VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to give the meanings of words the same way the dictionary does. Rashi sometimes traces SPECIAL WORDS that occur several dozen times in the Torah-- Rashi shows a unifying thread and commonality of meaning. The word LAYMOR is the infinitive of the word TO SAY--so the simple translation of LAYMOR means TO BE SAID. In the lists below we will explore 4 manifestations of verses where TO BE SAID occurs. EXAMPLE 1: Lv10-16c TO BE SAID=REQUEST RESPONSE ----------------------------------------------- TEXT: Moses got angry TO BE SAID RASHI: Moses demanded an ANSWER to what angered him (Hence the verse says TO BE SAID) EXAMPLE 2: Dt15-11b TO BE SAID=Spread the word ---------------------------------------------- TEXT: Therefore I command charity laws TO BE SAID RASHI: One should spread the word about the importance of charity laws and the reward for following them EXAMPLE 3: Nu26-03b TO BE SAID=Transmit --------------------------------------- TEXT: God spoke to Moses/Elazar TO BE SAID RASHI: The commandment should be transmitted to Jews EXAMPLE 4: Nu12-13b TO BE SAID-- ``````````Moses demands response -------------------------------- TEXT: Moses prayed to God, for his ````sister TO BE SAID RASHI: Moses, as it were, demanded `````` from God an answer

In the verses below the word LAYMOR, TO BE SAID, indicates that a RESPONSE was requested
VERSE | INCIDENT | RESPONSE REQUESTED
Ex20-01c | Decalogue | People should acknowledge*1
Lv01-01f | Sacrifices | People should acknowledge*2
Lv10-16c | Moses angry | Wanted an explanation*3
Dt03-23b | Moses-Israel | Why cant I enter Israel*4
Nu12-13b | Moses-Miriam | Why was my sister punished*5
Ex06-12 | Moses-Exodus | How will Pharoh listen*6
Nu27-15b | Moses-Joshua | God,please appoint leader*7
Ex17-04 | Moses-nation | They will stone me
|

*1 Cf. Nu27-11:26 for an example of national acknowledgement of laws *2 Cf Ex24-03 for an example of national acknowledgement and acceptance of Gods laws *3 Cf Lv10-19:20 for the answer *4 Cf Dt03-26:28 for the answer *5 Cf Nu12-14:15 for Gods answer to Moses *6 Cf Ex07-08:13 for the answer *7 Cf Nu27-18:21 for the answer |

In the verses below the phrase TO BE SAID indicates that the item was meant to be SPREAD THROUGHOUT the nation. Footnotes illuminate further
VERSE | ITEM | WHAT IS BEING SPREAD
Ex19-12b | Border nation | Border SAYS: Dont come near*1
Dt15-11b | Give charity | How good/important charity is*2
Nu14-17a | Gods Grace | Gods mercy on repentant people*3
Dt34-04a | Patriarchs | God promised them Israel*4
|
|||
*1 As the verse indicates: Moses told them there was a death penalty to anyone who tried to mount the mountain during the decalogue *2 Charity is the only commandment where it says TO BE SAID. The chapter involved clearly states the reward for giving charity. Cf Mal03-10 for an explicit statement that we can TEST God in Charity (If we give to Charity we will be rewarded) Charity is the only commandment on which we can test God *3 It is clear from Ex33-12:23 that the revelation of Gods attributes of Mercy were a response to Moses request for God to reveal to Moses how God runs the world---such a revelation would help Moses in leading the people. Hence God wanted this information spread Everyone should know that God forgives repentant people *4 Not all prophecies are meant to be public and spread. But the Promise to the Patriarchs to give the Jews Israel is public and meant to be spread. Hence God tell Moses here is the land I promised the Patriarchs 400 years ago. |

