adulterous wife rite | Nazaarite from wine*1
Gn38-01a | Brothers sell Joseph | Judah leaves brothers*1
Gn23-03c | Abraham offers Isaac | Sarah dies*1
Gn02-20a | Adam Eve are Naked | Snake gives Eve Apple*2
Lv10-02a | Non-allowed sac | Death of Aarons sons*3
Lv10-02a | Death of Aarons sons | No wine to serving priest*3
Lv10-03d | Death of Righteous | God honored*4
|
|||
*1 Thus "whoever see the humiliating Adulterous wife rite" will be so shocked that he will abstain from wine Similarly "Judah advised his brothers to sell Joseph" and so when they regretted it they blaimed him and he had to "separate from them." Similarly "Sarah died" from the shock that "Abraham offered Isaac." *2 In other words because the snake saw Adam and Eve naked therefore he became Jealous and wanted Adam killed so he could marry Eve. ALthough this sounds a bit wild there is strong supporting evidence. Gn04-01 uses the past perfect form And Adam HAD BEEN FAMILIAR with his wife & they had a child" So the sequence of chapters is Adam was lonely" God makes Eve" Adam and Eve are naked" ------------------------"Snake tempts Eve" Adam has a child with Eve" Thus the sequence of chapters (Naked--->child) is clearly interrupted by the Snake story. *3 As explained above Rashi sees these two views as complementary - First they drank wine and got drunk - While drunk they thought it permissable to offer sacrifices which should not be offered Hence they died for both crimes *4 Rashi explains the Causal connection - when the masses see that God EVEN kills the righteous for sins - then they are aware how they must also observe Gods commandments - This leads to more honor for God |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way the dictionary does. A powerful dictionary method of Rashi is the UNIFIED MEANING METHOD. Here Rashi shows the disparate meanings of a root to be unified under a common umbrella. EXAMPLE ------- RADACK lists 3 main meanings to the root K-R-V - NEAR - INSIDE - WAR Rashi brilliantly provides further detail to the the meaning NEAR. NEAR can refer to - relatives - chosen/selected individuals Hence Lv10-03c means GOD SANCTIFIES HIMSELF THRU THOSE HE HAS CHOSEN.

Radack in his book roots lists 3 meanings of root K-R-V - NEAR (Relative, sacrifice) - INSIDE (intestine) - WAR Rashi provides further detail. KRV can mean - RELATIVE - CHOSEN/SELECTED Hence Rashi interprets Lv10-03c as ---------------------------------------------------------- - God sanctifies Himself thru the death of his CHOSEN ONES ---------------------------------------------------------- Also see footnote *1
VERSE | MEANING | Text of Verse with meaning of KRV capped
Ex14-20 | NEAR*1 | They did not get NEAR one another

|
|||
*1 Other meanings in the NEAR GROUP exist eg -- GOING TO COURT as in Ex22-07 -- ...THEY WILL APPROACH THE BENCH The relationship between NEAR and RELATIVE/CHOSEN/SACRIFICE should be obvious. Eg The sacrifice brings us near God *2 The INSIDE is NEAR the outside *3 In WAR the two parties GET NEAR and FIGHT |
