*1 I have just completed, using over 60 hours of computing time, a detailed analysis of alignment. The Rashis from this alignment will be presented over the next few months. AND...they are all peaches, beauties and punchy We start easy, during June and July with the 299 verse pairs that have 10 or more words in common. Stay tuned for a year of Midrashic insights A sophisticated version of this will be presented at a Jewish studies conference next September in Nebraska. Here are some nifty examples: - Do you know the real reason Chazal knew Chur was murdered - Why do Chazal think Shimon married Dinah after her rape *2 I have just completed a detailed electronicization of Rashi. I will be giving daily STAT de JOURs. All statistics are based on the Version IId of the DAVKA Rashi CD Rom. Todays stat de Jour: There are 7702 Rashis in all of Chumash (Not 7800 as I had previously thought) *3 Rashi sometimes looks like he is deriving his thoughts from one aspect of the verse but deeper analysis shows his thoughts come elsewhere |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- By aligning Ex32-01 and Ex32-23 we see 1 extra word which is emphasized: Aaron is told to GET UP and then make a golden calf. This hints that he was in a state of mourning--in fact Chur is never mentioned in the Bible again & we assume he is murdered. Further support is given by the use of the word BRAWL later on | ||

*1 The alignment shows an emphasis on the phrase GET UP. This phrase is used when mourners get up. There is supportive evidence that Aaron was mourning - The Bible describes the scene as a BRAWL Ex32-18 - Chur is never mentioned again in the Bible although he is listed as a leader(Ex24-14) - Aarons behavior (that he made the idol) seems to indicate he was acting under fear So Rashi is SImple--Chur was murdered in the Brawl and Aaron was mourning him |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- The 12 tribes donated identical gifts to the Tabernarcle. The donation of the gifts is recorded 12 times using almost identical language. An alignment of the chapters shows (a) Nacshon PERSONALLY donated his gift (not from tribal funds) (b) There was bickering on the order; so Moses gave the order by prophecy (c) Nethanayl was extremely gifted and suggested that these gifts be given | ||

*1 *5 *7 This is abbreviated for reasons of space. The actual text is ----------------------------------------------- the offering of HIS OFFERING on day Nachson... ----------------------------------------------- So there is an emphasis on - HIS OFFERING - he is not called PRINCE - he did it for the TRIBE not FROM the children Rashi-is-Simple and explains that NACSHON volunteered his gift from his own funds. The other tribes used funds from the PEOPLE of their tribe *2*3*8 We list 3 of the 12 days. On each day a separate prince offered *4*6 We see two differences by the Tribe of Yissachar -- Nethanayl is called the prince OF Yissachar while other leaders are called prince TO The word OF denotes intrinsicness -- It is emphasized that Nethanayl OFFERED Rashi-is-Simple and suggests that the other leaders were VOTED leaders while Nethanayl was BORN for leadership. It therefore seems reasonable that Nethanayl was a leader of leaders and suggested that the princes bring gifts. Rashi is in fact supported by the verse that the Tribe of Yissachar was known for its scholarship but I believe the main argument is as outlined above*10 | ||||||||
|
||||||||
*10 After making these distinctions I found confirmation for the OF-INTRINSIC distinction in the Torah Temimah who cites various obscure commentaries. |

