VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Many Rashis are basic, explaining MEANING or GRAMMAR However some Rashis are based on comparisons with other verses. When several similar verses are ALIGNED, the minor differences in these verses suggest new laws. EXAMPLE ------- Two 4 word phrases on sprinkling oil during the Lepor Guilt Offering Procedure give a punchy example By way of introduction recall that during the Lepor Guilt offering - 1st we sprinkle blood - then we sprinkle oil The oil is sprinkled on the same place as the blood was sprinkled. --------------------------------------------------------------- Lv14-17 sprinkle....ON THE ------------ BLOOD OF GUILT SAC Lv14-28a sprinkle....ON THE place of the BLOOD OF THE GUILT SAC --------------------------------------------------------------- From the alignment Rashi infers a simple nuance -- it is the PLACE that determines not the BLOOD. -- Hence the priest sprinkles even if the blood -- got washed off (So there was a PLACE OF BLOOD -- but no BLOOD)

The two verses on sprinkling oil during the Lepor Guilt offering. The alignment differences leads to a Talmudic type distinction
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3
Lv14-17 | sprinkle on... | place of | blood of guilt sac
Lv14-28a | sprinkle on... | blood of guilt sac
Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 | |
|
||||
*1 Both verses speak about sprinkling *2 One verse emphasizes to sprinkle on the PLACE of the blood while the other verse simply says to sprinkle on the BLOOD of the guilt (The blood was sprinkled first and then the oil). So if blood is there you sprinkle on the blood But if the blood evaporate you sprinkle on the place of the blood |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way a dictionary explains the meaning of words. One vehicle of word meaning presented by Rashi is the two letter root theory. As everyone know the Hebrew language is based on 3 letter roots which are CONJUGATED in various ways. For example the root S-M-R can mean, I WATCHED (ShMaRTi), YOU WILL WATCH (TiShMoR) etc based on conjugation. In addition to the 3 letter theory Rashi believed in the 2 Letter root theory--that is 3 letter roots govern GRAMMATICAL conjugation while 2 letter roots govern MEANING. Every 3 letter root has a meaning that is determined by the meanings of the 1 and 2 letter roots comprising the root. For example: The letter NUN denotes INTENSITY, ALOT, or INTRINSICness. The list below illustrates this. EXAMPLE ------- - Tauv-Caph means INSIDE. Tauv-NUN-Caph therefore means ALOT INSIDE--in fact Tauv-NUN-Caph denotes the soft inside of the ear. EXAMPLE ------- - BO denotes INSIDE. Beth-Hey-NUN means INTRINSIC to INSIDENESS. In fact, the Bo-Hen denotes the THUMB the organ that enables one to hold an object (The thumb opposes the other fingers and enables held objects to be inside the fist)

Rashi believed in 3 letter conjugation roots and 2 letter meaning roots. That is, Rashi believed that each root is conjugated according to the rules of 3 letter roots. But Rashi supplemented this with the belief that each root can be explained by ascribing meaning to individual letters and seeing the 3 letter roots meaning as emanating from its letters. A simple example is that Nun-Beth(HOLLOW) means CHILD*1 OF (NUN) INSIDE(Beth). Other examples where NUN means CHILD=POSSESSED are presented below. In the list below the English translation is CAPPED while the Hebrew is LOWERCASE
ROOT | MEANS | NUN MEANS | END ROOT | MEANS
Nun-Beth | HOLLOW | CHILD OF | beth | INSIDE
Nun-Zayin-Kuf | DAMAGE | CHILD OF | z-k | SPARKS
Nun-Mem-Resh | LEOPARD | CHILD OF | m-r | BRAZENNESS
Nun-Tzde-Lamd | SAVE | CHILD OF | z-l | SHADE
Nun-Kuph-Mem | REVENGE | CHILD OF | k-m | STANDING UP
Tauv-NUN-Caph | Earlobe | CHILD OF | T-Ch | INSIDE
Beth-Hey-NUN | Thumb | CHILD OF | Beth | INSIDE*2
|
|||||
*1 Throughout the Bible if you want to state that someone was KNOWN for something then you state that the person was the CHILD OF it. eg RIF RAFS are called CHILDS OF NO-NAME *2 Functionally, the THUMB opposes other fingers and enables humans to grasp objects. Hence the THUMB enables things to be held INSIDE ones hand |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ When the Lepor wishes to remove his impurity he followed a LEPOR PURIFICATION PROCEDURE. This procedure differed depending on whether the LEPOR was rich or poor. - The RICH LEPOR procedure is mentioned at Lv14-10:20 - The POOR LEPOR procedure is mentioned at Lv14-21:32 There are a total of 17 steps to the procedure mentioned. Both these chapters almost repeat verbatim the same items. By contrasting certain items we find the basic differences -- The RICH LEPOR used 3 lambs -- The POOR LEPOR used 1 lamb + 2 birds The procedures are compactly depicted in the list below By aligning the bulleted lists we infer the context of many statements (These are indicated by the footnotes which cover several Rashis)

