COMMENTS
*1 Some age old problems in Biblical interpretation are
- What is the SIMPLE meaning of the text?
- What is a HOMILETIC meaning?
- Are there methods to distinguish between them?
The postings in this digest give clear criteria to
- identify good homily
- select the one meaning that is true and fits the text

These postings are a must for anyone wanting to pursue
serious and mature Bible study. These postings will
benefit anyone-- from a beginner to an experienced
Rabbi-- in sifting thru competing Biblical interpretations
Clear criteria are presented which will enable a reader
to identify interpretative homily vs the simple meaning

*2 4 years ago hurricane Floyd caused a blackout in Baltimore
Despite the blackout I scurried around Baltimore till I
found a web server that was open. In anticipation of
any problems from Isabell I am sending out Rashi-is-Simple
today.

I am proud of the fact that in the 5 years I have been
running Rashi is Simple I have produced and sent out 2
issues a week 50 weeks a year (Except for Passover and
Succoth).

*3 In the five years of Rashi is Simple
- we have explained over 40% of all Rashis on Chumash.
- We have uncovered 30 Rashi principles
- We have a thriving website & 2 email groups
- We have produced several wonderful essays
- We have produced a workbook and essays on the Rashi rules
As the New year comes we are planning to
- produce a 30 part serial on the 30 Rashi rules
- Modernize our lists with a Dewey Decimal system approach
- Continue our series on Literary figures of speech
Completion of all Rashis is expected on Chanukah of 2010

SUCCINT SUMMARY
---------------
Very often Rashi will clarify meaning by finding
supportive interpretation from other verses.

EXAMPLE 1 Dt32-01a
------------------
The verse speaks about HEAVEN and EARTH listening.
We cite about 10 other verses where REWARD and
PUNISHMENT for sins and commandments are dependent
on HEAVEN and EARTH. Hence we are justified in
interpreting HEAVEN and EARTH as referring to
reward and punishment (eg lack of rain etc)

EXAMPLE 2 Dt32-12
-----------------
The verse speaks about God helping the Jewish people
without help from other gods. By citing other verses
we see that reference to deities is one means of
indicating conquest--hence the verse refers to the
autonomy of the Jews in conquering their enemies without
a need for alliances. (cf Ju11-23, 2K18-33)

A list of verses showing that HEAVEN
and EARTH are associated with REWARD
and PUNISHMENT. eg Dt11-14 and Dt11-17
state that if you observe commandments
you will have rain and food while if you
dont observe commandments you will have
no rain nor food.*1

Dt28-23 Punishment

Dt30-19 Witnesses
Dt31-28 Witnesses
Dt32-01 Witnesses
COMMENTS
*1 This is an example of METONOMY(having
words refer to RELATED ITEMS) So
here heaven and earth refer to the
punishment associated with heaven
and earth--the proof of this is
that this association is a recurring
theme in the Bible as shown above)

*2 These 4 verses refer to HEAVEN and
EARTH as WITNESSES---again we can link
this WITNESS idea to the REWARD and
PUNISHMENT idea*10

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 In Jewish law WITNESSES carried out
execution orders (See Dt17-07)
Hence we can see an additional pun here
- if the Jews sin then the WITNESSES,
HEAVEN and EARTH, will punish them.

But to properly understand the above
verses it is sufficient to simply
note the association of HEAVEN,EARTH
with REWARD and PUNISHMENT without
bringing in extra puns.
LIST210a
(C) Dr Hendel, Jan-03

We present a list of verses where
further details of the verse are presented
from other verses.

The classical example is the Passover Hagaddah
example: The verse Dt26-05d, ONLY A FEW JEWS
WENT DOWN TO EGYPT, is illumined by Gn46-27
which states that 70 PEOPLE WENT DOWN TO EGYPT.

Thus the technique of OTHER VERSES teaches
us that A FEW JEWS(Dt26-05d) means 70(Gn46-27)

Ex13-17c Jews afraid of war Nu14-42 Defeat of Jews
Ex17-10b Chur 1Ch2-18:19 Kalevs son
Ex35-30a Chur 1Ch2-18:19 Kalevs son
Ex24-14c Chur 1Ch2-18:19 Kalevs son
COMMENTS
*1 Lv21-18 says
- Blemished priests dont serve BECAUSE blemished
- priests dont serve

Mal01-08 amplifies this
- Would you give a blemished animal to your governor?
- Would he like it? Would he grant your favor?

*2 Rashis approach to the verse is literal--Bilam was
a prophet and he foresaw the defeat of Amalayk by
the Jews.

Therefore the next phrase in the verse--
---------------------------------------
His(Jewish) Kingdom will be higher than AGAG
and his (Jewish) reign will go higher
---------------------------------------
This next phrase (GO HIGHER) would refer to
the Kings after Shaul--to David and Solomon
who had greater Kingdoms and greater victories
than Shaul*10

*3 So the point of the verse is that not only
were the nation of individual Jews there but
that each Jew had his/her very own tribe.

Already the Patriarch Jacob laid down the
modern idea that Jews must be able to live
with people they are compatable with.

