VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
Many Rashis are basic, explaining meaning or grammar
However some Rashis are based on comparisons with
other verses. When several similar verses are
aligned, the minor differences in these verses
suggest new laws.

The half dozen verses on the TAKING FISTFUL
procedure for the Minchah offering illustrates this

EXAMPLE
-------
Some verses say FULL FISTFUL while others say
IN A FISTFUL. The FULL-IN contrast suggests an
EXACT FISTFUL: not more (contradicting IN) and
not less (Contradicting FULL).

EXAMPLE
-------
Some verses say HE FISTS THE MINCHAH while
others say HE FISTS THE MINCHAH WITH HIS
FISTFUL. The added emphasis on HIS FISTFUL
shows that the FISTFUL act is personal
(that is, dependent on HIS FISTFUL and not
dependent on measures)

The half dozen verses on the FISTFUL procedure
The minor differences shows MULTIPLE CRITERIA
The FISTFUL must be both FULL and IN IT--that
is an EXACT FISTFUL that is neither more nor less
VERSE PHRASE1 PHRASE2 PHRASE3 PHRASE4
Lv02-02 He FISTS his FULL FISTFUL From oil & flour
Lv05-12 He FISTS his FULL FISTFUL its Rememberance
lv06-08 He LIFTS IN his FISTFUL From oil & flour
Nu05-26 He FISTS -------- ------- From Remembrance
Differs *1 *2 *3 *4
COMMENTS
*1 He LIFTS|FISTS the oil and flour. This indicates
an emphasis on LIFTING ONLY oil and flour (So if
in taking the fistful he lifts salt or
frankincense then he has not fulfilled his
obligation)

*2 IN|FULL Fistful. So the FISTFUL must be BOTH
FULL and IN--that is an EXACT fistful--neither
missing (contradicting FULL) nor overflowing
(contradicting IN)

*3 HE FISTS vs HE FISTS HIS FISTFUL. This indicates
that the FISTFUL measure is PERSONAL (HIS
fistful) and not e.g. a standardized measured
cup

*4 OIL-FLOUR vs REMEMBERANCE. Sin
offerings do not have OIL-FRANKINCENSE
(Lv05-11)
LIST303a

The half dozen verses on the FISTFUL procedure
The minor differences emphasize nuances. For
example FISTS HIS FISTFUL (vs FISTS) indicates
a personal FISTFUL(vs a standardized measure).

Similarly LIFTS OIL & FLOUR vs FISTS OIL
and FLOUR emphasizes that the LIFTING can only
be of OIL and FLOUR (but not eg other things)
VERSE PHRASE1 PHRASE2 PHRASE3 PHRASE4
Lv02-02 He FISTS his FULL FISTFUL From oil & flour
Lv05-12 He FISTS his FULL FISTFUL its Rememberance
lv06-08 He LIFTS IN his FISTFUL From oil & flour
Nu05-26 He FISTS -------- ------- From Remembrance

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY
------------------
One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning
of words the same way the dictionary explains meaning.

It was shown in http://www.RashiYomi.com/lv26-46a.htm
that the word TORAH basically means PRINCIPLES.

Hence if a BIblical paragraph begins
-- THESE ARE THE PRINCIPLES OF THE MINCHAH OFFERING
we infer that everything in that chapter is a
basic guiding principle or requirement of
ALL MINCHAHS*10

EXAMPLE Lv06-07a
----------------
Taking a fistful of flour and oil applies to all
Minchahs(But in Lv02 this procedure is only
mentioned by SOME Minchahs--hence we need the
generalization to all minchahs)*1

EXAMPLE Lv06-08e
----------------
The sequence of steps:
- FISTING the oil and flour, and then
- taking the Frankincense,
- offering it on the altar
applies to all Minchahs even though it is only
mentioned by some. The reason we know it applies to
ALL minchahs is because this sequence of steps is
mentioned in the chapter of MINCHAH PRINCIPLES*2

List of verses where TORAH means PRINCIPLES
COMMENTS
*1 Cf The 5 Minchahs mentioned in Lv02. Only
some of them mention the OIL and FLOUR Hence
the OIL-FLOUR was repeated in the MINCHAH
PRINCIPLE chapter so that it applies to
all Minchahs

*2 Cf The 5 Minchahs mentioned in Lv02. The
3 step procedure of FISTFUL, FRANKINCENSE,
OFFERING is not mentioned in all 5. Hence
the FISTFUL-FRANKINCENSE-OFFERING procedure
is repeated in the MINCHAH PRINCIPLE CHAPTER
to emphasize the applicability of this
sequence to all cases.

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Our approach differs from the traditional
approach that Rashi is inferring these
laws (that eg oil and flour apply to all
Minchahs) from the EXTRA MENTION of them
a second time.

Our view here is that the inference that
eg flour and oil apply to all Minchahs
comes from the EXPLICIT introduction
that THESE ARE THE GUIDING PRINCIPLES
OF THE MINCHAH indicating that they
apply to all Minchahs.

A list of verses where TORAH means PRINCIPLES
(Torah can also be a proper noun referring
to the Bible and it can also mean chapter)

However Rashis point of view is that TORAH
ALWAYS means PRINCIPLES. So when a chapter
begins with TORAH it really means, NOT,
THIS IS THE CHAPTER ON MINCHAH but rather,
THESE ARE THE MINCHAH PRINCIPLES
