VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi has 6 main methods of interpretation. Some of these methods are INTERNAL--such as word meanings and grammar. By contrast other methods are external. Rashi illumines a verses meaning using cross references to other verses. A particularly interesting example are cross references involving the tabernacle The Tabernacle construction is mentioned in 3 places - Ex25 thru Ex27 The order to make a Temple - Ex28 - Ex29 Moses assignment of tasks - Ex35 - Ex40 The carrying out of the tasks Hence cross references from these 3 sources illumine each other. There are many Rashis that fit into this paradigm.

*1 Ex38-07 illumines Ex25-07 with FURTHER DETAILS The SHOHAM stones were used in the PRIESTLY clothes *2 Ex27-20:21 (also see Lv24-01:04) where we obtain the FURTHER DETAIL that the OLIVE OIL had to be specially crushed for the Menorah--hence this wasnt ordinary oil but required craftsmanship*10
|
||||
*10 The Talmud Menacoth goes into details how olive oil is made. There are a variety of stages - initial crushing of olives (Soaking out oil) - a beam crush of olives (to soak out extra oil) - pressing the remaining olives for extra oil Note that beam crushes of olives will give solid matter residue (The olives) while the initial crushing of olives (and allowing the oil to ooze out) will give CLEAR CRUSHED OIL There are a variety of other details on these matters but the above is the main thrust |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain Grammar the same way modern textbooks do. One class of grammar rules deal with style--eg how paragraphs should be organized. Rashi knew 4 methods of connecting consecutive paragraphs - CAUSE - ENABLEMENT - CONTRAST - UNIFYING THEME EXAMPLE: -------- Ex35-01:03 commands the required observance of Shabbath.. Ex35-04:29 commands the building of the Temple Rashi regards these 2 paragraphs as contrasting each other. EVEN THOUGH you have to build a temple (and EVEN THOUGH you MUST offer sacrifices on Sabbath (eg Nu28-09:10) NEVERTHELESS you may NOT build the Temple on the Sabbath.

A list of paragraphs | with contrast |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | |||
The following list contains consecutive chapters with contrasting themes. For further examples see the CP (Consecutive chapter) series at http://www.RashiYomi.com/calendar1.htm The Consecutive Chapter series was given in July 2000
VERSE | TOPIC IN 1st CHAPTER | TOPIC IN 2nd CHAPTER
Lv26-01a | Being a slave to Non Jew | Prohibition of Idolat
Dt29-12a | Curses | We are before God*2
Lv19-03c | Fear Parents | Watch Sabbaths*3
Dt22-12a | No Shaatnez | Tzitzith*4
Ex35-02a | Observe Shabbath | Build Temple*5
|
|||
*1 On a superficial level Rashi seems to be connecting 2 verses. Avoid idolatry DESPITE your being a slave to a non jew (who encourages its violation). Do not think "I will worship idols now and when I am free I will go back to believing in God" On a profound level Rashi sees a unifying theme to this whole chapter. The chapter encourages observing the shimitah laws which encourage abstaining from agriculture once every 7 years so that people can devote themselves to God and study. If one violates these laws he is progressively punished. Here is the sequence of punishments {LIST} {Paragraphs in BEHAR} VERSE LAW ===== === Lv25-01:12 Observe the 7 and 50 year Land sabbaticals Lv25-13:24 If not you will have to sell your MOVABLES Lv25-25:28 If not you will have to sell your LAND Lv25-29:34 If not you will have to sell your HOUSE Lv25-35:38 If not you will have to LOAN Lv25-39:46 If not you will have to become a SLAVE Lv25-47:54 If not you'll become a NONJEWISH SLAVE Lv26-01:03 If not you'll be tempted to IDOLATRY Thus Rashi does not merely teach juxtaposition of verses but he also teaches juxtaposition of ALL paragraphs in the chapter. *2 Dt28 gives a long list of curses if the Jews violate the commandments. Dt29-12 says "You are all STANDING before God today" In other words despite the curses for disobediance you are still here before God(The implication being that no matter how angry God gets he will not destroy you) A further support for this theme can come from the General-particular-General form Dt28 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Dt29-12 PARTICULAR: You are standing here before God Dt29-19 GENERAL: Curses for disobediance Thus the General-Particular-General form shows that Gods curses still allow us to "Stand before him"--in other words they are educative curses not punitive. *3 In other words (always) "Observe the Sabbaths" DESPITE a request to the contrary "By your parents" This can happen if eg your parents ask you to desecrate the Sabbath. You must observe the Sabbath even if your parents request to the contrary. And this can be generalized to all Torah laws(that they take precedence over your parents request) *4 Wear Tzitzith DESPITE the fact that they may have Shaatnez Wool and linen together (In the priestly garments made of Linen the Tzitzith were made of wool--thus the commandment of Tzitzith OVERRIDES the prohibtion of wearing wool and linen) *5 So EVEN THOUGH you must build a temple and EVEN THOUGH temple sacrifices MUST be offered on Sabbath (Nu28-09:10) nevertheless you may NOT build the temple on Sabbath |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way a dictionary explains the meaning of words. In explaining word meaning Rashi had at his disposal a variety of vehicles. One vehicle is the 8 methods of naming objects. EXAMPLE ------- The PENTAGON is named by its FORM The UN is named by its FUNCTION and purpose EXAMPLE Ex35-13a ------- The FACE BREAD was bread that was bent over so that it had the FORM of 2 faces facing each other. Here we use the method of naming objects by FORM EXAMPLE Ex35-22c ------- The LEWD was a piece of Jewelry worn on the womb; its purpose was to arouse.

For a good reference see http://www.RashiYOMi.Com/naming-8.htm Other lists in this series give examples of each method
(#) | METHOD | EXAMPLE | |
(1) | SUBSTANCE | The Plaster, the Linoleum
(2) | FORM | Pentagon | |
(3) | ACTIVITY FORM | SURFing the web

Recall that every noun has a gender. Some nouns however can have either gender. EXAMPLE Ex35-17a ------- THe courtyard... ... its (Masculine) stands & ... its (feminine) sockets
