SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain grammar the same way grammar textbooks do. A major function of grammar is the explanation of root conjugation.Rashi will typically only explain RARE conjugations EXAMPLE ------- The root Nun-Tzade-Hey has two weak letters - The Nun - The Hey The conjugation of Nun-2-Hey roots in Hifil is a rarity(There are only 2 other examples in the whole Bible). The typical form HIVDIL becomes HITZU Since N-Tz-H means to FIGHT, therefore in the causative, N-Tz-H means to INCITE (others to fight) Other verses confirm that DATAN & AVIRAM incited the congregation against God and Moses-Aaron A further list shows that the Hebrew relationship between N-Tz-H=BUD and FIGHT occurs in English also (TO BUD IN = TO FIGHT) | ||

We bring all Biblical examples of the CAUSATIVE of roots with two weak letters (PAST PLURAL 3rd Person). List is courtesy of Moshe Silbermans Grammatical Form Konkordance root 3070-d. LIST952c defends our translation of root Nun-Tzde-Hey as STICKUP/BUD-IN | |||||
VERSE | ROOT | ACTIVE | HIFIL | TRANSLATION OF VERSE | |
Gn19-11 | Nun-Caph-Hey | Injured | Hit | They HIT the intruders | |
1K11-04 | Nun-Teth-Hey | Deviate | lure | His wives LURED him after idols | |
Nu26-09c | Nun-Tzde-Hey | StickUp | Incite | When they INCITED people on Moses | |
|
|||||
*1 Rashi (Nu26-09a and Nu26-09b) in effect cites OTHER VERSES to confirm that indeed INCITATION occured - against Moses/Aaron Authority(Nu16-02:03) - against God (Nu16-13:14) That is DATAN and AVIRAM tried to get the Jewish people to ignore Moses authority and to Doubt Gods promise of bringing them to the Promised land |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||||
We bring all five meanings of the root Nun-Tzade-Hey. We posit a unified meaning of SOMETHING STICKING OUT. From this UNIFIED meaning of STICKING OUT we get FEATHER, BUD, DESOLATE(Covered with BUDS/WEEDS) FIGHT (BUD-IN to others business) and INCITE This list illustrates some subtleties in Commentary controversy on meaning. | ||||
VERSE | GRAMMAR | MEANING | RELATION TO STICKING OUT | |
Lv01-16 | Noun | FEATHER | Something STICKING out | |
Song6-11 | Noun | BUD/SPROUT | Something STICKING out | |
-------- | ------- | ----------- | ------------------------------------ | |
Jr02-15 | Passive | DESOLATE | Ground covered with WEEDS/STICK-OUTS*1 | |
Ex21-22 | Passive | FIGHT | Receive STICKUPS( BUDDING IN)*2 | |
Nu26-09 | Causative | INCITE | Cause others to STICKUP/BUD IN*2 | |
|
||||
*1 The equation of DESOLATION = BUDDING WEEDS is due to the Radacks father. This perception allows us to give a unified meaning to Nun-Tzade-Hey Thus Radacks Father would translate YOUR LAND IS DESOLATE as YOUR LAND IS BUDDED (With weeds) *2 It may seem SILLY to call a FIGHT a STICKUP (The idea being that FIGHTS use FISTS(Things STICKING OUT) and come from people STICKING THEIR NOSE or BUDDING IN to things that are not their business. Note the English pun agreement: BUD=BUD-IN::NTzH=BUD::FIGHT. Such agreements give credibility to our unified approach |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain the meaning of words the same way the dictionary does. Rashi had a variety of methods to explain word meaning. Sometimes Rashi uses two verses speaking about the same topic with multiple words. Rashi is then justified in inferring that these multiple words all mean (nearly) the same thing EXAMPLE ------- Nu26-10a The Fire consumption of 250 Korach rebels was a NAYS Nu17-03 The remnants from the fire consumption was a SYMBOL Nu17-05 The remnants from the fire consumption was a MEMORIAL These OTHER VERSES confirm that NAYS has a meaning of SYMBOL or MEMORIAL. This is also consistent with the word NAYS, which means a HIGH BANNER that acts as a focal point | ||

