VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is the explanation of words the same way the dictionary explains words. Rashi had a variety of techniques to explain word meanings. In this issue we review 4 such techniques EXAMPLE 1a: Lv13-30b Meaning by Alignment --------------------------------------------------- Lv13 has half a dozen paragraphs dealing with leprosy. In many of these paragraphs the Hebrew word for leprosy is TzARAATH. But in the paragraph dealing with leprosy of the hair and beard (leprosy on skin that grows hair) the Hebrew word used is NETHEK. Using this alignment of TzARAATH and NETHEK we conclude that TzARAATH and NETHEK both refer to leprous spots depending on what part of the body the leprosy is growing EXAMPLE 1b: Lv13-18b Meaning by Alignment ------------------------------------------ Two chapters in Lv13 deal with Leprous scabs. One chapter deals with BURNS and one with WOUNDS Aligning the two chapters we find the following -- leprosy in...a wound that has HEALED -- leprosy in...the LIFE of the burn Thus the Torah is speaking about something that can be called both ALIVE and HEALED. This obviously refers to the SCAB...the LIVE tissue that develops when the wound or cut is HEALING EXAMPLE 1c: Lv13-30a Lv13-03a Meaning by Alignment --------------------------------------------------- Lv13 has half a dozen paragraphs dealing with leprosy. In several of these paragraphs we have the phrase --- THE HAIR turns WHITE However in one paragraph we have instead the phrase --- THE HAIR in THE LEPROUS SPOT IS BLONDE From this alignment of the lower capped words (..turns white... vs ...is blonde....) we derive the metaphoric meaning of TURN (Similar to English): To TURN white means -- the hair originally was some other color(eg black) -- but it presently is white We summarize this by saying THE HAIR TURNED WHITE. Since the metaphor exists in English also this is probably something obvious EXAMPLE 2: Lv13-19a New Idiomatic Meanings ------------------------------------------- Lv13-19 speaks about a REDDISH-WHITE leprosy spot. Although RED and WHITE have known meanings the phrase REDDISH-WHITE is a new coined term--it refers to a PINKISH color (WHITE with streaks of Red). EXAMPLE 3: Lv13-18a 2 Letter Theory ----------------------------------- The word ShCh means a PIT|DEPRESSION. Rashi had a principle that a TERMINAL NUN on a word can mean INTENSITY It follows that ShChN could refer to an INTENSE DEPRESSION or an INTENSE PIT---which, in turn, could refer to a blow that leaves (to use an English metaphor) a DEEP ABCESS. Hence SCHIN refers to a CUT or WOUND EXAMPLE 4: Lv12-04a SPECIAL METAPHOR CLASSES -------------------------------------------- Words of MOTION|CESSATION can refer metaphorically to ENERGY LEVELS OF PARTICIPATION. For example - to WALK with a cause=To participate; - to STAND against something=To strengthen it - to SIT firm = to oppose change Other examples are given below

A list of words showing that a TERMINAL NUN can denote INTENSITY The interpretation of the list should be clear. Eg The first row is read as follows: PAAMN means BELL CLAVER; while PAM (The first 3 letters of PAAMON) means to HAMMER. But a BELL CLAVER is an item that does ALOT OF HAMMERING---this can summarized in a punchy manner as follows: -- A BELL CLAVER does ALOT (NUN) OF HAMMERING
N-WORD | ENGLISH MEANING | = | NUN | REST OF WORD
PaaMN | (Bell Claver) | = | Alot of (N) | Hammering(PAAM);
GICHON | (Raging rapids) | = | Alot of (NUN) | Goring noise (NGCH);
PISHON | (the Nile) | = | Produces Alot(NUN) | of Flax(PS);
CHRN | (A person during FLOOD) | = | Intense(N) | Anger(CHR)
KoRBN | (Sacrifice) | = | Intense (Nun) | Closeness to God (KRV)
ShlChaN | (Table) | = | Alot (Nun) | left out(SHLACH) (on it)
ZiChRN | (Memorial) | = | Intense(Nun) | Memory (ZCR)
YERIVUN | (Fist Fight) | = | Intense(Nun) | Dispute (RV)
ScHiN | (Burn/cUt) | = | Intense(NUN) | Flattening(SCH) of skin |

- We provide a list of phrases such as ON THE FACE - In each case EACH WORD of the phrase---such as ON or THE or FACE--has clear meaning - However the words combined all together acquire a NEW MEANING--thus ON THE FACE means DURING THE LIFETIME
VERSE | PHRASE | NEW MEANING
Lv13-19a | Reddened White | White with streaks of Red
Gn11-28a | ON THE FACE | During the lifetime
Lv06-03b | DRESS ON SKIN | without undergrments
Ex21-21a | DAY or DAYS | 24 hours
Lv26-20e | SEVEN-FOLD | ALOT |

We show that words of MOTION such as - LIE (Absence of motion) - STAND - SIT - WALK correspond to ENERGY LEVELS such as - REMAIN - STRENGTHEN - PARTICIPATE - SICKNESS & LETHARGY
WORD | METAPHORIC | VERSE | Text of VERSE
SIT | STAY OVER | Dt01-46 | We STAYED OVER in Kadaysh
SIT | STAY OVER|REMAIN | Lv12-04a | She-ll REMAIN in her PURE state
STAND | STRONGLY ADHERE | 2K23-03 | They STRONGLY ADHERED to the convenant
WALK | PARTICIPATE | Ju04-08 | If you PARTICIPATE with me I will go
LIE | SICK | Ex21-18 | If he FALL SICK |

Alignment of Lv13-09:17 vs Lv13-18:23 shows that the phrases -- cut that was HEALED -- LIFE of cut align. They seem to refer to the SCAB of the cut
Lv13-09:17 | Lv13-18:23
Skin | Skin | |
CUT | BURN*1 | |
HEALED | LIFE OF CUT*2 | |
Priest will see it | Priest will see it
It is deep looking | It is deep looking
Its hair turned white | Its hair turned white
it is leprous | it is leprous
declare it unclean | declare it unclean
|
||
*1 So one chapter deals with CUTS while the other deals with BURNS *2 CUT HEALED=LIFE OF CUT This seems to refer to the SCAB. Thus these two chapters are speaking about LEPROSY IN SCABS |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||||
Alignment of the various chapters in Lv13 shows that different leprous eruptions have different names based on the place of occurence In particular NETHEK refers to the LEPROSY of SKIN ON WHICH GROWS HAIR (Beard and Head)
CHAPTER | Leprous Name | Verse | Place of Leprosy
Lv13-01:08 | Tzarath | Lv13-03 | Skin
Lv13-09:17 | Tzarath | Lv13-11 | Skin
Lv13-18:23 | Tzarath | Lv13-20 | Scab of Cut
Lv13-24:28 | Tzarath | Lv13-25 | Scab of Burn
Lv13-29:37 | Nethek | Lv13-30 | Head|Beard
Lv13-38:39 | Bohack | Lv13-39 | Clean Spots

Alignment of the various chapters in Lv13 allows us to align the various phrases on the turning of hair. In particular we find that -- IN IT IS eg BLONDE HAIR -- TURNED eg WHITE HAIR align. This leads us to conclude that we are talking about INITIALLY BLACK hair TURNING (CHANGING) to WHITE or BLONDE
CHAPTER | Hair color | Verse | Place of Leprosy
Lv13-01:08 | Turned white | Lv13-03 | Skin
Lv13-09:17 | Turned white | Lv13-10 | Skin
