*1 ITS UP The online Rashi lookup Select a Book,Chapter,Verse and get Rashi online - Hebrew Verse - English Rashi - RashiYomi comments The Bug in the online Hebrew-English Rashi was fixed Please visit http://www.RashiYomi.com/ and select a verse We expect to improve this signifcantly over the next few months so send your suggestions. ACKNOWLEDGEMENT IS GIVEN TO THE FOLLOWING WEBSITES - http://www.mechon-mamre-org/ For Hebrew Text of Bible - http://www.tachash.org/metsudah For English Rashi *2 We give some peachy examples illustrating the technique of overriding Rashi and giving a more plausible explanation. Rashi is then perceived as using the literary technique of exaggeration -- Rashi deliberately exaggerated the simple explanation in order to bring home a point. These postings are a must for anyone (novice or Rabbi) who is in to serious Rashi study. Whether you agree with me or not I clearly present several serious issues--each reader will take these issues and integrate them into their own style |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain word meanings the same way a dictionary does. There are a variety of vehicles by which Rashi explains word meanings. One particular vehicle is the clarification of synonym nuances. Three words might have almost the same meaning-- but Rashi shows the particular nuances of each one. EXAMPLE ------- - Both Chet-Kuph and Shin-Pay-Tet refer to REGULATIONS - Chet-Kuph means regulations INTRINSIC to an item - Shin-Pay-Tet means regulations governing RELATIONSHIPS As a simple example - Laws of theft govern RELATIONSHIPS with others--S-P-T - Laws of ritual impurity govern the soul---------Ch-K - Regulations relating Passover,Matzah & Herbs----S-P-T Since they govern relations between offering and other items - Regulations governing Passover sacrifice are----Ch-K They govern the items intrinsically needed by the animal (Such as age, lack of blemish etc) See the footnotes below for a lively discussion on all the confusion that has arisen from these terms | ||

