VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain Grammar the same way modern Grammar books do. Grammar deals with many topics In this posting we deal with the grammatical rules governing sentences. Most Biblical verses are complete sentences. However in certain rare cases TWO Verses form ONE sentence. A list of examples is provided below EXAMPLES Lv17-16a ----------------- Lv17-16 and Lv17-17 neatly form a single sentence with compound if clauses. ------------------------------------------------------------- IF you eat a carcass THEN '''''''''''''''''''''''' if you immerse THEN you-re pure '''''''''''''''''''''''' if you dont THEN you-re impure ------------------------------------------------------------- Rashi suggests reading this as a multi-verse sentence. That is it reads as follows ------------------------------------------------------------- IF you eat a carcass THEN if you immerse THEN you-re pure IF you eat a carcass THEN if you dont THEN you-re impure ------------------------------------------------------------- EXAMPLE Lv17-03:05 ------------------ These 3 verses form one unit. From the alignment of the subparts we infer various nuances of meaning. The clauses in Lv17-16:17 form a nested IF-THEN structure. Computer programmers in any language will immediately recognize the nested structure. Rashis point is that the FIRST IF CLAUSE carries over to BOTH SECOND CLAUSES. -- If you eat a carcass and DO immerse and wait till eve--then pure -- If you eat a carcass and DONT immerese-------then you are impure This is also an example of the export import law of logic which states that the sentence structure ----- IF A THEN IF B THEN X means the same thing as ----- IF A and B THEN X In other words the DOUBLE IF becomes a CONJUNCTION(AND) | |||

Recall that every noun has a gender. One of Rashis jobs is to indicate Noun-Gender EXAMPLE Lv17-14b ---------------- For the SOUL of all FLESH---SHE is in the BLOOD RASHI: SOUL=is FEMININE FLESH,BLOOD=MASCULINE Hence the sentence translates -For the SOUL (of all fleshes) IS in their blood In other words Rashi identifies the reference of the pronoun to the word SOUL EXAMPLE Dt28-61 Dt29-20a ------------------------ Dt28-61 In the book of THIS TORAH RASHI: Both THIS and TORAH are feminine Dt29-20a In THIS BOOK of the Torah RASHI: Both THIS and BOOK are masculine Other examples are presnted in the list below | ||

*1 Throughout Lv13 the Bible speaks about - Leprosy(Feminine) - Flesh (Masculine) - Wounds (Masculine) Hence where the Bible says IT (HE-SHE) Rashi must clarify if they eg are referring to the WOUND or LEPROSY *2 IN THIS TORAH BOOK vs IN THE BOOK OF THIS TORAH In one case THIS refers to BOOK(masculine) while in the other case it refers to TORAH(Feminine) *3 Cute---The verse seems as if it says FULFILL (WORK) THIS WEEK But THIS is FEMININE and WEEK is MASCULINE! So Rashi explains that the verse means FULFILL THE WEEK OF THIS GIRL That is Laban said to Jacob that he had to work another week of years (7 years) to marry Leah *4 Rashi makes 2 points here: - Jacob interrupts his address to Simon-Levi - Jacob addresses his HONOR(soul):HONOR DONT GET NEAR THEM Such an abrupt change has important emotional overtones According to Rashi the verses would read ------------------------------------------ Simon and Levi are brothers where criminal tools MY HONOR---dont get near the meetings MY SOUL----dont get involved in their secrets For they tried to murder in anger ------------------------------------------ Rashi infers this both from the gender and person of the verbs. For the verse does not say ------------------------------------------ May my SOUL not get near them (3rd person) ------------------------------------------ But rather says ---------------------------------------------- My SOUL: YOU do not get near them (2nd person) ---------------------------------------------- It was important for Rashi to state this since the difference in spelling between SECOND PERSON FUTURE MASCULINE and THIRD PERSON FUTURE FEMININE is very small. *5 MINCHAH is FEMININE while FLOUR is MASCULINE So when it says IT(HE) IS A VENGENANCE MINCHAH, the word IT refers to the FLOUR not to the MINCHAH The FLOUR of this Minchah was of poorer quality to symbolize that the suspected adulteress did something seemly (behaved with poorer quality) |