In fact the layout of tribes given by
Jacob (Gn49) and Moses (Nu02) are basically
the same (See http://www.rashiyomi.com/gn50-13a.htm)
Thus Rashi borrowed the idea of JEWS BY TRIBE
and applied it to Dt29-09

*4 Thus we see these other verses as indicating
that reference to gOD should be interpreted as
CONQUEST BY gOD. Hence the verse reads
---------------------------------
God by Himself gave the Jews rest
There were no other gods
---------------------------------
In other words the Jews did not lose battles
and achieved prosperity without political
alliances.*11

LONGER FOOTNOTES

*10 It is also possible to have a poetic approach to
these verses. Thus
- AGAG from GAG would refer to the ROOF nations,
that is, nations who think that they are self
sufficient (Their own ROOF) and dont need God.

The ROOF nations include AMALAYK under King AGAG
They would also include the MAGOG kingdom under
king GOG (See Ez38) which the Jews will defeat
in Messianic times.

The second phrase in the verse
---------------------------------------
His(Jewish) Kingdom will be higher than AGAG
and his (Jewish) reign will go higher
---------------------------------------
would therefore refer to King Messiah

*11
The use of words to refer to RELATED ITEMS is
a literary device call SYNECHDOCHE or METONOMY

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
A major method of Rashi is to comment on STYLE
Rashi is aided by the Rabbi Ishmael STYLE rules
The purpose of the Rabbi Ishmael STYLE rules
is to determine whether a text should be
interpreted literally or broadly

EXAMPLE
-------
Dt32-06 states a GENERAL THEME: Do you mistreat God?
Notice how this general theme is not further explained

The next phrases in Dt32-06 provide DETAILS & PARTICULARS
- You have forgotten the Good, God did for you
- You are ignoring the Good, God will do for you

In other words the subsequent phrases in the verse
amplify the original opening phrase and explain WHY
the Jews should not mistreat God

SUCCINCT SUMMARY
----------------
Very often Rashi is not commenting on Grammar or
words but rather commenting on overall structure
This in fact is the Rabbi Ishmael rule of CONTEXT

EXAMPLE
-------
We examining the overall structure
of Dt32-04:18. One can see the outline has 4 components
A- God is Just Dt32-04:06
B- God good to you so obey his laws Dt32-06
C- Confirmation that God is good from history Dt32-07:14
D- So why do Jews rebel Dt32-15:18

EXAMPLE
-------
By reviewing this overall structure we infer
the meaning of Dt32-13:14

There are 3 serious interpretations of Dt32-13:14
- The verses talk about conquest (Rashi,Oonkelos)
- The verses talk about sacrifices
- The verses talk about Torah/Learning

By reviewing the context of Dt32-04:18 we however
conclude that only the CONQUEST interpretation is
consistent with the overall paragraph. See LIST975e
below for further details.

This list is further developed in LIST975e which focuses
on Dt32-13:14. As can be seen from this list Dt32-13:14
occurs in a context of God sustaining the Jews who rebelled
against him. Hence the simple interpretation of Dt32-13:14
is one of Military conquest. See LIST975e below for further

3 Symbolic approaches to Dt32-13:14

We follow Rav Hirschs symbolic standard of requiring
ONE UNIFYING THEME that develops throughout the verse
(See Rav Hirsch on Gn40)

Three competing interpretations are presented
- a theme of CONQUEST (Oonkelos)
- a theme of SACRIFICES (Sifre)
- a theme of LEARNING (Sifre)

CRITERIA
--------
These 3 interpretations all fulfill the Hirschian
standard of UNIFYING THEME (That is one unifying
theme is stated and then developed over the 7 phrases)
Hence these 3 interpretations are LEGITIMATE HOMILY

However LIST106j shows the overall context of Dt32-04:18
This overall context is that the Jews rebelled against
God despite all He did for them militarily. Hence
this context shows that the true simple meaning of
Dt32-13:14 is the CONQUEST interpretation (hence
the Rashi on Dt32-13a that the Aramaic translation
is preferred).

CRITERIA
--------
SIMPLE meaning can refer EITHER to
- the meaning of a sentence by itself
- the meaning of a sentence IN THE CONTEXT OF ITS PARAGRAPH
The TRUE meaning of the text is the meaning of the
sentence in the context of its paragraph. The other
simple meanings must be rejected if they contradict
context (This follows the Rabbi Ishmael Context rule)

COMMENTS
*1 Play on word HEIGHTS. Israel and Temple were HIGH UP
Similarly the Torah is compared to something LOFTY

*2 Play on word FIELDS:
- WAR is fought on FIELDS.
- The FIRST FRUIT comes from the FIELDS

*3 FIELD-HONEY-OIL represent 3 levels of nutrition and
hence correspond to 3 levels of learning
- Bible-LawCodes-Responsa (Or Technically Bible-Mishnah-
Talmud)

WHEAT corresponds to DAILY laws since it is a DAILY food
WINE correspnds to STORIES since they are both INVIGORATING

*4 Play on word STONE/ROCK -- things found in the VILLAGES

*5 This item not interpreted in this theme

*6 We have several LITERAL associations
- OIL = OIL Libations
- WHEAT = WHEAT offerings (MINCHAH)
- WINE = WINE libations
- BLOODY RED = Kill enemy

*7 OXEN symbolize KINGS and leaders

*8 Sacrifices came from OXEN and LIVESTOCK

*9 Livestock breed other livestock. Similarly Talmudic methods
breed other laws