Lists of roots/verses | dealing with REGULATIONS |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | |||
We list verses illustrating the basic thesis that - CHOK refer to regulations INTRINSIC to an item while - SHPHAT refer to regulations RELATING items to others*10 | |||
ROOT | VERSE | Laws discussed-are they RELATIONAL/INTRINSIC | |
S P T | Ex21 | Laws governing social RELATIONSHIPS*1 | |
S P T | Nu09-13 | Laws RELATING Pesach sac to other items*2 | |
S P T | 2K01-07 | How does this person coming RELATE/BEHAVE*3 | |
S P T | Ex18-22 | JUDGES judge disputes between people | |
S P T | Dt18-03 | This is what the priests TAKE*7 | |
----- | ------- | --------------------------------------------- | |
Ch K | Nu19-01 | Laws regulating purity of SOUL | |
Ch K | Is22-16 | ...who STAMPS in the cliffs a nest*4 | |
Ch K | Pr30-08 | Give me, God, my DAILY-BREAD*5 | |
Ch K | Lv18-04 | Abstain from sexual excesses*6 | |
Ch K | Gn47-22 | This is the TAX for Priests*7 | |
|
|||
*1 Laws like theft, torts, slaves etc govern human-human interaction *2 Rashis point is that some Passover laws are INTRINSIC to the animal while other laws deal with the RELATIONSHIP with other PASSOVER ITEMS -- Passover offerings must be a YEAR, UNBLEMISHED (These are intrinsic laws) -- Passover offerings are eaten WITH Matzoh and bitter herbs (These are laws governing relationships) *3 Literally HOW DOES THIS RUNNER RUN/BEHAVE (In other words How does he RELATE to other people) Here the root SPT does not refer to JUSTICE but rather SOCIAL INTERACTION *4 Here ChK does not mean LAW but to STAMP (Because the Judge stamps laws). Also because ENGRAVING and STAMPING in stone makes something INTRINSIC to the stone *5 Here ChK does not refer to laws but rather daily needs or to use our lingo OUR INTRINSIC NEEDS (How much bread do we really need) *6 Sexual excesses (eg marrying ones sister) does not intefer (immediately) with our social relationships. Rather over a period of time they corrupt our soul. These laws are intrinsic to our spiritual nature *7 Cf these two verses which both refer to the rights of priests to receive items from the nation (Dt18-03 Gn47-22). In one case the law is - RELATIONAL-- the person offers a sacrifice but must remember the priest who takes certain organs In the other case the law is - INTRINSIC--Egyptian priests received a 20% stipend This stipend was independent of any relation with the people | |||
|
|||
*10 Traditionally Chok has been translated as NON-RATIONAL while SPHT is translated as social laws which are rational. Such a translation contradicts the verses above eg GIVE ME MY IRRATIONAL BREAD (vs INTRINSIC DAILY BREAD) or PHAROH GAVE THE PRIESTS AN IRRATIONAL (vs an INTRINSIC)20% TAX. Similarly 2K01-07 WhAT IS THE manner OF THE PERSON RUNNING UP TO YOU does not refer to a rational social manner (since the person might have a rude manner)--rather the word SFHT refers to how things relate. So bottom line: Chok means INTRINSIC LAWS -- LAWS governing the intrinsic being. Rashi on Nu19-02 talks about these laws as being the source of ridicule by the nations of the world--but this is not because they are irrational--rather it is because it is traditionally hard to see the needs of an INTRINSIC law (eg What would be so terrible if a brother and sister on an island married each other--how is their inner soul harmed---but the law is not irrational just something very deeply needed) |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 main goals is to explain grammar One issue of grammar is the order in which compound sentence components should be listed. The general rules are that - if the Bible uses different orders all items are equal (eg Abraham Isaac Jacob vs Jacob Isaac Abraham--there all same) - if the Bible always uses the same order it reflects importance (eg Moses Aaron indicates Moses had higher prophecy than Aaron) - Special cases arise: Eg Gn33-02: Jacobs favorite wives were placed in the least vulnerable position; Jacob went first to protect them (The same way Israeli generals go out first) A further example ----------------- Sometimes the verb DO is used with HUMAN SOCIAL LAWS while WATCH(MAKE ENACTMENTS) is used with SPIRITUAL LAWS (CHOK). Sometimes however the order is reversed. We conclude that both DOING and WATCHING apply to all laws(Theya are equal) | ||

This list comes from the Midrash Rabbah(First 3 examples from the Midrash and the last 2 were supplied by me). RULE: If a compound sentence item is listed in different orders then the Bible thinks they are each important. Thus the 3 Patriarchs are listed in different orders and hence are equally important. If compound sentence items are ALWAYS listed in the same order then they reflect a higher important of the 1st mentioned item. | |||||

*1 Machlah, Noah, Chaglah, Milkah, Tirzah (Nu26-33, Nu27-01 Nu36-11 and Jos17-3). The letters M N C M T refer to their first initials *2 Moses is always first since he surpassed Aaron in prophecy Cf Lv11-01 Lv13-01 Lv14-33 Lv15-01 Nu04-01 Nu04-17 *3 Rashi of course is not just referring to verb order(DO WATCH) but to VERB-NOUN linkage (DO Justice|Spiritual Laws WATCH Spiritual|Justice law). By interchanging order and verb-noun linkage we conclude that all activities DO/WATCH must apply to all commandment classes JUSTICE and SPIRITUAL laws. See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/nu03-07a.htm for a full discussion on how WATCH technically means PROFESSIONAL STANDARDS FOR COMMANDMENTS Note the subtlety in Rashi--Rashi is NOT just juxtaposing 2 verses---Rather Rashi is juxtaposing MANY verses with DO|WATCH and JUSTICE|SPIRITUAL laws...the overall conclusion is that order changes in MANY verses and hence all the ACTS and COMMANDMENTS classes are equal. Such an approach to Rashi (Looking at MANY VERSES vs TWO) enriches our Rashi appreciation |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ One of Rashis 6 methods in explaining Biblical exegesis is to use the ALIGNMENT method. In the ALIGNMENT method we align almost identical verses, word for word. The minor differences in these verses illumines nuances EXAMPLE ------- Both Lv18-05 and Lv20-08 speak about observing Gods commandments. Aligning the verses 3 find 3 differences -- Only one verse speaks about observing ALL commandments -- Only one verse says that GOD SANCTIFIES us -- One verse emphasizes that we are to live by the Torah So the simplest explanation is that -- we must do ALL commandments except when our LIFE is in danger...for then we need not SANCTIFY Gods names by becoming a holy martyr...rather we must refrain from observance to save our life | ||

