ACKNOWLEDGEMENT IS GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES - http://www.mechon-mamre-org/ For Hebrew Text of Bible - http://www.tachash.org/metsudah For English Rashi *2 We give some peachy examples illustrating the technique of overriding Rashi and giving a more plausible explanation. Rashi is then perceived as using the literary technique of exaggeration -- Rashi deliberately exaggerated the simple explanation in order to bring home a point. These postings are a must for anyone (novice or Rabbi) who is in to serious Rashi study. Whether you agree with me or not I clearly present several serious issues--each reader will take these issues and integrate them into their own style |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ The REST (MINCHAH) offerings are plant sacrifices that consist of -- flour - symbolizing our basic nourishment in life -- oil - symbolizing opulence--non-basic needs -- frankincense - symbolizing satisfaction The poor sin offering (Lv05) and the suspected adulteress sin offering (Nu05) are both Biblically prohibited from having oil or frankincense since they symbolize OPULENCE and SATISFACTION and this contradicts the spirit of a sin offering (SINNERS cannot have satisfaction and cannot appreciate opulence)*1

*1 A famous Rav Hirsch on Lv05 notes the emphasis in the verse ---------------------------------------------- The poor sin offering does not get frankincense BECUASE it is a sin offering (not because it is poor!) ---------------------------------------------- |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
For a complete study of the symbolic method see our essay http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm which presents in a compact form Rav Hirschs symbolism. This list approach towards symbolism was developed by him in his commentary. In the verses below OIL/FAT (S-M-N) and FRANKINCENSE are symbolic of OPULENCE and SAIETY*10
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH oil/fat incense MEANING SAIETY
Gn27-39 | You will have the OILY/FAT places
Lv05-11 | No OIL/FRANKINCENSE since this is a sin offering
Nu05-15 | No OIL/FRANKINCENSE since this is a sin offering
P104-15 | wine GLADDENS, oil BRIGHTENS, bread is FOUNDATION
SS01-03 | Your name is spilled(mentioned) like OIL
Jb29-06 | my infancy---I was bathed in CREAM in OIL
Dn11-24 | He comes in tranquillity and the FAT OF THE LAND
SS03-06 | Stately like a smoke column--with Myrr/FRANKINCENS
SS04-06 | I seek the MYRR mountains and INCENSE hills
|
||
*10 Our approach has been broad and mature based on lists of verses. Simply: OIL/FAT means OPULENCE and FRANKINCENSE means SAIETY. No one can deny this. But why then does Rashi say ------------------------------------------- Why no OIL? Because OIL is used to make OIL LAMPS which give LIGHT while the suspected adulteress sinned in DARKNESS ------------------------------------------- Did Rashi really approach the symbolism this way? Did he avoid all the above verses? I however think the proper approach is to maintain - Rashi did hold by the above lists - Rashi did believe that oil symbolizes opulence - BUt Rashi gave a cute pun--oil=light/adultery=dark - Rashis goals were NOT to explain; rather Rashis goals were to make something cute and punchy so that people would remember the overall meaning In arguing that Rashi took this approach I am trying to harmonize - the text of Rashi - the great lists of verses supporting Hirschs symbols I think the only was to harmonize these two is maintain that Rashi did believe in the list approach but gave punchy contrasts (light-dark) to make sure that things were remembered. The reader is invited to solve the contrast of Rashis language and the lists above in his own manner. |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Nu05-12 says as follows ----------------------------------- When a woman does the SIN-TET-HEY act - she descecrates - she sleeps with other men - she secludes with other men - she avoids her husbands warnings ----------------------------------- From context we infer that SIN-TET-HEY means some type of LOOSENESS. The list below confirms this

Verses showing contrast | PHYSICALLY DEVIATE/BEHAVE LOOSELY |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
We list all verses with the root SIN-TET-HEY. It doesnt just mean to LEAVE--rather it means to behave LOOSELY--
VERSE | TRANSLATION OF VERSE--s-t-h MEANS LOOSE
Nu05-12 | When a mans wife BEHAVES LOOSELY..adultery
Pr07-25 | Dont behave LOOSELY with her*1
Pr04-15 | Behave LOOSELY so you wont get involved*2
|
||
*1 Dont get involved *2 The full translation of Pr04-14:15 is -------------------------------------- Dont COME in the path of wicked Dont HIGHWAY with evil people Behave WILDY so you dont have to pass thru Behave LOOSELY from him so you can escape -------------------------------------- The parallel verses clearly describe more than DEVIATION--they describe behaving LOOSELY*10
|
||
*10 Rashi besides bringing the translation of BEHAVING LOOSELY (DEVIATING) also brings the pun between SHIN-TET-HEY and SIN-TET-HEY. SHIN-TET-HEY means FOOLISHLY while SIN-TET-HEY means BEHAVE LOOSELY. Hence the Rashi pun ----------------------------------------- No one sins (adultery) without first behaving FOOLISHLY. But the simple meaning of SIN-TET-HEY is DEVIATION ----------------------------------------- We can sum this up by saying that SIN-TET-HEY means BEHAVE LOOSELY. Rashi, as usual, simply gave a PUN to reinforce the meaning. |

