VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain meaning the
same way the dictionary does. One vehicle for
explaining meaning is the method by which words
acquire NEW IDIOMATIC MEANING

EXAMPLE
-------
The word BREAD refers to the MAIN food of human
meals. By metaphoric transfer it also refers
to the BREAD OF GOD--that is, the offerings
which people make.

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Many Rashi-ists perceive Rashi as explaining
meaning, grammar and internal consistency.

But an equally important set of Rashi rules is
the explanation and citation of cross references
to clarify verse meanings.

EXAMPLE
-------
Lv21-17:18 states
-----------------------------------------------------
-- Blemish priests may not offer sacrifices
-- BECAUSE BLEMISHED PRIESTS MAY NOT OFFER SACRIFICES
-----------------------------------------------------

Notice how the reason and cause are the same. Rashi
clarifies this with another verse where this is
stated more explicitly Mal01-08

-----------------------------------------------------
If you offer a blind animal there is nothing wrong?
Would you give a blind animal as a gift to governor?
Would he accept it--would he grant your favor?

We present a list of verses where
further details of the verse are presented
from other verses.

The classical example is the Passover Hagaddah
example: The verse Dt26-05d, ONLY A FEW JEWS
WENT DOWN TO EGYPT, is illumined by Gn46-27
which states that 70 PEOPLE WENT DOWN TO EGYPT.

Thus the technique of OTHER VERSES teaches
us that A FEW JEWS(Dt26-05d) means 70(Gn46-27)

COMMENTS
*1 Lv21-18 says
- BLemished priests dont serve BECAUSE blemished
- priests dont serve

Mal01-08 amplifies this
- Would you give a blemished animal to your governor?
- Would he like it? Would he grant your favor?

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 major goals is to explain style. Style
dictates such issues as whether we interpret a verse
broadly or restrictively.

Rashi employs the Rabbi Ishmael style rules to decide
whether a verse should be interpreted literally or
restrictively.

EXAMPLE
-------
Lv21-18:21 is written in the general-particular-general
style as follows
-- GENERAL: BLEMISHED PRIESTS DO NOT SERVE
-- DETAILS: ----------------------------- Blind,lame,...
-- GENERAL: BLEMISHED PRIESTS DO NOT SERVE

According to Rabbi Ishmael, this GENERAL-DETAIL-GENERAL
style requires a BROAD INTERPRETATION. Hence the Rashi

-- All blemished priests (not just those enumerated
-- such as blind, lame) are prohibited from serving
-- in the Temple

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 major goals is to indicate typing methods
such as bold, italics, bullets etc. The Biblical Author
did not have these methods available---hence the Bible
uses certain techniques to mimic these methods.

The Bible indicates BULLETS by skillful repetition of
keywords. Lv21-22 and Lv21-23 provide some examples

EXAMPLES
--------
Bread
----- FROM the holy of holies
----- FROM the holies
he shall eat

However
------- TO the Paroceth
------- TO the altar
he shall not approach

The Bulleted structure of Lv21-22

The REPEATED KEYWORD FROM indicates bullets
The Bible indicats BULLETS by repeating keywords
like FROM. If we translated this into modern
notation we would simply use bullets (*)
PHRASE1 BULLET BULLETED ITEMS
The offerings of God
FROM The Holy of holies*10
FROM The Holies*11
he shall eat
COMMENTS

LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10 Malbim points out that the GENERAL idea that priests
(whether blemished or not) can eat even from Holy
of holies is found at Lv06-11
-------------------------------------
ALL priests...shall eat (the Minchah)
-------------------------------------

Malbim, then, citing Talmudic discussions, points
out that this extra verse Lv21-22 includes all
blemished priests whether
- blemished from birth
- acquired blemish
- a blemish that will eventally heal

Rashi however seems to be concerned with the repeated
keyword FROM which indicates a BULLET structure
that includes all HOLY objects That is Rashi is
just interested in the GENERAL idea and is not
trying to explain all Talmudic detail

*11 It is customary when learning Leviticus to question
the LOGICAL NEED for every verse. Here too the
Sifray explains why the Bible has to mention both
HOLIES and HOLY OF HOLIES. This explanation will
be presented below

But EVEN without this explanation we still have
a perfect understanding of the verse For our
understanding of the verse is not impaired
(nor enriched) by our ability to answer, or
not, Talmudic questions.

The Sifray explains that
-- if it only mentioned HOLY OF HOLY offerings
I would assume that there is no problem with
priests eating HOLY offerings

-- if it only mentioned HOLY offerings I would
assume that blemished priests can eat HOLY
OF HOLY OFFERINGS since we find a precedent
that Moses ate HOLY OF HOLY OFFERINGS

Again this detail is not essential to our
understanding the verse

The Bullet structure of Lv21-22:23.

The Biblical Author indicated bullets by skillfully
repeating Keywords. In Lv21-23 the keyword TO indicates
bulleting. If we were writing this in modern notation
we would use BULLETS(*).

Further details are provided in the footnotes
PHRASE1 BULLET BULLETED ITEMS

TO the altar*1 *10

COMMENTS
*1 The contrast of bullets---PAROCETH(Inner Veil)
vs ALTAR suggests we are talking about the outer
altar (since the inner altar is right near the
Paroceth and need not be mentioned

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 It is customary when learning Leviticus to question
the LOGICAL NEED for every verse. Here too the
Sifray explains why the Bible has to mention both
PAROCETH and ALTAR. This explanation will
be presented below

But EVEN without this explanation we still have
a perfect understanding of the verse For our
understanding of the verse is not impaired
(nor enriched) by our ability to answer, or
not, Talmudic questions.

The Sifray explains that
-- if it had just mentioned the PAROCETH
I would think that only the inner veil
is prohibited but not the outer one

-- if it had just mentioned the ALTAR
I would think that only the ALTAR where
he can ordinarily serve is prohibited (To
enter); but the PAROCETH where he cant
serve anyway--perhaps he can enter to
eg do maintenance work (See footnote
#11 for further details)

Again this detail is not essential to our
understanding the verse

*11 It is not clear WHAT is prohibited by this verse
The Malbim cites a Rambam-Ramban controversy
There are a variety of possibilities

-- Dont enter to serve on the altar or Paroceth
-- Dont enter to do maintenance
-- Dont enter for no purpose

Each of these approaches has difficulties
(Eg Why mention he cant serve on the Paroceth
when even a stranger cant serve there)

The Malbim leaves this analysis with the
statement IT NEEDS INVESTIGATION.

HOWEVER, all we our pointing out is that
every Talmudic commentary MUST deal with
the BULLETED nature of the verse and its
implications (Two items are prohibited--
paroceth and altar entry)
