ANNOUNCEMENT NEW: 1 Year Project on FIGURES OF SPEECH*1
COMMENTS
*1 Many of the Rashi rules we present, particularly
the Rashi rules on WORD MEANINGS have well known
technical meanings in English. I refer to such techniques
as METAPHOR, SIMILY, ANTITHESIS... There are about 100
such techniques.

The fundamental novelty of this email letter is the
use of LISTS to justify techniques. But there are
already many LISTS in the literature to justify
FIGURES of SPEECH.

Hence over the next year we shall review these
FIGURES OF SPEECH. We hope by the end of the year
to cover all methods and illustrate them with Rashis

Today we continue this series by giving examples
of METONOMY and SYNECODOCHE. (These terms will
be explained below).*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES
*10
In passing, this series - on figures of speech -
does not contradict our fundamental thesis that
there are 30 Rashi techniques. For the techniques
of WORD MEANIGNS and GRAMMAR refer to ANY technique
that is UNIVERSALLY accepted in all languages on
WORD MEANING and GRAMMAR. Since all languages use
metaphor, simile, metonomy etc we are justified
in calling these examples of MEANING and GRAMMAR

However there are 28 other Rashi techniques that
have nothing to do TRADITIONAL GRAMMAR (For
example the use of OTHER VERSES, or the Rabbi
Ishmael Style rules (Which are unique to the
Bible--since other languages have other rules
of Style))

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
One of Rashis 6 major goals is to explain meaning
the same way a dictionary explains meaning. Rashi
had a variety of vehicles to explain meaning.

One very general method of creating meaning is
called METONOMY. METONOMY refers to identifying
a meaning with any RELATED meaning.

EXAMPLES
--------
- The PEN is mightier than the SWORD

The reference of course is to PEN-RELATED ACTIVITIES
(such as books, articles) and to SWORD-RELATED
ACTIVITIES (Such as killing and plundering).

- (Amos04-06) God will give you CLEAN TEETH

(The reference being to the lack of food that
is RELATED to clean teeth).

- Gn19-08 dont harm them because they came under my ROOF

Here, ROOF refers to HOUSE and HOUSE refers to PROTECTION
PROTECTION is HOUSE-related while HOUSE is ROOF-related
(This is a double METONOMY or a METALEPSIS)

Dont get bogged down in the terms...just remember
the simple fact that any word can refer to items
RELATED to it(Like ROOF refers to HOUSE)

In todays posting below we give
METONOMYs of the word HOLY

EXAMPLES
--------
- HOLY can refer to the holy-related TEMPLE
- HOLY COINS means COINS related to TEMPLE activities
- They carry the HOLY, means TEMPLE-RELATED objects
- Make them HOLY, means enable them to legally deal
with HOLY/TEMPLE related objects*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Some authors distinguish between
METONOMY and SYNECDOCHE(METONOMY is ANYTHING
related while SYNECDOCHE refers to WHOLE-PART
relationships--eg. ROOF-HOUSE)

We however ignore this. So we use METONOMY
to refer to ANYTHING RELATED (whether it
is metonomical, synecdochal or metalepsical)

Just remember that METONOMY=RELATED and think
of ROOF=HOUSE or HAND=PERSON (eg GIVE MY HAND
IN MARRIAGE)
LIST871a

A list of verses where the word HOLY is used menotomically--
that is the word HOLY means HOLY RELATED. In the verses below
the CAPPED words are a translation of the word HOLY. For
example, in the first row, Lv27-25 says that dedications
should be in HOLY COINS while we have translated this
as TEMPLE RELATED COINS (that is coins weighing 20 GAYRAH
which are used in the computation of Temple dedications) The
coins themselves have no holiness or sanctity.

Ex29-06a The HOLY crown=Tzizth garment*6 Atone on TMPL items
------ -------------------------- ----------------
Ex29-33d To train them to TEMPLIZE them*7*14 Fit to work in TMPL
COMMENTS
*1 If a person dedicates his worth to the temple --
eg he states MAY MY WORTH BE DEDICATED TO THE TEMPLE--
then he pays a standard worth using special silver
coins (defined in this verse as equal to 20 GAYRAHS)

Hence these silver coins are TEMPLE RELATED(that is
related to TEMPLE procedures). Thus the phrase
HOLY COIN is a METONOMY referring to this special
type of silver coin

*2 HOLY CLOTHES should be simply translated as TEMPLE-RELATED
cloths--that is, the special priestly clothes worn by
the priests during Temple services.*11

*3 All these examples refer to the TEMPLE BUILDING or
TEMPLE GROUND. Thus the sacrifices had to be eaten
on TEMPLE GROUNDS. Similarly the sockets were used
in the TEMPLE BUILDING. *12

*4 In these verses HOLY is used METONOMICALLY to mean
anything TEMPLE related. Thus the phrase
- bears the TEMPLE RELATED objects- means that
this family transported the Holy parts of the temple

- Similarly the SIN OF TEMPLE RELATED OBJECTS means
exactly that--any sin having to do with temple items
For example: selling temple objects or eating temple
sacrifices etc

*5 These sacrifices were eaten on Temple grounds
(See 2 verses earlier Ex29-31) Hence they
are HOLY (TEMPLE-RELATED since they may be
eaten only on the temple)*13

*6 It would appear that the TZITZ is called HOLY
metonomically since according to Ex28-38 it
atones on the SINS OF THE HOLY OFFERINGS. Hence
the TZITZ is RELATED TO HOLY OBJECTS*10

*7 Of course the word TEMPLIZE is a coined word
The proper English word is SANCTIFY but I wanted
to catch the flavor of TEMPLE RELATED.

In this verse TO TEMPLIZE (MAKE THEM HOLY)
is a metonomy; the procedures are inauguration
procedures to ALLOW THE PRIESTS TO OFFICIALLY
SERVE IN THE TEMPLE -- hence these procedures
enable TEMPLE-RELATED ACTIVITY--they TEMPLIZE

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 Ex28-36:38 states that the TZITZ is placed on
the PRIESTS FOREHEAD while Ex29-06
states PLACE THE HAT ON THE PRIESTS HEAD AND
THE HOLY CROWN ON THE HAT. Therefore the
HOLY CROWN must be referring to the TZITZ.

Rashi uses here the technique of OTHER VERSES

*11 Rashi adds a further nuance of TEMPLE CLOTHES--
CLOTHES bought with TEMPLE FUNDS--however the
basic idea of a metonomy - TEMPLE RELATED, is
present

*12 Rashi gives further details
-- eg the sacrifices were eaten not anywhere
on Temple grounds but in the Temple courtyard
Again this detail does not contradict the
basic idea of a metonomy - TEMPLE RELATED

*13 The actual verse states as follows
---------------------------------------
Let the priests eat these sacrifices
since they atone--and thereby the
priestly training will be completed
and the priests will be trained to
officially serve---
--
and no non-priest shall eat these
sacrifices because they are TEMPLE-RELATED
---------------------------------------

From the last phrase Rashi infers that
any sacrifice eaten on temple grounds
could not be eaten by a non-priest
(Rashi so infers because the verse
gives a general reason--no NON-PRIEST
should eat them BECAUSE THEY ARE TEMPLE
RELATED)

*14 See LIST050d for a list of transformations
of nouns to verses (eg TO HAMMAR, TO SCREW,
TO FAN, TO FLY...) Each of these
transformations is MENOTONOMICAL (eg
TO HAMMAR means to do a HAMMAR RELATED
ACTIVITY; TO FLY means to do a FLY-RELATED
ACTIVITY (the reference being to the house
fly)