Verse pairs which | Illumine unknown meaning |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||||
We present a list of verses where the meaning of words in one verse are illumined by the usage of these words in other verses. The classical example is the word CALF which occurs several times in the Torah(eg Gn15-09). We know a CALF is a YOUNG OX/BULL but we dont know HOW YOUNG. The details are gives by Lv09-07d which shows that CALFS are 1 year (And this derivation is accepted legally) | ||||
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE | OTHER VRSE | MEANING | |
Nu26-10a | BANNER fire on rebels | Nu17-03 | SYMBOL*3 | |
Dt01-19a | GREAT & AWESOME desert | Dt08-15 | with snakes | |
Ex13-20a | SUCCOTH*1 | Nu33-05 | RMSYTH->SCCTH | |
Gn15-09 | CALF | Lv09-07d | 1 year old | |
Ex21-17b | HIS BLOOD ON HIM | Lv20-27 | StoneTo Death | |
Ex14-24b | CONFUSION attacks | 1S07-10 | by NOISE | |
Ex30-13e | GAYRAH | 1S02-36 | CURRENCY UNIT | |
Ex30-18d | Washpan near ALTAR | Ex40-27:29 | COPPER ALTAR | |
Nu01-02a | Count Jews by FAMILY | Nu01 | Count by TRIB | |
Nu01-02c | Count Jews by HEADS | Ex38-26*2 | COIN per HEAD | |
|
||||
*1 Ex13-20 Jews journeyed from Succoth after Exodus Ex12-27 Exodus: Jews go from Raamsayth to Succoth Nu33-05 Exodus, Then Raamsayth, THen Succoth The point is that Nu33-05 makes it clear that there were 3 places - Exodus FROM Egypt - TO Raamsayth - TO Succoth. Ex13-20 only mentions 2 of the places Ex12-27 makes it sound like they left EGYPT, ie they left RAAMSAYTH. It is in fact common for places to have multiple names. So Nu33-05 illumines that there were 3 distinct places *2 Also see Ex30-11:16 which prohibits DIRECTLY counting people. Instead, we must count the COINS of each person and from this infer the total count. *3 Nu17-05 further illumines by calling it a MEMORIAL Thus we have SYMBOL MEMORIAL BANNER. Since NAYS means BANNER it refers to anything that ATTRACTS attention such as SYMBOLS or MIRACLES |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Many Rashis focus on internal items of a verse such as MEANING and GRAMMAR. However some Rashis focus on external comparisons with other verses. This is particularly exciting when 2 verses contradict or complement each other. We have found five methods of resolving contradictory or complementary verses. EXAMPLE #1 ---------- -Nu16-32:33 clearly states that KORACH and FOLLOWERS died -Nu26-11a clearly states that KORACHS sons did not die We resolve this contradiction using the method of 2 STAGES -First Korachs children went into Hell but -Then they repented We bring further support below EXAMPLE #2 ---------- -Nu26-53a,Nu26-55 clearly state that the EXODUS people(ie people who actually went out inherited Israel) -Nu26-54 clearly states that the EXODUS descendants inherited Israel We resolve this contradiction using the method of 2 stages -Each descendant received ONE unit in Israel -Each Family (EXODUS person) is therefore allocated all family units -The descendants now divide equally by family A simple numerical example is presented in the footnotes | ||

Verse pairs illustrating | 2 stages of a process |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||||
We present verse pairs which seem to contradict each other The contradiction is resolved by viewing the 2 verses as 2 stages of the same process. | ||||
VERSE-1 | VERSE-2 | WHY 2 | HOW THE TWO TEXTS ARE COMBINED | |
Ex15-01 | Ex15-04 | Stages | Egyptians THROWN UP;THEN SHOT down to sea | |
Ex16-13 | Nu11-09 | Stages | 1st Dew bed; then MANNA; THEN dew blanket | |
Nu08-24 | Nu04-03 | Stages | Levites LEARN Temple at 25;THEN serve at 30 | |
Nu16-32 | Nu26-11a | Stages | Korach sons 1st punished; then repented*1 | |
Nu26-54 | Nu26-55a | Stages | Children inherit units;Parents give equally*10 | |
|
||||
*1 Nu16-32 and Nu16-33 together imply that KORACH AND ALL FOLLOWING HIM DIED ALIVE BY FIRE AND EARTHQUAKE This contradicts Nu26-11 that the sons of Korach did not die Note that Psalms 45-49 were written by the SONS OF KORACH showing that they repented | ||||
|
||||
*10 Here is a simple numerical example Assume 3 people in Egypt - Bob - Dan and David Brothers Assume - Bob has 1 child - Dan has 1 child - David has 2 children So GENERATION1(GEN1) has 3 units (Bob,Dan David) And GEN2 has 4 units (1+1+2) We now have 3 stages STAGE 1 ------- Each GEN2 person gets same number of units (Say 2 units) So Bobs child --2 units -- Dans child --2 units -- Davids-------4 units to 2 children STAGE 2 ------- Now the units are coalesced at the family (GEN1) level - Bob has 2 units(Since he has one child with 2 units) - Dan-David has 6 units (Dans child 2 units and Davids 4) STAGE 3 ------- - Bob gives his 2 units back to his child - Dan-David give there 6 units equally to children so -- Dans child receives 3 units -- Davids 2 children receive 1.5 units each (Total of 3) Here is a time map -------------------------------------------------------------- EGYPT(GEN1) CHILDREN STAGE1 STAGE2 STAGE3 -------------- ---------- ----------- ------------ ------------ Bob 1 child 2/8 2/8 2/8 @child Dan-brother 1 child 2/8 6/8 brothers 3/8 @child David-brother 2 child 4/8 6/8 Brothers 3/8 @2 child --------------------------------------------------------------- Although this may seem complicated it fulfills the 2 verses - The actual exodus people from Egypt inherit - The descendants determine inheritance |