Lv18-05 | Watch --- my statutes | my justices | that people live by | I am God | |
Differs | *1 | *2 | *3 | *4 | |
|
|||||
*1 So there are times when you dont watch ALL commandments-- namely when your life is in danger *2 The Bible is giving atmosphere and background. It never happens that someone threatens your life if you dont observe. Rather first there is decay and corruption in society(Social laws are not observed). Then people start making fun of those RELIGIOUS people--this leads to threats and the possibility of martyrdom *3 There is an emphasis that DOING the commandments should not contradict life..so if your life is in danger you should rather violate the commandments *4 God usually sanctifies us with his commandments...people look at the Jews and admire them for their inner spiritual strength. But there are times when non-jews dont admire us and we are asked to die for the commandments. In such a case it is preferable to violate the commandments.*10 | |||||
|
|||||
*10 Beautiful and elegant. But Rashi does not say this!!!!! Rather Rashi cites the Sifray that if a person does not do the commandments in this world then (s)he ends up doing them in the next world. My own thoughts are as follows - Clearly Rashi did not ignore the almost explicit implications of the aligned verses - Clearly Rashi and the Sifray did not ignore or disagree with the laws that we dont incur martyrdom but rather violate the laws if threatened - How then do we interpret Rashi and the Sifray. Simple! Rashi and Sifray are ADDING to the known law---they tell us if we violate the commandments and are killed then we will end up observing these commandments in the next world. Thus we see Rashi and SUPPLEMENTING the text--we are not contradicting Rashi rather we are making him consistent with the Biblical verses and seeing added nuances.*11 *11 In passing I should mention the well known fact that there are 3 exceptions when we must incur martyrdom rather than violate the laws: They are a) Murder b) incest c) idolatry. That is if threatened to commit adultery or die then mem must die |

VERY BRIEF SUMMARY ------------------ Rashi frequently teaches MEANING and GRAMMAR. However he also uses other techniques. One such technique is the supplement of verse meaning using CROSS REFERENCES That is Rashi cites OTHER VERSES which give further insights to the verse on hand. EXAMPLE 1 --------- Nu03-11:13 provides a good example. We are told that God took the Levites in place of the firstborn. But we arent told why? Rather we are told why God took the firstborn (Because God smote the firstborn of Egypt and spared his own firstborn). But why did God replace them with the Levites. Therefore Rashi taking information from OTHER VERSES shows us that the Levites were selected over the FirstBorn since during the sin of the GOlden calf the firstborn sinned but the levites did not sin. Therefore did God chose them. Our humble job on this email list is to collect and compactly display those verses supporting this EXAMPLE 2 --------- Another good example occurs in Nu08-05:22--here we have a summary verse---MOSES,AARON and the JEWS DID AS COMMANDED. Rashi simply tell us what each party (MOSES, AARON, JEWS) were commanded. | ||

The following five verses/chapters deal with - The Levites not sinning during the idolatrous Golden calf episode - The Levites therefore replacing the 1stborn as serving God - Originally the 1stborn offered sacrifices and were priests - This is because the 1stborn Jews were spared plague of 1stborn The chapters/verses below deal with a context of the Golden calf or Levites | ||

In this list we show how the Torah uses a SUMMARY sentence to indicate the duties of several parties. Rashis tasks is to gather the individual tasks of each party. A summary list is presented in Nu08-20 The summary list refers to 3 people a) Moses b) Aaron and c) The Jews. Thus Rashi uses the TECHNIQUE of OTHER VERSES and CROSS REFERENCING to explain the SUMMARY technique | |||