We align the 2 Lepor purification procedures (For Rich and poor lepors). The basic differences are that - The Rich procedure uses 3 lambs(Guilt, Sin and UP sac) - The poor procedure uses 1 lamb(Guilt) and 2 birds Complete details are presented in the footnotes which summarize several Rashis

*1 Technically a LOG is volume measure equal to the volume of 6 medium size eggs. Since two eggs fill a cup and since 4 cups make an English Quart we think it proper to translate LOG as QUART Technically the LOG as 3 cups while the QUART has 4 cups. However the translation gives the FEEL of the measure. The reader should be aware that thoughout this digest the word QUART means LOG *2 The sequence TAKE--BRING-NEAR--WAIVE--SLAUGHTER implies - that TAKE means DESIGNATE it (as a guilt offering - BRING NEAR means BRING TO TEMPLE DOORS *10 - WAIVE means WAIVE LIVE *11 These are the Rashis at Lv14-12a Lv14-12b*12 The parallel phrases in the poor lepor procedure -- BRING TO TEMPLE||TAKE THE LAMB seem to support the contention that there are two procedures - BRINGING the lamb near the temple - DESIGNATING it as something to be brought to God *3 The minchah here refers to the MINCHAH libations that went with all animals (See List104d for copious details as well as the main reference in Nu15) (Rashi on Lv14-20a) *4 This phrase of the 2 birds is out of sequence (In the RICH LEPOR offering the UP and SIN are mentioned first because they are also lambs while for the POOR LEPOR the UP and SIN offering are mentioned 4th) *5 Most of the phrases are repeated identically in these two chapters. However the minor differences show the contrast between the RICH LEPOR sin offering and the POOR LEPOR sin offering. - The rich lepor offering uses 3 lambs - The poor lepor offering uses 1 lamb and 2 birds In both cases the lamb is offered as a GUILT offering However the UP and SIN offering are offered as - 2 lambs in the rich offering - 2 birds in the poor offering But the authority of Nu15 teaches us that we have 1 tenth flour PER LAMB for minchah libations. Therefore we have - 3 tenth flours for the rich lepor offering of 3 lambs - 1 tenth flour for the poor lepor offering of 1 lamb (Rashi Lv14-21a) *6 (Rashi Lv14-21b) Rashi points out that since every minchah offering has mixed in it oil therefore the entire Lepor procedure must have--beside the QUART OIL used for sprinklings--additional oil used in the Minchahs. In Talmudic lingo: The Biblical requirement to bring a QUART OF OIL (For the sprinklings) is ADDITIVE not RESTRICTIVE (It adds on to the total oil but does not exclude obvious oil) *7 The slaughtering of the UP is not mentioned in the POOR LEPOR offering (Since birds are NIPPED not slaughtered) I however dont know why it didnt say AND HE SHALL NIP THE BIRD in the poor lepor offering
|
|||||
*10 The word BRING-NEAR can equally mean - bring to temple door (Literal meaning) - offer a sacrifice (The word for sacrifice in Hebrew is NEARING from BRING NEAR) Ordinarily in the sacrificial procedures the term BRING NEAR means OFFER. Here (in Lv14-10) we take it literally to mean BRING NEAR to the temple because of the sequence (BRINGnear-...-SLAUGHTER--etc) A similar usage occurs at Lv01-03 *11 Most Temple waiving procedures are done on organs of slaughtered animals (cf Lv07-30 or Nu06-19:20) By contrast the SEQUENCE here requires us to interpret WAIVING as referring to LIVE WAIVING *12 In passing Malbim expresses surprise at Rashi who mentions that the GUILT offering must be DESIGNATED for its purpose (Since DESIGNATION is a general sacrificial requirement). Malbim should have known better (Then to question Rashi). As shown above Rashi was simply consistently commenting on SEQUENCE |

Nu15-01:16 lays down rules that FOR EVERY SACRIFICE (With a few minor exceptions) we have Minchah libations. The minchah libations occur in the following quantities -For SHEEP--- Use 1/10 flour and 1/4 wine -For RAM----- Use 2/10 flour and 1/3 wine -For OX------ Use 3/10 flour and 1/2 wine These minchah libations are frequently cross referenced in the rest of the Bible. The list below shows such cross references in Nu28. These minchah libations are standard and are always in these proportions.
