SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- A variety of Biblical commandments use SYMBOLIC PUNS to remind either important situations or moral principles. However by gathering several examples together the force of the symbolic interpretation as something natural becomes more apparent. (For a full discussion of the rules governing symbolic interpretation visit http://www.Rashiyomi.com/gen-1.htm.) EXAMPLE 1 Nu21-09a ------------------ Moses made a SNAKE with COPPER color. The COPPER color symbolizes the SNAKE since in Hebrew SNAKE and COPPER come from the same root EXAMPLE 2 Gn06-14a ------------------ Noach made the ark from GOFER wood since in Hebrew GOFER and MOLTEN LAVA (GFRIT) have the same root The generation of the flood was punished with molten LAVA EXAMPLE 3 Ex20-23a ------------------ Steps (vs ramps) were prohibited in the temple because in Hebrew the word for FANTASIES comes from the same root as the word for steps (One should not FANTASIZE (use steps) in the Temple) EXAMPLE 4 Ex17-11a ------------------ Moses raised his hands during prayer to symbolize that the Jews should direct their thoughts upward in prayer EXAMPLE 5 Ex20-23b ------------------ The Bible prohibited embarassing stones with ones nakedness (How much more so one shouldnt embarass people) EXAMPLE 6 Lv20-15a ------------------ We execute animals who sleep with people to symbolize that adultery (with people) is a serious crime EXAMPLE 7 Dt12-02 ----------------- We are commanded to destroy idolatrous trees; how much more so should we destroy idolatrous people

*1 Rashi notes that ------------------------------ Moses was COMMANDED to make a SNAKE image Moses ACTUALLY MADE a COPPER SNAKE ------------------------------ Rashi suggests that Moses added the COPPER-ness for a PUN effect. In Hebrew COPPER and SNAKE come from the same root (cf the English Copperhead snake). Hence the COPPER image would remind people of the snakes. *2 See http://www.Rashiyomi.com/ex20-23a.htm for Biblical references to verses where the root Ayin-Lamed-Hey means fantasies. For example Ez11-05 or possibly P120-01 (Songs of fantasies (about the distant future)) *3 When you pray you direct your thoughts UPWARDS |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- One of Rashis 5 main goals is to explain grammar the same way modern Hebrew textbooks explain grammar One function of grammar is to identify SPECIAL WORDS such as WITH, OF, FROM etc. These connective words occur frequently and connect sentence fragments. Many of these connective words have multiple meanings EXAMPLE ------- ETH can mean FROM

We present several verses where ETH means FROM
VERSE | TEXT OF VERSE WITH eth TRANSLATED as FROM
Gn06-13c | I will destroy them FROM the land*10
Ex09-29a | When I leave FROM the city
Gn44-04 | As they left FROM The city
Gn41-08 | And no one FROM THEM explained the dream
Ex32-03b | They unloaded FROM the earings of their wives
Gn49-25b | From God: He helps: FROM Almighty: He blesses*10
|
||
*10 What a charming Rashi-Radack Controversy. Radack in his delightful book ROOTS clearly gives this as an example where ETH means FROM. Rashi in his commentary SEEMS to say the opposite ------------------------------------------------ You followed Gods laws and were WITH GOD...hence God blessed you ------------------------------------------------ Does Rashi then think ETH means WITH here? It appears so. But Radack has an OVERPOWERING argument. ALIGNMENT! --------------------------------------------- FROM the God of your Father: He helped you FROM the Almighty----------: He blessed you --------------------------------------------- Radack correctly argues that the two FROMS are parallel--hence we have to interpret ETH as meaning FROM. Rashi CAN NOT get out of this. Ah...but Rashi was not trying to. Rashi was commenting on the fact that one stanza speaks about the GOD OF YOUR FATHER while the other speaks about GOD (And leaves out the phrase OF YOUR FATHER) Hence Rashi-is-Simple: Joseph did NOT rely on his ancestral merit--rather Joseph relied on HIS God--his own observance (abstaining from his bosses wifes overture) earned him the blessing Similar observations apply to Gn06-13c. --------------------------------- I will destroy them FROM the land --------------------------------- Rashi suggests the alternative ------------------------------- I will destroy them WITH the land ------------------------------- (Because when the flood killed the people it also damaged the earth making it hard for agriculture) Since the second explanation interprets ETH as WITH it appears that Rashi preferred this explanation. I however do not presently know why (But hope to comment again when I find more examples) |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Everyone is familiar with the idea that Hebrew is based on triliteral ROOTS. These triliteral roots can be CONJUGATED in a variety of forms. Each distinct conjugation gives rise to a distinct meaning. Hence it can happen that two conjugations are spelled almost identically but mean totally different things. EXAMPLES -------- AwShAwn:AwShAn::Smoke(noun):To smoke(Verb) PaChaz:PawChaz::Fizz(Noun):To fiz(Verb) HawMam:Hawmawm::To smash::To smash them HithHalech:HithHalech::He walked:Walk(Command) BA-ah::ba-AH::He came::He is coming Yehgel:YeeGel::He exiled others:He was exiled YAYlech:YAYgel::He walked(active)::He exiled them(reflexive)

*1 In this example the identically spelled word can mean either - he walked (past tense) - walk (Command) Cf The Grammatical tables in the Ibn Shoshan dictionary Table 1 presents the conjugations in question. *2 The words are spelled with the same letters. The minute vowel difference determines whether it is causative(Helped) vs active (Good) *3 The two words have the - same spelling - same letters - differ in placement of accents Cf Gn29-06a vs Gn29-09,Gn46-26a vs Gn46-27 and Gn42-21b vs Gn34-27 |

SUCCINCT SUMMARY ---------------- Very often the meaning of a root can depend on the preposition following it. For example in English RUN-TO vs RUN-FROM have two different connotations. In this list we review the meanings of the Hebrew root Hey-Lamed-Caph in the interactive mode*1 which means to WALK*1 The meaning of WALK (HITHALECH) depends on the preposition - INTERACTIVELY WALK BEFORE means to WALK and HELP - INTERACTIVELY WALK WITH means WALK WITHOUT PROBLEMS - INTERACTIVELY WALK FROM means to FOLLOW

||||
*1 There are no other verses from which to infer what WALK FROM (literally HITHALECH ETH) means. Hence Rashi uses the Rabbi Ishmael rule of CONTEXT. - Noach FOLLOWED God but did not actively preach - Abraham preached to people(built altars) |