The list below gives DEFICIENTLY SPELLED words. An English example might be TABLE-TABL or TABLE-TBLE Each word in the list below is deliberately misspelled in the Bible in order to give the effect of a pun. For example, row 1: OLY means PERHAPS but when spelled DEFICIENTLY spells TO ME. So Eliezer (The servant of Abraham) who was sent to get a wife for his masters son says: MAYBE(OLY) SHE WONT GO WITH ME but secretly hopes: TO ME(ALY)--that is he hopes that Abraham will marry his (Eliezers) daughter We explain the current Rashi Nu07-19a in the footnote. VERSE | WORD | MEANS | MISSPELLED WORD MEANS | |
Nu07-19a | HIKRV | Offer | God COMMANDED order*1 | |
Gn24-39a | OLY | MABYE | TO ME(Wanted for his daughter | |
Ex03-15a | LOLAM | Forever | CONCEAL my name | |
Ex23-02c | RV | Dispute | Don't disagree with RABBI | |
Gn08-21a | MnuRaV | Youth | Mischief From WINING TIME(Infancy) | |
Gn16-05b | BNyIch | Between | Between me & feminine you (Sarah) | |
Gn01-14b | MOROTH | Stars | CURSES created on Wednesday | |
Dt02-33a | BNV | Children | His HEIR | |
Gn06-02b | TOVOTH | Good | GOOD LOOKING | |
Nu22-05f | MMLI | Opposite | OPPOSING ME | |
Gn18-01c | YOSHAV | Sit | Sit up and down(in respect) | |
Gn19-01c | YOSHAV | Sit | Sat in nation;Sit on "bench" | |
Gn23-10a | YSHV | Sit | Sat in nation;Sat on "bench" | |
|

*1 The verse says HE OFFERED HIS OFFERING but the verse puns COMMANDED. Rashi suggests that the tribes disputed on who would offer first second etc. So Moses sought Divine orders and was COMMANDED on the order |

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Dt14-02 and Dt07-06 both mention that the Jews a) are a holy nation b) God chose them to do his work. In one verse the two phrases are in opposition: (1)YOU ARE A HOLY NATION: (i.e.)GOD CHOSE YOU But in the 2nd verse the two phrases are connected (2)YOU ARE A HOLY NATION and GOD CHOSE YOU. This contrast (Opposition vs Conjunction) leads Rashi to see 2 reasons for holiness: (1)Because we do Gods work and (2) Both because of our doing Gods work and the merit of the Patriarchs. | ||

|
||||
*1 *3 These phrases are the same *2 So in one verse the HOLINESS and CHOSENESS are COMBINED (and) while in the other verse they are EQUATED IN OPPOSITION(HOLY: ie CHOSEN) Rashi therefore infers there are 2 (not 1) reason for the HOLINESS - We were CHOSEN to do Gods will - Some other reason--presumably the oath to the patriarchs |

(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||
SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- We align Dt15-05 and Dt28-01 both of which speak about the Jews being blessed with being the top nation if they do Gods will The alignment shows two subtle differences (a) If the Jews AT LEAST do the ONE commandment in the chapter (waiving loans every 7 years) then God will eliminate poverty;but (b) if the Jews do the MANY other commandments then they will be rewarded with being the TOP nation | ||

2 verses discussing | Rewards for observance |
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03 | ||||
We align Dt15-05:06 with Dt28-01. In the interests of space we have omitted some extra phrases. We have translated RAK as meaning not ONLY but rather meaning AT LEAST. We have explored the meaning of RAK in several verses and find this the best translation (see http://www.RashiYomi.com/gn20-11a.htm) | ||||
VERSE | PHRASE1 | PHRASE2 | PHRASE3 | |
Dt15-05 | There will be no poor | IF YOU AT LEAST | do this Commandment | |
Dt28-01 | --------------------- | --------------- | ------------------- | |
------- | --------------------- | --------------- | ------------------- | |
Dt15-06 | You-ll reign over nations | IF you at least | do THIS commandment | |
Dt28-01 | You-ll be top nation | IF | do THESE commandments | |
Differs | *1 *3 | *1 | *2 | |
|
||||
*1 So if you just do THIS commandment (The chapter speaks about waiving loans every 7 years) then God will prevent poverty (But (see next note) if you do many (THESE)commandments you will also be made the TOP nation) *2 And then (once you are rewarded with no poverty and decide to) do many commandments(commandmentS vs commandment) and you will be rewarded with being the TOP nation *3 One verse says REIGN OVER NATIONS while the other verse says be TOP nation. So one verse simply gives a good example of the general idea of being TOP nation. |