VERSE: Nu05-13g
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ While many Rashis focus on MEANING and GRAMMAR certain Rashis focus on style--Rashis focus is whether the example mentioned in the verse should be interpreted BROADLY or LITERALLY For example: The verse Dt25-04 which states DONT MUZZLE AN OX WHILE IT IS MUZZLING is interpreted to mean that it is prohibited to muzzle ANY ANIMAL (not just an OX) while they are WORKING (working at muzzling or something else). In this case the verse is interpreted BROADLY. So too in No05-13g .....She slept with another man but had not been GRABBED Rashi interprets the word GRAB BROADLY---it is simply a typical means of RAPE. Further support for Rashis broad interpretation is obtained from Dt22-28:29 which explicitly links GRABBING to RAPE. Other examples of BROAD interpretation are presented in the lists below. VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi frequently focuses on MEANING and GRAMMAR. However some verses must be understood in light of sister verses which seem to contradict them. By aligning the contradictory verses we are forced to resolve them--this is frequently done by noticing 2 STAGES or 2 ASPECTS of some event Nu05-12:14 states the following about a women suspected of adultery --------------------------------- - The women behaves LOOSELY - she DESCECRATES - She SLEEPS with someone else - She SECLUDES with someone else - She does IMPURE things - She was not GRABBED (Raped) - The husband POSSESSES his wife ----------------- and she has done IMPURE things - OR the husband POSSESSES his wife ----------------- and she has not done IMPURE things ---------------------------------- On the one hand it looks like she committed adultery On the other hand it looks like she secludes with men improperly. WHich is it--ADULTERY or SECLUSION ? Rashi resolves the contradiction by looking at two stages of the suspicion. - In the first stage she DOES seclude but not necessaraly sin - In a later potential stage she might sin(commit adultery) Rashi concludes that the suspected-adulteress chapter is talking about a women who DOES SECLUDE improperly but is ONLY SUSPECTED of actual ADULTERY. The water ceremony then clears her

Contradictory verses | illustrating 2 stages |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
We present the contradictory verses in Nu05-12:14 and their resolution as 2 stages. Basically the verses should be read backwards -- The women secludes with men and this is improper -- Her husband then warns her against further improper seclusion -- However the women SECLUDES improperly after the warning -- (And we dont know if she sinned or not but we do know that) -- she descecrated her marriage by -- creating a potential situation where adultery was possible The 2 key ideas are to - translate ADULTERY as POTENTIAL ADULTERY - Identify the DESCECRATION of the marriage with IMPROPER SECLUSION
TEXT OF VERSES Nu05-12:14 | HOW THE VERSES ARE INTERPRETED
The women behaves LOOSELY | POTENTIAL*1 ADULTERY
she DESCECRATES | POTENTIAL ADULTERY
She SLEEPS with someone else | POTENTIAL ADULTERY*2
She SECLUDES with someone else | Actual ACT DONE
She does IMPURE things | Violates LAW OF SECULSION
She was not GRABBED (Raped) | Voluntary
The husband | Before this
-- POSSESSES his IMPURE wife OR | POSSESS*3=warns against seclusion
-- POSSESSES his NON-IMPURE wife | POSSESS*3=warns against seclusion
|
||
*1 There is a separate Rashi on this which we will do at a later date. This Rashi shows that many words can refer to the POTENTIAL of an act rather than the actual act. *2 There has to be the POTENTIAL for adultery So eg if she did not seclude for ENOUGH time to have an affair(eg she was in a locked room for 5 seconds) then we dont perform this ceremony *3 See http://www.RashiYomi.com/nu05-14b.htm where we show that the Hebrew root Kuph-Nun-Hey means POSSESS--eg warn his wife against seclusion. |