In the verses below the word LAYMOR, to be said, indicates some type of transmission *10
VERSE | INCIDENT | WHO SHOULD TRANSMIT WHAT
Dt01-09a | Appoint Judges | Moses ordered to tell Jews*1
Dt05-05a | Decalogue | Moses transmitted 10 commands*1
Ex35-04a | Temple | God told me to Tell you*1
Nu26-03b | Census | People should be told about it*1
Lv01-01f | Sacrifices | Laws are for sake of people*1
Lv11-01b | Kosher laws | Moses/Aaron to Elazar to Jews*2
|
|||
*1 In all these verses there is an emphasis that the laws were specifically given FOR THE SAKE of the JEWS. For example God did NOT just tell Moses to make Him a Temple but rather God told Moses to TELL THE JEWS that they were privileged to make a Temple so that God would dwell in THEIR MIDST (Ex25-01:08). In other words their is an emphasis that the Law was given to Moses FOR THE SAKE OF THE JEWISH PEOPLE Similarly the CENSUS was not a formality but rather done to show Gods endearment to the Jewish people (and therefore He constantly counted them) *2 What a Beautiful Rashi. The Biblical text states - God spoke to MOSES/AARON to be said TO THEM. - Speak to the JEWS Note the 3 units invovled in the transmission - MOSES/AARON - THEM (Elazar and ITHAMAR the 2 people in the immediately preceding chapter) - JEWS Hence the Rashi - God TRANSMITTED the laws to Moses/Aaron - Moses and Aaron TRANSMITTED the laws to ELAZAR - ELAZAR/ITHAMAR trasmitted the laws to the Jews (A further nuance in Rashi revolves around the repeated word TO (TO Moses and TO Aaron) which implies that God spoke to Moses who in turn spoke to Aaron (This nuance will be covered at a later date))
|
|||
*10 The difference between LIST005c and LIST005b is as follows: - LIST005b gives examples where the goal is to have the word SPREAD THROUGHOUT THE COMMUNITY - LIST005c gives examples where the goal is to TRANSMIT information to SPECIFIC INDIVIDUALS (But not necessarily to spread the word everywhere) |

In the verses below the word LAYMOR, TO BE SAID, indicates that a RESPONSE was requested There are 5 verses where Moses requested an answer from God (These are the only 5 verses where it says MOSES SPOKE TO GOD,...TO BE SAID)*10
VERSE | INCIDENT | RESPONSE REQUESTED
Dt03-23b | Moses-Israel | Why cant I enter Israel*4
Nu12-13b | Moses-Miriam | Why was my sister punished*5
Ex06-12 | Moses-Exodus | How will Pharoh listen*6
Nu27-15b | Moses-Joshua | God,please appoint leader*7
Ex17-04 | Moses-nation | They will stone me
|
|||
*4 Cf Dt03-26:28 for the answer *5 Cf Nu12-14:15 for Gods answer to Moses *6 Cf Ex07-08:13 for the answer *7 Cf Nu27-18:21 for the answer

*10 Actually there are 2 Rashis citing Sifrahs that list these verses Nu12-13b Dt03-23b Remarkably - one of these Rashis says there were 4 places - one of these Rashis says there were 3 places But the list above shows there are 5. There are at least 4 answers why Rashi said 3 and 4 vs 5. (Some come from the Sifsay chachamim while some come from me) These 4 reasons are presented below. However the main point of Rashi is that MOSES SPOKE TO GOD..SAYING occurs only 5 times (The fact that 3 or 4 of these 5 have special characteristics is a SECONDARY point to Rashi--the primary point is that there are 5 verses). Here are the explanations on why Rashi omitted cases EXPLANATION 1(Hendel) ------------- 3 of the 5 verses use non-conventional words for talking (SCREAM, SUPPLICATE etc) Hence Rashi did not have to mention the obvious cases of MOSES SPOKE...TO BE SAID but did have to emphasize the non obvious cases EXPLANATION 2(Sifsay Chachamim) ------------- 3 of the 5 verses involve PRAYER (supplicate or screaming to God on issues). Hence Rashi only mentioned those prayers where Moses demanded an answer (Since there is a certain contradiction and non-expectedness in praying in supplication but demanding an answer). EXPLANATION 3(Hendel) --------------------- In 4 of the 5 verses one can SEE Gods answer (eg Moses asked for a leader and God responds by ordering Joshua picked). Hence Rashi only picked those examples of verses where it TO BE SAID is followed by Gods answer (Since those 4 cases PROVE that TO BE SAID indicates a demanded response from God) EXPLANATION 4(Hendel) --------------------- Only 4 of the verses have the phrase (Moses ....) TO GOD TO BE SAID (The 5th verse states MOSES SPOKE BEFORE GOD TO BE SAID. Hence Rashi only picked on the traditional TO GOD TO BE SAID verses and left out unconventional forms (BEFORE GOD) |
